Maybe the front desk in the dorm area to get an assigned dorm.
Wandering around lost and trying to find the school.
Wandering the campus.
And so on.

As for where to start....well, anywhere you please, really.
You can always ask what characters others have open.
For instance, I have a student at the stables. You're welcome to post there.
Though CBK is right, being assigned a dorm is always a good start.
