And er... Apparently sitting in my room, drying myself after having a shower and listening to music is cause for my friends to worry about me? Wtf?

They've text me, knocked on my door and cooked me food? All I did was have a shower!

So, having been disappointed by pretty much every Macross sequel (that includes you, Macross Plus), and watching each, sometimes not even all the way through, just to see nostalgic mecha again (Macross Zero, which I never completed, is only that CG goodness is the first episode to me), I am strangely and cautiously hopeful for Macross Frontier.

It seems to hit more nostalgia than a lot of the previous incarnations. We've got that scene of Britai (or Vlritwhai if you want to go by the wacky spelling on my 1/20000 scale ARII model o f his ship) and the others in the lead-in. We've got that classic Gerwalk shot at the end of the first episode. We have that take off shot in ep 4 which is right out of the original opening. We have plenty of nods to the Macross itself, like the shape of the school... and of course some background Zentran ships. We even have some songs - I was surprised and a bit delighted they went that far.

However, it doesn't go too far. It doesn't feel like a retelling and right now there's nothing I expect to have to happen just because it's a Macross show. Miss Glass may look like Misa but her role seems to be fairly different. Ranka is the fresh young face who works at the Chinese restaurant and needs savings, but they throw enough wrenches to show she's different. We've got the requisite bridge bunnies and Captain Global/Nemo as well.

Most of the characters, even if they don't scream certain Macross characters, I recognize for now as being types I've seen before but somehow they mostly feel fresh. Ranka manages to be more fun than annoying most of the time, though I'm a bit wary of her condition. We've seen Alto's type before too but he remains fun and the kabuki tie-in (is that geisha in the opening him?) seems somewhat interesting. The micronization disorder for Klan was a bit hard to swallow (it seems to affect her brain too...) but we'll see.

Sheryl seemed a bit inconsistent in the first episode (especially the second version), but seems to be easing into some sort of believable personality.

Sometimes the action is hard to follow. I appreciate them keeping the needless vanity shots out but adding the recognizable to fans shots in. There's no long Enterprise fly-bys, several minute Tek Jansen prepare to extend rear right landing struts sequences, or Gundam Evolve/Macross Zero-like transformation sequences. However, sometimes things are happening so fast it's hard to tell exactly what's going on. Like in episode 4, we were just following streaks of light for a bit. (Also, not enough firing a ton of missiles and watching their paths.) However, the episode did come through in the end with some neat maneuvers.

Finally, Ranka wins for appropriately timed meat buns.

Anyway, I fear that now that I have hope, it will eventually be crushed... but for now I can't convince myself to naysay, and just continue to watch with excitement.

I'm so getting sick and it's not even cool. When I'm getting a sore throat, or have one, I'm always a lot more warm than usual..it sucks. This happened today at work. emo
