Well it ought to be stated for the record that my i-pod is home to such things as Led Zeppelin, Rhianna, Nine Inch Nails, Lil Wayne, and Frank Sinatra to give you a bit of a cross section. I go through phases.
Give a few of these a whirl if you want to approach hip hop from a rock perspective:
- Almost anything by The Beastie Boys. Their producer Rick Rubin has worked with everyone from Jay Z to Slayer. Slayer actually provided the back beat to at least one Beastie Boys song.
- Jay-Z/Linkin Park: Collision Course
- 99 Problems by Jay-Z. Another Rick Rubin production.
- Hip Hop is Dead by Nas. Samples "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple to great effect.
- Everlast. He pretty much pioneered the whole White Boy Does Rap thing back in the day when he was with a little outfit called House of Pain.
- Buck 65. He's what would have happened if Tom Waits discovered hip hop.
- Handlebars by The Flobots. Solid political type song from a ska inspired hip hop group out of Denver.
- Saul Williams. Innovative hip hop artist, political activist, and arguably the best slam poet in the world. And yes, that's exactly who you think it is on that track. He's Saul's new producer.
- Low (Travis Barker Remix) by Flo Rida My biggest guilty pleasure of 2008. Made even better by the fact that it's not a drum loop and him actually on live instruments. He's done similar remixes of Rhianna's Umbrella and Souljah Boy's Crank That, among others.
- Jay Z mocks Liam Gallagher, covers AC-DC
- Snoop Dogg covers Metallica. For the lulz.

It's so weird to listen to 99 Problems without the remixed Beatles background... sweatdrop I actually think DJ Dangermouse's mix makes it a bit more powerful.
Also, oo. Buck 65 is kinda spiffy. surprised
