Maia took a bite of hers, grinning at him. "I don't mind walking around," she said. Neither hand was free, so she didn't reach for Toby's, but she did back up against the door and hold it open for him.
"Are you having fun?"

Fun? Well, he was enjoying himself at the very least. It was much better than sitting at home thinking or trolling the streets for pretty young things. He ate a spoonful of frozen yogurt and decided to nod. Yes, he might as well say he was having fun.

"I always have fun when--" when I'm with you. "When I'm around you or Dari," she amended the thought, flashing Toby a smile. "There's still so many things for me to learn. I never thought it could be fun." And spending time with the guy she liked, that was always a plus, right? She took a bite of her yogurt, peering into windows as they walked.

When? Toby's brows raised slightly. When what? When she was with him?
No, silly. When she was around her friends. Toby smiled either way and nodded. "I love this part. When people first get here and we get to show them around. New things are always the best." That was part of the reason he was fine with going in the toy store, even if it meant people were going to assume they had a child. "It can be hard, I think. It's a quarter-lifetime of learning in just a few months or so. You're doing good, though."

"It is hard," Maia agreed. "At first, I didn't know anything about anything, but it's been a lot easier than I thought it'd be. Especially with you helping me," she gave him another smile. "I don't know if other entities get to go out as much as I do or not, but I love it. I don't think I could ever go back to the way I used to live, not after seeing all this."

"I thought so," Toby said, eyes narrowing as his smile turned sly. He hadn't thought she was the type to thrive all on her own, especially not talking about all of the people on the beach. He had been right. Again. Good for him! "I'm glad, though. If you'd wanted to be alone again we could do that for you, but it's always nice to hear someone wants to join... 'natural' society." He accented the word with the pointer finger of his cup-hand and his spoon. Who decided what was 'normal' anyway? Humans did. So of course they decided that they were the norm. The majority, maybe. The norm? Not by far.
"So you're thinking of staying in Arizona a while? You know, Lori lives pretty close by."

Maia shook her head firmly. "No," She said, "You don't have to worry about that. I never want to be alone again." Natural society, huh? "It's exciting. Humans have all these things I never knew I wanted. Some of them are useful, and I'd never had a use for them before. Like a computer!"
She gave a nod. "Yup. I'm staying here a while." For good, if she could. "I want to travel, though. See exciting places."

"You can. It seems like a shackle sometimes, but having an ID makes travel a lot easier, and a bank account too. Just don't forget yourself. The world needs to keep what magic it has left."
He tossed his now-empty cup in a street trash bin and smiled to Maia. Was she ready to go inside the toy store?

Maia nodded. She didn't want the world to be sans magic; it would be a lot less beautiful. "I'll be careful," She promised, throwing her cup in the trash as Toby had. "Ready?" She asked. It was pretty exciting. She offered Toby her hand and peered into the toy store window.

Toby took her hand and recognized immediately that everyone was going to think they were a new couple being honeymoony and whimsical or a set couple with children. Oh well. He'd never really cared all too much for what random strangers thought. The doors slid open and they stepped inside, confronted with several different ways to go and aisles to examine.
"Where to first?"

Maia immediately headed for the aisle with stuffed animals. She kept a hold of Toby's hand; this wasn't like the grocery store, she'd never been here before. "I was wondering if they'd have a seal," she said. "And maybe we could find something to use at the lake."

"Seals are pretty popular. The white fluffy ones, anyway," Toby nodded, looking over the racks for any tuft of white. "It's almost pool time. There might be some stuff." A pause. "...we should buy water guns."

"Those are babies," Maia informed him. "And only a certain type. But of course they'd be popular." Babies seemed to be popular in most species; puppies, kittens, humans-- She grinned at him. "Lets get some! We can team up against Dari."

Toby nodded, giving an expression like 'of course those are babies, i knew that!' He didn't look to Maia thought until she offered her allegiance. "That's not really fair, is it? Not that I always play fair. Come on." They had to pass the Nerf guns to get to the water guns. The Nerf guns, Nerf crossbow, Nerf rifles, slime cannons...

"Dari and I team up against you at the lake anyway. We won, if you remember." She grinned at him. "I want to be on your team next." Besides, competing on the same side as Toby would be just as fun as competing against him. "Water guns first, then look for seals?"
