I was thinking of maybe doing a BT splinter faction, a grey/silver color scheme with a fourpointed star as a chapter symbol.

Most likely knock-offs of todays gods. But the "Before the Emperor was nothing!" stance might be better. I'd hate to see budhist marines crop up all of the sudden. Though chaplains handing out wholly communions to daemons would get you bonus pretzels most likely.
What we need is another marine chapter being killed off entirely, only then will the Emperor react. He did the same with the uhm, chapter (Fire Hawks?) is now the Legion of the Damned. The Emperor back then ordered a candle to be burned for the lost legion. To say that the Emperor just sits there and is nothing more then an empty husk is poo-poo. Read Drace and you'll learn that the Emperor is not only still pretty much sentient, but also a schyzo with multiple personalities.
