"Sure! Walk or drive?" Toby had given up on the machine before they even began. Maybe someone else would win the Indescribable Thing because they'd moved it over. He began out of the theater, taking in the warm Arizona sun with a smile and a bit of a squint.

The brightness of the Sun made Maia rub at her eyes. Ouch. "Walk?" she suggested, smiling at him. It was nice enough out to walk to the place. And it'd be nice to stretch their legs after sitting so long. "I liked the movie," She said, offering him her hand. "Lets go!"

He hesitated to take her hand this time, but he did take it. Her hand was warm, grounding, comforting... he needed it, just a little. Then they were off, over the grass barrier into the next shopping strip to avoid being hit by any cars.
"You did? I'm glad. I liked it too." Movies all sort of felt the same nowadays, though. It was just entertainment, who was he to complain? "Who was your favorite?"

"I don't really have a favorite," Maia admitted. The jokes had been funny, but some things had gone over her head. "Who was yours?" She looked to the shops in the shopping strip; the book store had been fun earlier, maybe they'd find something in this one. Something to distract Toby with.
"So froyo is frozen yogurt? Have you had it before?"

"I liked the guy with the glasses. I can't remember his name." Toby led the way down the strip. "If there's anywhere you want to stop and look inside just say so, and yes, I've had it before. It's slightly better for you than ice cream." But with all of the toppings available and the enormous cardboard bowls Maia was liable to cost him a pretty penny weight-wise, which was exactly what they wanted to happen.
When they reached the shop he held the door open for Maia out of habit. Against one wall, tables and booths and the display for all of the different size containers, all of which were larger than normal. To the right-hand side, a bay of frozen yogurt dispensers, two flavors and their mix in each, and then the bar of candies and cold toppings, the sauces, and the cashiers with their scales.

As predicted, Maia's attention almost immediately went for the candy bar. It was as if she'd detected the highest quantity of sugar in the place and pinpointed it. "Can we look around after, too?" she wondered if there was a toy store nearby. If there was, maybe they'd have a seal plush.
She went to look at the flavors, selecting cotton candy. She looked toward a the levers. Hm. Three. What did they do? She turned to look at Toby. "Hey, how do I do this?"

Toby turned up from his own, quarter-filled bowl.
"Hm? Oh." He came over. "This one is cotton candy, this one is birthday cake, and the one in the middle is a mix of the two." A horrible combination meant for kids undoubtedly, but to each their own. He was more a cookies-and-cream kind of guy.
"Or do you mean-- you just hold the cup under that nozzle there and pull the lever. It works best if you make slow circles to build it up. The cup, not the lever."

Maia made a face as Toby told her the flavor combination. Nope. Nope, that sounded awful. And much too sweet, even for her. "Just cotton candy," she said. What would be good on it? Sprinkles, maybe?
She followed Toby's directions, making hers a quarter full. The bowls were too big, and they'd just had popcorn and candy. "I don't think anyone could eat a full bowl," she said, with a shake of her head.

Toby's eyes went blank for a second.
He could.
Oh, could he.
... expression returned to the man's face and he smiled. "Yeah. Probably not." They were well over their snack-food limit for the day or he might be tempted to accepted the not-quite-spoken challenge. They moved on to toppings and Toby grabbed some mochi pieces, put some in an extra cup, and skipped right over the cold bar for the whipped cream.
"Look." He pointed to something on the cold bar. Bright yellow and red spheres, separated by colors. 'Popping boba'? Even if Maia could read it it wasn't bound to make much sense.

Maia was interested in the bubbles, coming to Toby's side to look at them. "Fish eggs," she said, making a face. Nope. She'd put sprinkles on her yogurt, but wasn't entirely sure anything else would go well on cotton candy. It was labeled strangely, though and she looked to Toby. "What are they really?"

Toby laughed.
"They're fruit-flavored. There's a chemical reaction-- I don't know, try one. Actually..." He ran back, got a little divider for his spare cup, mashed the mochi onto one side and added some boba. Hopefully they'd make it home. He popped one in his mouth as if to show Maia they they weren't half-bad.

Maia tried one hesitantly. She wasn't sure Toby wouldn't trick her; he'd tried with the eel at the sushi place. Hm. Not bad. She gave him a smile. "They still look like fish eggs," she said. "Ready to go?" she asked. "I want to look at the toy store."

"They do," Toby agreed with a little nod. "Hold up, we have to pay. Put it here." He put both of his cups on the scale and watched the charge climb but left space for Maia to add hers. "It's all by weight here."

Maia set her bowl on the scale. By weight? What? Huh. She supposed it cost more the bigger it was, just like it cost more the more you had in other places. "We could eat and look around first," she suggested, waiting for the scale to calculate the price.

The scale equaled out, the cashier repeated the displayed price, and Toby paid. He already had his spoon in his mouth by the time Maia was talking. He handed her one too.
"Mm." He took it out. "Yeah, people don't like 'food and drink' in their stores." Almost as an afterthought he popped a lid on Dari's share.
