[Dill] RaeRae Rave I hate it with a passion when people call me "Ash". I let my close family get away with it, but that's it.
But I prefer people to shorten RaeRae to Rae because I feel like RaeRae is a very Kin-specific thing.
Just like... ugh. Go through all sixth grade as "Ash Ketchum" and you'll understand. Hope. mad Apparently having a name that is also an action/feeling means that everyone gets to make every single pun imaginable based on your name. And then when people say your name is so pretty, I resist the urge to say "Don't kid yourself, it's the name of a soap opera character." Actually, my full name is just kind of... tacky... sweatdrop It's kind of a different name though.. I don't know. I don't see it as one that pops up every day but.. sweatdrop Yeah, I don't know.. I'm tired.

Skizzors Zelyhon Good attitude. While I do agree with Stream that the racial stats for elves don't particularly lend themselves to barbarians, it can be done with the right build. And hey, when in doubt, go with what makes you laugh. .. *cough* Yes. Right. xd I just seemed to have come up with the wrong build first time around.. and while I could undoubtedly fix it and then try it out, well. I'd rather do something a little more logical first go, and the first thing Stream suggested (fighter/rogue) seems pretty damn cool. Fits my idea of my character better than barbarian, too. Just have to look through my Handy-Dandy Handbook and figure out the details of how exactly to go about doing that. XD Fighter/Rogue is a good versatile build that Stream's already elaborated on. I was just commenting that when playing DnD (and just in general), it's good to not let other people's opinions absolutely tell you what to do. Originality and fun are always good. My best example of this is that last year, when planning a DnD game in our house, we had someone who was a complete rules monkey and always insisted he knew everything and the best ideas for builds. Now, I had issues with how he twinked his characters, but the point of this story is that when a few friends and I were planning out some characters, someone made a comment about being a half-elf. He then butts in, saying that half-elves aren't any good and that one should never play them, nor a ninja, which the guy was intending on being. Now, this wasn't uncommon, for him to assert that he knows the best things to make. So, the person whose character was being worked on decided to do something that made him laugh and annoyed the "expert" by ending up going with a half-elf Ninja who dual-classed into being a Paladin as well. XD

Stream: The first one sounds really close to what I'm going for. But, I looked over some rogue stuff in detail last night, and I'm not totally sure I need to bother having it as a class, much less focusing on it.. will remain unsurprised if I am completely and totally wrong, though. xd I'm thinking of a ranged archer dude, who's still fast and competent at avoiding things.. so maybe like ninja? with a crossbow? sweatdrop
I don't really want to be finding traps and disabling devices and whatever. emo

RaeRae Rave iBarty 3.14 RaeRae Rave AzurePaleSky But that doesn't come from your real name! Or if it does, I'm really confused. Ash is a cool nickname... I wouldn't mind that one, if my name was Ashley. Instead I get, "HEY YOU!" Pfft, Kin's nickname of "RaeRae" is very important to me. Hence the reason I've been taking it (and the shortened version of "Rae" for everyone else) as my official nickname for months.
... I hate the name Ashley... emo I hate when people I don't know very well call me 'Meg' or some other nickname. Especially Meg though. There are only a few people whom I let call me Meg without protest. I feel the same way about people calling me Dani. heart I hate it with a passion when people call me "Ash". I let my close family get away with it, but that's it.

Just like... ugh. Go through all sixth grade as "Ash Ketchum" and you'll understand. For me, nickname hell was from K-3. Someone in my class found out that my parents nicknamed me "Micki"...needless to say, every time I entered the classroom, some jerk would start singing the damn Mickey Mouse Club theme song. I hated that damn mouse until I was about 16 years old.

In vet school, I had a classmate named Rebecca. One day I overheard her complaining that she hated it when people called her Becky because it sounds so childish and she wished people wouldn't go shortening her name.
The thing was, she introduced herself to everyone as Becky. gonk It just made me glad I didn't talk to her much.
I guess I'm glad I have a name that doesn't lend itself to nicknames.

iBarty I'd like to know! heart What made you think of Japanese language actress? Can you speak the language well..? *doesn't know too much about you* sweatdrop i don't see myself performing for american audiences. i barely know the language but i'm going to dedicate myself a good 5-10 years of learning the language, then once i feel i have a good grip on the language (while working as an actor in college while i'm at it), i can start auditioning for parts.
it's going to be really hard, but i trust my abilites! /cheesy
fomite: heeey~ <3 and thanks. i need all the luck i can get. xD

Alternately, you could put a point or two in so if you really need to you'll be able to muck about with it... Or you could just scatter those points around so you've got a very basic understanding of dozens of different skills. Where I think you would like the rogue part of things would be the evasion and sneak attack abilities as well as the hide and move silently skills. If you're looking to be a ninja-type character you'd probably want to look more at the rogue class than fighters. The problem with fighters is that while they focus highly on combat abilities, they get next to no skill points, and almost every one of the "ninja" skills isn't a class skill for them. Crossbows are fine, but they're more of a "hit first, hit hard, and draw another weapon" thing, since they take a while to ready for another shot. They do hit a bit harder than a bow, but they get far fewer shots in. It all comes down to personal preference, but depending on how things go your part in a fight might come down to firing one bolt and reloading only to find that the combat has ended.

I'm just encouraging you to start simple until you understand things well enough to know what you're getting into. A ton of new players get turned off when they find out that their unusual characters aren't as awesome as they thought they were. The reason why I suggest slightly more basic stuff is because it is easier to add things to a character as you understand more than to take things away.

I mean, sure, I'd like to learn Japanese but if I went to learn it, my skills would be so trivial...just like a kid's speaking skills but worse. It's like that with German and I took that in high school. I want to try getting that one language program they've advertised on TV before...but I can't remember what it's called. I want to say it has something to do with obelisk, but I'm probably wrong. It's just something where you're not reading anything in the language, you're listening to it, or something. I don't know.

They do hit a bit harder than a bow, but they get far fewer shots in. It all comes down to personal preference, but depending on how things go your part in a fight might come down to firing one bolt and reloading only to find that the combat has ended. There's really no point (other than flavor possibly) to use a crossbow over a regular bow if you're an elf/class with martial weapon proficiencies. With the crossbow, you'll only get 1 shot per round, as Stream said, unless you burn another feat to get rapid reload which allows you to have your full attack bonus worth of extra shots. So... bow > crossbow for pretty much any class that can use it without penalties.
If you really want to do a ninja-esque thing, I recommend taking a few levels in rogue for sure, because the starting 32 skillpoints is hard to pass up and the fighter's 2+int skill points really aren't going to cut it for your sneaking et al skills. Plus... SNEAK ATTACK.
Like both Stream/Zely said, fun characters can be fun. I had a friend that played a halfling barbarian just for kicks once. He was hilarious, but sometimes it's rather depressing for new players to have their characters outclassed by someone playing [more] normal builds, so it helps to have some experience with the game before you deviate from the norm.
