"Hm. Well, I like Arizona so far," at least the people that lived there. Maia gave Toby a smile. "Its nice, and the lake we go to is beautiful!" And things were made better, when she was able to spend time with her boys.
The screen lit up with a warning to turn off cell phones. Maia took hers off and set it on silent, just in case Dari needed something.

Toby retrieved his phone and just turned it off as the previews began to play. It was odd to think that the actors, the famous faces that graced every screen, were entirely unfamiliar to Maia. It really was a tiny little world humanity lived in.

For the first time that day, Maia's attention wasn't on Toby. She stared at the screen, wide eyed. The special effects were beyond her, but She knew enough about television to know the difference between fantasy and reality: people weren't really getting hurt.

Toby grinned at Maia's awe.
"These are all previews for movies that'll come out in the future. If you want to see any, keep them in mind."

Maia pointed out the newest Disney movie immediately. "Lets go see that one," she said. While actors were pretty amazing, with their stunts and ability to speak knowing they would be seen all over the world, nothing beat moving drawings. She took a piece of popcorn and chewed it thoughtfully. "Which would you like to see?"

Ugh. Disney. To the innocent it was all fun and games. To people who looked too closely, it was full of bad lessons and sideways morals. Toby was one of the latter.
"I don't know. These are only a few." Generally related too. Comedies or lighthearted things. Then the company logos began to show and Toby smiled.
"Here we go. Only whispering, alright?"

Maia nodded, falling silent for the movie. She reached for popcorn a few times, but eventually ended up reaching for Toby's hand. She'd opened her mouth to ask a question, but thought better of it.
She'd ask him later.
Was this a date? Kind of?

Toby let her take his hand, almost acting as if it had never happened. He nearly brought it to his lips, but remembered himself and gave it a playful sort of raise and sway.
He couldn't. God, was he hurting her by doing this?

The movie was longer than Maia usually sat still, and by the end of it she'd fidgeted, examined her and Toby's hands, readjusted her legs to a more comfortable position, and finished her ice tea.
When the credits rolled, she was ready to go. "Lets go walk around some more," she invited him. They didn't need to go home just yet. She didn't want Toby to have to think about things that'd happened that day.

"Sure," Toby nodded. What to do first? They could hit the mini-arcade. The claw machine was undoubtedly rigged. Maybe they should skip it and just go straight for the strip mall. The pet store would probably be to depressing, even if it didn't have large animals.
He was well-distracted in mind and body. He tossed their trash in the bin and looked over the arcade. A shooting game, a fighting game, knock-off Pacman and a claw machine.

Rigged or not, the claw machine had captured Maia's attention. She dug in her purse and took out two quarters. She put them into the machine and looked to Toby. "How do I this?" She asked. Maybe she'd win something for him and cheer him up further.
"Pick one and I'll try to win it for you."

Toby opened his mouth to stop her but she had already put in the coins.
"These are usually rigged. They're too weak to pick anything up, so don't fee bad if it doesn't work. Go for the freest thing. The, uh... the..." What in the everliving hell was that? "That one." He moved to the side of the machine to help Maia align herself.
"A little more toward the back." The timer was counting down.

"So they get more money," Maia understood; but it hardly seemed honest. Of course, if everyone won, the company making these would probably close up shop. She stared at the plush Toby pointed out. "You want that one?" she asked, surprised. She aimed for it, moving towards the back as Toby suggested.

"It's the only one with which we have a chance." Said dramatically with a clenched fist. "Okay. Right there."
He'd be amazed if they won it. Those cheap, ugly things were always more attractive once you got them out of the machine.

For a moment, it looked like they had won. The claw had latched onto the thing and lifted it up and away from the other stuffed animals. It moved to the left and opened up, dropping it in undoubtedly a more difficult position.
The selkie svowled at the machine briefly, before turning to face Toby. She smiled at him. "I see what you mean. You mentioned froyo earlier, want some?"
