Cross had avoided running into anyone since returning to the Order. The only thing on his mind was Sil. He wanted to see her, to know for himself that she was okay. He doubted she would be in her room, but it was the first place for him to look. He had left the communicator Claire had rigged, in case she needed to contact him. With a heavy sigh and an anxious heart, he stopped in front of Sil's door, his boots giving a familiar clumping sound as he did. Rapping his knuckles on the wood, he waited for a response, hoping he would get the door opening to him.

((Why hello there ;o ))
Sil had turned in for an early night, getting ready for bed with a little bit of light reading at the desk in her room. It didn't take long for her attention to be diverted to the beautiful indigo music box on the edge of her desk, and the ornate box next to it that she knew held her past engagement ring. Her mind was a hundred places at once, and none of them were the book in front of her.
The knock on her door brought her out of her silent reverie, and she reached her fingers behind the lenses of her glasses before heading over to the door. She wasn't immodest, but as soon as she opened the door it was clear she was ready for sleep; a long sleeve, loose button up shirt draped along her shoulders and a pair of shorts covered her legs beneath them. The long strands of her brown hair weren't in their usual swirl and were pinned back into a ponytail away from her face.
As the door swung open, her eyes widened and her heart jumped. It was an odd mixture of fear and joy; fear from memories becoming more distance and joy out of relief that he was standing there in front of her. "Cross!" she cried, and without thinking she jumped up to give him a tight hug around the shoulders. Relief flowed freely from her, as she couldn't truly believe he was okay until she saw him with her own two eyes. "You're back... and in one piece!"

(( You act like you didn't know I was coming. LOL. ))
Cross nodded in response to her surprise, "I'm okay. It's okay."
He felt any anxiety he had been holding in flow from him completely. Feeling her throw her arms around his shoulders melted him, and her soft voice sent a familiar tingling throughout his chest. His own relief filled him, and he couldn't keep himself from wrapping his arms tight around her, holding her to him for probably a longer moment than he should have. Feeling her live, breathing body in his arms was the greatest thing to him. He could feel her warmth even through his thick General's coat, and he gave her a squeeze before finally releasing her. His relief showed in his eyes as he looked at her face.
"I know that you said you were fine, but...hearing it isn't the same as seeing it for myself," he admitted.

(( FINE NO MORE HI'S FOR YOU :c *takes it back.*))
Her arms squeezed around his neck, the way it felt to hug him still as familiar as it had been the last time they had embraced several months ago. As he released her she fell back with flushed embarrassment, heat rising along her neck to her ears. Part of her wondered if that was an inappropriate response, but she honestly couldn't fault herself. The last time she had seen him was during her abduction with that horrific, sinking feeling that she had failed her General and gotten him horribly maimed, even killed.
Sil wrung her hands slightly, clearly a little nervous now that the embrace had ended. "I'm fine... All healed up now, just a few new scars here and there. Nothing I can't handle." She stepped back, leaving the door of her room open as an offer for him to come inside if he wished. "Is Claire with you? I hoped to see her too... know she's safe... but..." her voice trailed off, "Silly question, I guess..."

Cross took the invitation and stepped inside, immediately digging in his pocket for his cigarette case. He hadn't step foot in her room since...he couldn't even remember the last time, but it was most likely for an evening in with her, if you will. He took a moment to look around, noticing the precious belongings she had been staring at moments before. His eyes, too, rested on the delicate case that held the ring meant for her, but he quickly averted his gaze, focusing on getting a cigarette between his lips as soon as possible. With a light snap, he closed the case and stowed it away again, deftly lighting the cigarette he had taken from it.
"She isn't, I had to leave her behind. It isn't safe for her to be here with me...Did we ever move Ano into your room? We didn't, did we," he commented absent-mindedly before taking a long drag, savoring the tobacco that melted away anything he wanted it to.

As Sil closed the door behind him, she followed his eyes and had the distinct impulse to rush over and shove the trinket into the nearest drawer, realizing how tactless of her it was to leave it out like that. For a long moment she wondered what he thought, but she kept her face passive like she hadn't noticed it was there to begin with, and cleared her throat gently.
"No, but he's been in here on his own, since he hasn't been able to be in your room for some time now," she smiled a little bit, even though she felt the segway was to make sure that no more information was asked about Claire. She had proven herself unable to protect her mind from intruders now, and despite that her own lips hadn't passed the information part of her felt untrustworthy now. "And has made a sport of leaving dead mice in front of my door, which... I have to say I'm not too thrilled about."
With delicate, barefoot steps, she moved over and sat down on the edge of her bed and settled down. Her toes curled a little against the floor, chin dipping downward as she avoided looking at the cigarette to curb temptation. It didn't work. "Just to let you know, the incantation you suggested for Eira worked. She's in a new body now... and able to come inside," she informed, finally lifting her gaze to him. "I may still be in a bit of trouble thanks to that experiment, but... hopefully it'll work out before you're down to one apprentice again."

"I see. I'm sure you've enjoyed his company, though. And you know he only brings you mice because he loves you, " he chuckled.
He moved across the room to a chair, sitting down with a somewhat tired sigh. He hadn't had any time to look into research for Sil's little issue with Eira. In fact, he hadn't even thought of it once since the day he examined her. He leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees, rubbing his eyes with his fingers. He remembered what he had sensed that day, and his hand traveled to rub his chin, scratching at his goatee a little.
"I want you to be careful with her. I haven't had the time to even look into anything yet, but...promise me that you'll be careful," he watched her as he took another puff from his cigarette, "And don't talk like that, decchi. Nothing is going to happen to you."

"Yeah well, he could show he loves me by not dismembering small animals on my doorstep," she countered with a small laugh of her own, finding that she enjoyed hearing his laugh after it had been missing from her life so long.
As he spoke of Eira, she chewed her bottom lip nervously, wondering what he was driving at. Sometimes Cross wouldn't be direct about certain things and she always heeded his warnings, but she couldn't see any reason Eira would be a problem to her. However, since he hadn't looked into the situation she wasn't going to push for more information on the subject. Not now anyway. "I'm trying to be very careful... She has specific orders and she's sticking to them so far... and she's a very nice girl from what I can see," sometimes too nice... "I hope she'll work out as a guardian, for her sake and mine."
At the slightly scolding words, she waved her hand a little. "I'm just kidding. It's not like I haven't scraped out of some crazier situations than this one. I'm starting to think I have nine lives, or something. Much like you," her eyebrow lifted lightly. "You never did tell me how you got yourself into such a mess right after Christmas..."

"I've taught you well then, haven't I?" his familiar smirk played up the corner of his lips.
He looked thoughtful for a moment before standing up again. He was restless, and had been for some time. He probably would continue to be as well, stretching his back before pacing a couple of steps. His eyes rested past the glass panes of the single, large window in her room. Moving over, he leaned against one side of the frame with his back to her, looking down at the still snow-covered grounds.
"It was one of the Noah....Sheryl, of Desires. You can imagine what he wanted with me of course. And his power...he can manipulate a person's body any way he chooses. My leg was broken in the blink of an eye. I was surprised to see him, to be honest. Much like I wasn't expecting Lulubell, seeing as the Earl had the Noah of Bonds on my tail for the longest time. I suppose he wanted to step up his game further in an attempt to finally capture me. I manged to get away obviously, as I always do. But...I will admit that it's getting tougher these days," he quietly explained.
Suddenly, he remembered part of their conversation via Tannie, "Didn't you say there was a fire?" he turned around rather quickly to look at her, his expression clearly showing his desire for the full story.

The words these days left a sour taste in her mouth, and she wondered if Cross's lifestyle was starting to catch up with him finally. It had amazed her for some time now that a man who regularly partook in the poisons of temptation in alcohol and cigarettes still looked so well. Was it Cross slowing down or the Earl becoming more aggressive? The question hung in the air silently between them, unasked.
"I see," she sighed, her chin falling into the cup of her palm. Goosebumps rose along her tanned skin as she imagined the work of this particular Noah in action. It seemed most of the Noah had some sort of power that caused horrible afflictions on them; it was no wonder they didn't seem to be winning this war. It was amazing that so many of them had managed to survive the Noah attacks with powers that the other side boasted. "If the Earl were smart he would stop wasting resources to chase after you."
Mention of the fire made her frown deeper. "As I said... I didn't see it myself, but from what we ascertained some files were taken from one of the research storage rooms." In her mind she was seeing the sight of the charred room, remembering the mess that had been in there. It had been left wholly untouched for some time for investigation purposes, but so far not much had been yeilded. "Whoever took them took care to set the rest of the files ablaze and reduced most of them to ash. I thought, with Lavi's keen eye, that we might have been able to figure out where files were missing from to find out what had been taken, but the state of the files made it impossible to do inventory. We don't know if it was an inside or outside job, though..."
She had her suspicions, but who didn't? It seemed awful coincidental that their defenses had been nearly destroyed by the Noah and this event followed after.
((Bullshitttinnnng based on what Liv told me. Hopefully Lavi doesn't mind. I don't know if we were intending to go over that part.))

"Mm...," was his only response or a long time as he thought about what she told him.
It seemed to him, regardless of it being an inside or outside job, it had some connection to the Noah. It was a shame that there was no way of knowing what research had been stolen, but he knew only so many things would be of interest to the Earl. He remained silent all the way through his cigarette, finally putting the butt out and tossing it into a nearby trash can after taking the last drag from it, "I'll have to take a look around." He paused for another short time as he stared at the ground.
"If I remember right...there was also something you wished to tell me. Before you got captured...," he trailed off, folding his arms over his chest as he lifted his head to look at her.
(( LOL. Of course. ))

Sil had decided to stand up then, her nerves on edge as she considered the possibilities. Her fingers gently stroked the spines of the books littering her bookshelf. As if she were suddenly interested in a particular topic, she picked one up and flipped the pages with a crisp roll of her thumb to fill the silence of his thoughts.
As he asked the question, a sharp jolt of nervousness gripped her muscles. Her fingers slackened and she dropped the book clumsily, quickly moving to pick it back up and stuff it back. Her mouth went dry and her throat tightened, wondering if she could even find the words now.
"That..." she trailed off, her voice taking a distinctly softer note. At first her eyes stayed on the floor near his feet, he muscles in her jaw tensing as her teeth gritted. "I... Well... I mean it's... it's nothing related to this." As the words left her mouth, she knew that she was stalling but she couldn't seem to stop herself. She had several weeks to build up to this moment, and the longer the bandage had remained on the wound the more nervous she became about ripping it free. How would he react? What would he do? Cross was as unpredictable as the weather and twice as unforgiving, and she wondered perhaps most heavily if his opinion of her could go any lower.
"... I... ah..." Was there a good way to phrase this? Her palms started to sweat and she swallowed hard. "Lavi and I... we... decided to try... being together," she finally said, her eyes lifting to gauge his reaction after her words. Though she had tried to break it to him as gently as she could, she knew that no matter how the words were said they were not the ones he would want to hear. The edges of her lips curled downward in a noticeable frown heavy with worry. "I thought it would be better if you... heard it from me... though I suppose there's not really anyone else to to tell you..."

Cross watched her closely as she fumbled with the book and with her own words. He knew whatever was coming was something she had been dreading telling him. Though he had been somewhat expecting it, that didn't lessen the stab to his heart any. He showed nothing in his features; Not surprise, no anger or resentment. After she had remained quiet for a few seconds, he turned his sights away and down, leaning his back against the window with his arms still folded across himself. He stood there for what probably seemed an eternity, his eyes closing as he took a deep but quiet breath in and out his nose.
The way she had phrased it had come across soft, which he knew was her intention. The whole, 'we just wanted to try,' didn't fool him for a second, though. He had known when he wrote Lavi the letter what could come of it. He knew that Sil wasn't just giving Lavi a chance, but that she was giving herself a chance, too; A chance to move forward with her life, to get past...to get past him. He couldn't blame her for it, he couldn't be angry with her. On some levels he even felt like maybe this was how it should have been from the start.
If he hadn't pursued her so adamantly, despite knowing her feelings for Lavi, then maybe they would never have been together to begin with. In fact, they wouldn't have been together, at any point. When he made it his goal to make her fall for him, he hadn't really expected her to be the woman he wanted to spend his life with. He had never thought he would find that in any woman. He merely stumbled upon her through his own selfish desires, as usual. He felt to some extent that he had never deserved her, being that his original intentions were not backed by a true interest in her for anything deeper than his usual trivial flings. He wondered now if this was some kind of karmic payback for all the hearts he had broken in the past.
Finally, he opened his eyes and looked into hers, so he could properly judge her answer to the quiet question he posed, "Does he make you truly happy?"
