November 30 – First international football match to be recognised (retrospectively) by FIFA as "official" takes place at Hamilton Crescent, Scotland; the result is Scotland 0, England 0.[2] Earlier international soccer matches had already taken place in 1870, in 1871 and again in 1872 at the Oval, London.

September 4 – Thomas Edison flips the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant in history, lighting one square mile of lower Manhattan. This is considered by many as the day that began the electrical age. December – Zichron Yaakov is founded in northern Israel. The Married Women's Property Act 1882 in Britain enables women to buy, own and sell property and to keep their own earnings.
