That has been going on for years now. It was just recently brought into the spotlights attention, because people learned about twilight, and began to talk about their blood fetishes, with other people, learning that they weren't...as MUCH as a freak as they thought they were.

Granted... it's still creepy and weird. But a fetish with being bitten or biting... is more common than you think. I myself know at least five people that get off being bitten and/or drawing blood.
If someone came out with a book that made burning people's skins off sexy, you would get more people talking about how they are pyromaniacs. Since it isn't sociably acceptable now, people keep to themselves. When something becomes "all the rage" that's when things, like biting and sucking on someone's neck, comes into the spotlight and more people become aware of it. Until then, it remains in the shadows.
It has absolutely nothing to do with Twilight.
