Sure enough, as the two of them traveled deeper, the foreset got much more dense. It wasn't incredibly noticeable at first for Tenkai, probably because it was so gradual that Tenkai got used to it quickly as they went along. But soon enough memory kicked in, and the monk could tell that it was a lot darker than it was half an hour ago.

Just then...a noise?

An odd noise. A sharp, rustling-type noise. It wasn't too far away, but he could tell it was some sort of movement of leaves. It could have been the wind, but it felt too sharp and unlike the gentle blowing of leaves that was felt when they first entered the forest. One would also think that the thickness of these areas of the forest would provide more wind cover. Still, it could have been easily overlooked...had it not been for that smell. It was a burning smell, the kind of smoky aroma that comes from meat that's just about ready to be taken off the spits. Tenkai hadn't eaten more than a bowl of rice for breakfast this morning, so he picked up on the scent of food fairly well. Had he been just a bit closer he'd be able to tell what kind of meat it was, unless it was some sort of animal he'd never eaten.

But Tenkai was not a dog. His senses were sharp, but probably not that sharp. Though, based on the direction of the wind, odds were likely the scent came from the same direction the wind blew from. Fortunately, it just so happened that they were heading right towards it. Good. Downwind was good. More importantly, Tenkai could make out from the cover of the trees that there was a stream just ahead going along the path.

Shaking leaves, the smell of cooked meat, and a water source. A camp, maybe?

Either way, if there was any hostile presence Chen probably would pick up on it by now. Tenkai's range of insight was definately not like Chen's psychic abilities, but if there was a strong enough killing intent in the area Tenkai would probably be feeling it too. It seemed safe for now, but who knows? Killing intent wasn't too difficult to hide with the right mental practices.

"Take it a bit more slowly, Chen," whispered Tenkai from the forest, hoping Chen could pick up on his voice with his senses. "There's something up ahead."

Chen was a mix between bored and anxious. Walking for half an hour wasn't pleasant, and he didn't like how the change in the forest went from the happy-go-lucky atmosphere of the exterior to the more gloomy dark-dark-everywhere scene that they were approaching. It seemed the name was becoming more meaningful the more steps they took into the forest. This made him more alert, destroying his boredom and making him wonder what he was going to come to next. He was hoping that some animal would jump itself out of some bush, but he couldn't be surprised that easily with his little radar currently active.

He came to a stop when he finally took notice of the picture before him, a stream, the path before him that housed some noises that were far from natural, and the smell of something potent in aroma, like burning meat or some other substance. Food was the first thought, but you never knew what people decided to throw on the fire. This was a man who had once seen a person get burned alive trying to run themselves through a burning building. It seemed even Tenkai was aware of this, as his whispered words barely made it to Chen's ears.

"I know," was his only response. There were two different approaches they he could take to this. He could rush over and leap through, shouting that he was present to one and all, or he could instead take Tenkai's way of things and use some form of stealth. After all, you couldn't move through a district ran by criminals without some stealth. Seeing as he had no idea what lied in wait, he decided he'll be smarter, taking his walk toward the stream. He crouched down next to it, having his finger give a flick against its surface, watching some ripples be made through the flowing stream. Tenkai probably was wondering what Chen was trying to do, but it would become apparent when he suddenly planted his right shoe onto the surface...and didn't fall in.

Both feet walking onto the water, those of the Christian faith would be astounded to see someone plant themselves upon the water as if Chen was Jesus himself. However, he was nowhere near the grand stature of such a man, and instead was doing this in the form of using those psychic powers of his again. His body going into full equilibrium, he was capable of creating a balance of buoyancy and his weight to make this feat possible. Probably the only people you would see doing a trick like this would be the fabled ninjas of the eastern world. Maybe Chen knew ninjitsu for all Tenkai was concerned.

Nevertheless, crouching, Chen began his walk along the stream, keeping close to the trees that were likely near it for cover, looking around when he can to make sure he didn't run into anything that wasn't friendly, or at least knew he was there. As long as he didn't move too fast, he was not in danger of breaking his equilibrium and falling into the water.

Thus you can walk on water, quicksand, or even a spider's web without sinking or breaking through, though the stickiness of the webs still apply. If you run faster than a jog, however, you will sink or break through the surfaces that apply. Falling in this state only halves the damage you take.

As the men followed the stream's curve, one from shadow and one ignoring the occasional stones and actually walking on the surface of the water. Their thoughts would soon be confirmed as their journey led them around a few more trees. The foliage began to suddenly thin and become tame, wild growth culled and cleared relatively recently (perhaps a week, as opposed to the wild ferns and such all about). And just steps more off the side path, they would break into a clearing.

It was perhaps 30 yards in its longest dimension across the river, half that in width. Clearly visible were a great amount of tracks, footprints, tread lines, disturbed earth, and what actually drew them there-- a large smoldering campfire surrounded by stones, with a carcass left on a suspended stick. There were other smoldering areas, though those were only as large as one's fist and not only covered with dirt, but water. That central fire was the only one left to burn away, the owners perhaps comfortable in the make of the pit. Only hours had separated the two parties.

The other side of the clearing had a very visible, well-worn path. It would seem to be a main one, and the one taken by whoever had camped.

Eternal Dirge
" So when did it stop being your plan? When did Nicolai take over?" Damion shot at the large man once he'd retreated a safe distance, scooting to the left in his shufflings.

The issue with a weapon as large as Nikolai's was simply that it had a large berth to cover. It could not simply be stopped on a dime. The axe had missed Damion, but sliced the majority of the tables and chairs in the room, between both men, neatly in half. Now it was swinging out wide to Damion's side and moved to devastate the bar. Ivan spoke through the motion, his voice strained but coherent.

It did not...

And with a clamor the bar was struck sending bottles of booze and glass flying in all direction along with a shower of wooden splinters.

Nikolai vas alvayz chozen. De vorld vill change. But vhat good is et to me...

Ivan's other arm joined his first, the axe never stopped. Infact it moved faster, smoother, borrowing off of its previous momentum to come back towards him and around again as he stomped forward and slashed wide a second time at about the elemental's waist hieght, giving Damion a few feet to cover and less time to do so.

...if everyone I know dies?

The elemental dove forward as the axe made a pass for his hip, at a loss for words. Chosen? The bloody hell was that s**t?! He'd come up low infront of Ivan, standing up fast with his hands on his hips. " How bloody stupid do you have to be?" He asked, fanged mouth moving so fast his teeth clicked loudly, punctuating his words.

" Chosen? Did you actually call him that? What is he your ******** messia?" He snarled, leaning up to try and become face level with Ivan. He was well aware that at any moment he could be nailed with that giant axe, or a knee, or any number of things. But by all the gods he wanted to get things straight!

" Look, I get what you want to do, and I sympathize, but come on! You can't be blind to the fact that this is mass genocide!"

Damion stopped.

Because of that Ivan stopped. The axe came around, and over the elemental's head before smashing into the ground nearby. The Bartender had said he did not wish for this, it would have been a lie if he simply continued then.

No.

Ivan said.

Ysmidon choose Nikolai. Only Nikolai enters the crypt. Only he can pass zhe seals. But iz locked. Magic cannot pass. Now, in magic box it can...

See? I can beat it with this sledgehammer all day long and the hammer will chip first. But put it in its owners hands and boom! Its suddenly opens completely. Odd request. I've never had anyone specify enchantments for the parcel packaging.

You brought him the key to open grave now and free zhe Worm King.

The large man shook his head, letting his huge axe go. At this range, even if Damion attacked his smaller armada of axes would be of better use, but he did not reach for them.

I see vhat zhis iz.

He said, shaking his head side to side solemnly.

Vhen Ysmidon rises, he vill call hiz flesh back. Me, you. Ve die.

He unhooked an axe, but held it loosely in his hand as if weighing it.

I vould rather being dying fighting for something, beside vhat is left of my friends end family. Zhen die fighting for nothing.

Tenkai wasn't very much shocked at the fact that Chen walked on water, since that was something Tenkai knew was possible. Sometimes people used some form of magic as to not disturb the equilibrium of the water's surface. Other methods Tenkai was more aware of was simply weight control to boost oneself off impact with the water, but that had to be done by running. Chen's ability seemed the opposite, using his abilities to even out his balance totally rather than using initial impact to push off.

Still, even with Chen staying low, it wouldn't be too hard for him to be spotted from that position. If it were Tenkai he'd rather submerse himself in the water, but that wasn't good for either of them. If Tenkai got his robes soaked they'd be heavier and make movement much more awkward, and Chen probably had some electronics on him that most likely didn't like water.

At the very least Chen would be less visible than he was before, which served Tenkai's purposes well. Tenkai remained in the treetops as they proceeded towards the scent before chancing upon...

An empty camp?

"Close enough, I guess," thought the monk.

Tenkai was expecting to run into people, but it seemed the camp had been temporarily abandoned. Temporarily because of the food left on the fire. Either that or whoever left this was due for a meeting with Smokey the Bear.

Tenkai stood on the branch of a tree and thought a moment of the possible scenarios. He was going to assume this wasn't just some case of carelessness, so whoever left the fire here was probably intending to come back by the time their food was done cooking. Either that, or whoever resided here was driven away by something. But if so, what could drive them away? And there was always the possibility that if the party was away, something could be keeping them from returning...

Nevertheless, this merited further investigation. There were other smoldering piles about the size of a fist around the area, but they had obviously been put out. What could they have been? Too small to be an old campfire. Other than that, there were quite a bit of tracks down there that needed closer inspection.

"Inspector!" whisper-shouted the monk.

Once he got Chen's attention, he'd continue.

"The camp's filled with tracks," said Tenkai, "If you're going to be the one they can see, you should check them out!"

This way, Tenkai could remain hidden and stay alert for any disturbances or possible ambushes. Chen was probably more suited to inspecting the tracks, even if having the Inspector "inspect" was a bit redundant.

The two of them would be able to make sense of Chen's findings once that was through. But then there were other things to consider. Looking towards the path leading out of he clearing, Tenkai wondered if his initial thoughts were sound. If someone had set up camp and intended to return, where were all of the supplies? If supplies were what they were investigating, wouldn't they have a lot more than just a fire? Either the party was very lightly equipped or they were on the move, and the two of them were losing valuable time.

Nevertheless, analyzing tracks was an important part of tracking if you wanted to get an idea of who you were following. Chen's psychic abilities would probably make that all the more vivid. In the meantime, Tenkai would keep his senses sharp just in case this was some sort of unseen trap.

Chen took immediate notice of the clearing that came about. He saw what appeared to be the dark, scarred marks of a campfire, and then a lone one left to burn with what looked to be a carcass of some animal left that seemed to have been already stricken of a lot of its meat. The detective walked himself off the stream and moved over toward the campfire, being as bold as one could be. His eyes looked upon the ground as he saw the various marks that the people left, from footprints to what was obviously the markings of a vehicle of some sorts. Crouching down low to get a closer look at the tracks, Chen moved his finger over them to get a feel of how deep they went, for that would give him a prediction of how heavy they were.

"Hmm." He looked up at the pit as he stood, watching the flames that were left to burn slowly diminishing. With a little more look around at the remaining pits of fire, he made his conclusion.

"You can stop whispering, Tenkai," Chen said out a bit louder than a whisper. "Whoever was here, they're long gone."

Then he said more to himself: "Damn, I wish I brought my car out here instead of leaving it back at the lodge. I didn't know it would be this long of a trip."

Chen folded his arms, pondering if he should just turn around and go back to get his car or continue. Usually, when people brought vehicles into a woodland, it was for convenience of transportation and cargo transportation. He could make a good assumption that this landscape was probably a few miles long. Even with their pace, it would take another hour or so to even go more distance, while whatever was ahead of them was already far ahead, with faster transport to boot.

Chen reached into the inside pocket of his leather coat, pulling out what looked like a handheld palm pilot colored in silver plating. With a few buttons to push, a holographic screen suddenly appeared, having Chen go through various little windows until he finally spoke: "Hello, this is Agent Chen Ning, ID 140566."

After a pause, a voice spoke back to him from the device: "Identification and voice recognition confirmed. Welcome, Chen Ning. What can we do for you today?"

"Can you get a lock on the signal of this device, and use it as an origin to display to me a full map of this terrain? I want to know the full diameter of this forest. And if you can, can you search up to a mile north of my position? If you see anything out of the ordinary, such as vehicles or building structures, give me a satellite snapshot of that area."

"Okay, sir. I'll have the request fulfilled for you in five minutes."

"Thanks."

Chen just stood there as he awaited the analysis.

((I'll let you give this, Ecks, if it's applicable.))

The ruts, linear and relatively thin, pushed hard into the ground, nearly an inch in the firm soil. As Chen was closely looking at the tracks, he could see the exact orientation of them. On the edges of the path were footprints, much more shallow but numerous and belonging to some big-and-bare-footed (or at least most of them were, though a set of flat bootprints was seen amongst them) beings. The path itself had the aforementioned ruts and hoofprints, numerous, and nearly as deep as the linear ruts.

(Since the GM is only 80% sure that "ruts" is the proper term, it will be clearly stated here that these "ruts" are the result of a wagon wheel. It'd be easy to identify, since the only other explanation could be a Ski-Doo.)

Chen's response would be that in the one-mile area that he requested searched, there was nothing that he was looking for. There was a path, however, told by the fact that the trees split for an ever-widening, well-trodden road. While there were a couple of other side paths that branched up into the main (just as the path they took into the forest linked up), there were no signs of people on them, and no equipment or fortification.

His senses still alert, Tenkai bounded through the trees bordering the campsite all the way over to the other path leading out into he forest. He dropped from the tree branch, landing in a kneel to absorb the impact of the drop. Staying within the cover of the trees, Tenkai took a closer look at the tracks on the ground so that he could get his own idea of the situation.

"These are pretty big footprints," said Tenkai, without whispering as per Chen's suggestion, "Though the people that left them were probably not that heavy..."

Tenkai's eyes trailed to the ruts and hoofprints.

"...Or at least as heavy as a horse."

Bare footprints, hoofprints, and linear tracks. Bare feet suggested some sort of tribal culture or woodland people, as few adults with feet of this size would just casually walk around in the woods where you could step on Lord-and-Buddha-knows-what. But the hoofprints and linear tracks was definately the sign of some sort of horse or beast-of-burden-drawn wagon.

Yoshi! What a perfect lead! The wagon was most likely connected to the supplies they were tracking. Perhaps it was some sort of peasant group? That could be a plausible explanation for he bare...

"Oho...what's this we have here?"

Tenkai spotted the single pair of bootprints standing out amongst the bare footprints.

"Well now," said Tenkai, "This changes everything." It was strange, he thought, that a group of barefoot beings would have one amongst them wearing footgear. There were other possibilities, of that Tenkai was certain, but two scenarios struck him poignantly.

"Either a lone wagon-rider was captured by local natives," he said aloud to Chen, "Or we're dealing with a slave-holder."

The latter seemed to make sense to Tenkai more, since it was easier to kill or tie up a man to loot him of his supplies. The person with the boots would probably be aided by the barefoot men, which would either mean they were slaves or some group of servants employed by the wagon-keeper. With a horse to move the carriage, it wouldn't be too far to guess that the men themselves were being used as merchandise if this truly was a case of slavery.

But jumping to conclusions wasn't a good thing, either. These were only a few possible scenarios. Nevertheless, it was a start.

"We should follow the path," said the monk before leaping back up into the treetops, bounding against the sides of two trunks before reaching a sturdy branch.

" Really? It....it was that easy?" Damion said, his tone incredulous. He'd expected more of a struggle really, perhaps more words or atleast abit more convincing. He was glad for sure, but he had definately not expected this. " So...uh....lead the way...I guess?" He asked, moving from infront of Ivan and motioning towards the door. Not like he knew where to go.

He'd know what to do once they got there.

"Or," he added to Tenkai's guessing. "Maybe there is someone human working along something not human, huh?"

He turned off the device, stashing it back into the inside of his leather coat. It seemed that with the way things were, they were going to have to find these people since it seemed they were probably stationed somewhere under the cover of the large tree coverage in this forest.

"In any case, if they were walking, too, then it's safe to say that they aren't as far from us as we thought. As long as we keep a steady pace, we can probably catch up with them. I say we pick up the pace and run this time instead of walk. From the looks of it, they may be a good deal of time ahead of us, so let's throw away the idea of hiding for a while for the sake of speed."

Ivan wasnt moving.

You do not understand.

He said gravely. And Damion did not, there was a different misunderstanding in the language. The Bartender took a deep breath, and then, trying on a whim he spoke again, this time in his native tongue.

The Work King will rise, and we will all die...so that he may cleanse the world. These infested pawns are what is left of my friends and family. I would rather die fighting beside them, fighting for a change...

One hand held the hand axe, the other grabbed the massive handle of the two handed great-axe monstrosity.

...Then fight for nothing, like you. This world will die, either by Ysmidon's hand, or by its own. And on its waste will come a new one. If you mean to stop that...

He shook his head, and just incase Damion did not understand, which the Dagan likely would have assured he did. Ivan added, in a more common tongue.

...Ve have nozhing else to talk about.

And now the slash was coming.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 16, 2009 8:30 pm

"No matter which side is the prisoner in this case, if at all, it's still a lead," replied Tenkai. "But I'll stick to the trees. They won't slow me down. In the meantime, you stay visible and go at as fast of a pace as you wish."

Tenkai liked this little Empty Fort strategy they were pulling. It may not have been nearly as large scale as Zhuge Liang's, but it'd work nonetheless. If the ones they were tracking were hostile, then leading them to believe Chen was alone would put Tenkai in a good position to react should anything go wrong.

Once Chen decided to move, Tenkai would follow, keeping up the pace by bounding from branch to branch once more.

Damion's face fell more and more as Ivan spoke, his jaw clenching tighter and tighter, arms hanging at his sides as he slumped alittle as if in defeat. He had nothing to say to that, nothing to say to change Ivan's mind.

" I'm sorry...."

He did not try to stop Ivan from grabbing his axe, nor did he seem to be looking at the bartender's body anymore, his green eyes focused on the floor as the axe began to move. It was fast, as one would expect but it was after all a two handed weapon. Damion's only weapon was his body, and it moved faster than any man wrought weapon ever could. His body dipped low to the ground, his right leg stretched out far behind him, his left knee almost to his chest as he slashed his left hand across the flesh of Ivan's stomach, dragging those sharp digits across.

Blood, bile, likely worms would follow the slash, but Damion's right hand would have chambered in the slash, fingers tight together and clawed tips pointed forward he snapped his hips around, right hand slicing into the newly opened gut just above the waistline, driving in with all his strength, all the way till he felt them erupt out of the back and curled them around the bendy pole that made up the larger mans spine. He didn't care about the hand axe, the big axe, any form of retaliation, if he did it would interrupt what he was trying to accomplish as his left hand smashed forward against the flesh of Ivan's body, providing a stable base for Damion to flex and pull, ripping out a small but undoubtedly vital part of Ivan's spine.
