Crossbows and Longbows for Lasguns and Helguns, slings for grenade throwers, oil throwing units for flamers or melters, rough riders with lances or knights... Trebuchets, catapults, seige crossbows and seige slingshots. Cataphracts or chainmail could represent carapace armour.
If you use a bit of historical knowledge and steal borrow some ideas and minis from Fantasy, I'm sure you could do it.

-Mykal Those are pretty good ideas, except for the part where a trebuchet manages to deflect a lascannon blast. I just couldn't picture that in my mind without laughing.

If you really want to do that sort of stuff, why not just go play ******** Fantasy? You wanted to know how to model them and convey strength. This is medieval stuff, there's a reason nobody uses it, even nowadays.

This sound something like the genswick regiments (my favorite regiments in 40k.)

-Mykal I am in the process of playing fantasy. I was even thinking about starting an Empire army. THere are worlds in the Imperium almost devoid of technology. I wanted to play one of those. So yes, they still use this crap.

Pontius Pirate Those are pretty good ideas, except for the part where a trebuchet manages to deflect a lascannon blast. I just couldn't picture that in my mind without laughing. Well it is a laughable thought. I will give you that but you can't have a decent army without at least a couple tanks so your options are: 1: give up on this idea 2: Learn to have fun with a pathetic army 3: Laugh at the absurdity of a catapult surving a lascannon blast. Cause we don't have any magic point that can make an army without tanks or heavy weapons do any freaking damage or be anything but completely worthless.

You sir need to be more careful with your replies. The Imperial Guard can thrive without tanks, it can. Be effing constructive instead of downright beating it down like that.

Okay, so a lascannon burnt through one of the supports of the Trebuchet.
...
So what?

DarkElf27 Okay, so a lascannon burnt through one of the supports of the Trebuchet. ... So what? Yeah, I thought about that as well. It is feasible. How about a demolisher/earthshaker cannon? I don't see anything from fantasy living through that.
