Wii Zapper (Nintendo) -- $20 (Wii)  Zapper is simply a piece of plastic that allows you to pop your Wii remote n' nunchuck into a gun-like configuration. It's a simple design but it really opens a new world for Wii controllers when it comes to aim n' shoot games. Nintendo smartly includes a game with zapper: Link's Crossbow Training. In game you use always-popular Link to fend off hordes of enemies with his, uh, crossbow, in a series of cool mini-games.

Scene It? (Microsoft) -- $60 (Xbox 360)  Popular DVD/board game is more fun than ever on 360 thanks to 4 special controllers that come packaged with game. Watch movie clips from iconic films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Princess Bride, The Birds, Sixteen Candles n' Big, to name but a few, n' answer questions afterward by buzzin' in, Jeopardy!-style. Up to 4 people can play at same time.

Madden 08 (EA) & All-Pro Football 2K8 (2K Sports)  Startin' off top 5 sports games of year, There's a tie at top spot, so honors of best football games are these two as follows. For this year's version of Madden ($60 -- Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2/3, Wii), EA refocused on game play n' result was best action we've seen in several years. But for 1st time since EA purchased exclusive rights to NFL license another company entered the fray. 2K Sports' All-Pro Football ($20 -- Xbox 360, PS3) delivered an original n' inspired game that allowed you to build a customized team stocked with former NFL greats n' Hall of Famers. Serious football fans should pick up both games.

NBA 2K8 (2K) -- $60 (Xbox 360, PS2 n' 3)  NBA 2K series continued to wear crown of best basketball game -- period. This year's game featured detailed graphics n' fluid on-court action that we've come to expect. NBA 2K8 also upped ante for competition by improvin' artificial intelligence to make game seem more realistic.

NHL 08 (EA) -- $60 (Xbox 360, PS2 n' 3)  Competition this year between NHL 08 n' NHL 2K8 was fierce. But edge went to EA which made several great game play improvements. Fine-tunin' of Skill Stick that allows you to shoot seamlessly with a well-timed, n' aimed, flick of right stick really nailed feelin' of shootin' on fly. Overall pick-up-n'-play nature of NHL 08 made it game you want to hit ice with this season.

The Bigs (2K) -- $40 (Xbox 360, PS2/3, Wii)  The Bigs offers a fresh take on baseball n' was easily 1 of top favorites when it was released earlier this year. The Bigs features fast, excitin' arcade action in which a game could be over in 15 minutes. Some have found this a welcome reprieve from other baseball games that can literally take more than an hour to play. Game focused on a simple hittin' n' pitchin' dynamic that allows you to decide where to use accumulated power-ups.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (EA) -- $60 (Xbox 360, PS2 n' 3)  From year to year it's not an easy thing to improve a golf game. N' it's not every year that most would recommend 1 -- but latest incarnation of Tiger Wood franchise is a no-brainer for golf fans. Tiger 08 features more courses, more game modes n' better graphics than in year's past. EA also tightened controls for swingin', aimin' n' puttin' makin' game a hole-in-1.

Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) -- $50 (Wii)  Now onto best non-sports games that are highly recommended: If you own a Wii n' you don't have Super Mario Galaxy, then you're missin' out. SMG is not only best game out for Wii, it's also one of best platform games ever made. In game you control Mario on his quest across a multitude of galaxies to save Princess Daisy n' defeat Bowser. While story remains same, game play is excellent n' graphics are best we've seen on Wii to date. Sheer joy of explorin' new environments is enhanced by tight controls which perfectly blend Wii's analog n' motion capabilities.

Halo 3 (Microsoft) -- $60 (Xbox 360)  Master Chief is back with arguably game of year. Halo 3 offers a fantastic campaign that you can play alone or cooperatively over Xbox Live n' easily most polished multiplayer experience we've seen. Level of competition online combined with rock-solid matchmakin' will challenge even best gamers. But even if you're not so intense there are plenty of social modes where you can jump online n' just have a good time as well. In era of online gamin' Halo 3 has no peer.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction -- $60 (PS3)  Tools of Destruction delivers for PS3 in same way Galaxy does for Wii. Ratchet & Clank are back for another hijinks adventure that features a lot of runnin', jumpin' n' gunnin'. Duo fires up a wide array of cool weapons as they traverse each world in a fine blend of platform n' shooter. Combination of amazin' graphics n' addictive action makes this 1 of top titles for PS3 n' a must-own.

Orange Box (EA) -- $60 (Xbox 360, PS3)  Legendary Half-Life 2 franchise comes to 360 in a huge way, with complete Half-Life trilogy n' 2 extra games to give you 5 games in 1 beautiful little Orange Box. This is simply a must-have for any fan of 1st-person shooters. 2 extra games -- Immersive puzzler Portal n' Multiplayer extravaganza Team Fortress 2 -- serve as icin' on cake.

Call of Duty 4 (Activision) -- $60 (Xbox 360, PS3)  Highly respected Call of Duty franchise reaches new heights with this latest version. Besides bein' a thrillin', run-n'-gun 1st-person shooter, game brings a cinematic element that is unmatched in video game annals n' would make for a legitimate Hollywood production in its own right. You get to play special ops agents from England n' U.S. workin' to overtake a rogue regime in Middle East. State-of-art graphics alone make this worth price.

Here's a recap of 2008 NHL Winter Classic between Pittsburgh Penguins n' Buffalo Sabres--Penguins won 2-1 via shootout  An NHL-record crowd of 71,217 attended Winter Classic between Pittsburgh n' Buffalo on New Year's Day at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., 1st ever outdoor NHL game on U.S. soil.

 Ryan Miller donned a toque, fashioned out of a hockey sock, on top of his mask, while Ty Conklin featured snowflakes n' a Winter Classic theme on his mask. Miller n' Conklin both had 1 game of experience playing a major outdoor hockey game, but neither owned a victory. Miller earned a 3-3 tie for Michigan State against Michigan in 2001 "Cold War" game in front of 74,554 fans at Spartan Stadium. Conklin took loss in host Edmonton's 4-3 defeat to Montreal on Nov. 22, 2003, durin' NHL's 1st outdoor game, which drew 57,167.
