Dari shrugged and righted himself. "I don't know yet. Something." He looked to their rather extensive collection of video games. Hmm, what did he want to play today?
"Uhh... I don't know. I'll look." Toby grabbed his cellphone and headed off toward the bathroom. I'll be right back." He wanted to brush his teeth.
Dari watched his partner go and then turned to Maia. When he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.
"Be careful with him today. The attention and affection help him feel better, but he is weak. I suggest avoiding anything... any kissing? Anything like that. It's not real, it's a desperate man grasping desperately to feel anything but grief."

There was a moment's hesitation from Maia, after Dari said his piece. She nodded in understanding. Toby had lost his entire family, and someone he'd loved so much; no matter how long ago it'd been, he had every right to be needy during this time. "I'll be careful. No kissing," she promised.

Dari smiled slowly. Good, so she understood. "Don't worry, we'll get him," he said with a tiny nod, "Just not right now." He was well on Maia's side when it came to potential matchmaking.
The sink was running. Toby was brushing his teeth and thumbing through the current movies playing. No thrillers, no gangsters. He was looking through their Parental Guides for the sake of poor Maia's sanity. He spit and wandered out a few minutes later smelling softly of mint.
"Okay, I think I've got one, but we have to hustle. If we don't make it we can go to the book store or something. The theater's next to a bunch of strip malls."

It seemed Dari wanted to help her win Toby's heart. Huh. Whatever the reason, Maia beamed at him and moved to give him a hug. "Thank you," she said.
She stood and nodded when Toby entered. "Alright," she said. They'd have to hurry, and if they missed it, they'd still end up having fun. "We could get lunch after," she suggested.

Dari returned the hug and might have felt a little firmer than usual.
Toby grabbed his keys and grinned. "Ah, a girl after my own heart."
Dari smirked. If only he knew.
"There's plenty there. Like I said, strip malls. There's a serve-yourself froyo place too. Dari, you sure you don't want to come? We could just go to a later showing."
"Did you just use the word 'froyo'?"
"...I read about it on The Facebooks."

Maia wasn't sure what froyo was, but she did recognize the word Facebook. That was one of the newer things she'd heard about on the beach she'd lived on: and now that she knew what it was, she wasn't sure she saw the appeal.
"We can make Dari come next time," Maia suggested, giving Toby a smile. "Are you ready?" She offered Toby her hand. "We could stop by the cafe on the way so we don't fill up on sweets."

"We had breakfast!" Toby reminded her, then laughed. He accepted her hand, just as Dari had implied he would. "Besides, you need candy with your movie. Come on." He began toward the door. "See you later! Call me if you need me, Dare."
"Of course. I'll see you later!"

Maia grinned at him. Yes, but the coffees there were supposed to be especially good! She followed him to the door, waving to Dari. She'd text him if anything happened.
"What movie are we going to see?"

"Uhh... Something...Walk? I can't remember." He smiled. "It's a comedy, but not one of those stupid ones. I mean, if you grow to like Will Ferrel I'll have to learn to forgive you, but." He unlocked the car and hopped inside.
"Do you know what candy you want? Something we haven't gotten at the store?"

Maia wasn't sure what stupid comedies were, but she nodded as if she understood. She had no idea who Will Ferrel was either, but Toby seemed to imply that was a good thing.
"I'll have to look," She said. "What do you suggest?"

"Uh, it's all good. Avoid the Sour Patch things, I don't think you'd like them. Junior Mints and Milk Duds are classic." He glanced at the time and started out. "Yeah, we may need to wander around a while or pick another movie, unless we get lucky."

"I don't mind wandering," Maia gave Toby a smile. "I like shopping, and maybe we'll find a book Dari would like. We can look around, get lunch and then see the movie." She was happy either way. They'd get to spend time together, whatever they did. "I'll try one of the classics then."

"Well of course it's more efficient to share," Toby teased. He liked the classics too. Very little still remained from his childhood, but there were a few most easily found at the movie theater. "Have we gone to the strip malls? We can look around anyway."
He wanted to stay out. He wanted distractions. He didn't want to have to think about it.

Maia found this agreeable. She gave Toby a smile. "Alright, we'll share," she said. "I don't think so," she mused. They'd gone to a number of places, and the selkie was always happy to explore. "Do you think we'll make it on time, then?"

"It depends on when we get there and if there are any tickets left. There's a risk of ending up separated too, I don't know. Maybe it'd be better to just buy tickets for the next showing and wander for a while. We can get our pick of all of the seats." They were heading toward the "second center" of town. It was actually rather northernly but had more shops and food than the actual center.
