Never Again...Herald didn't seem to pick up on the fact that she was joking. "No Emma, you work much harder than that. Don't discredit your own training. But yes, I promise I will handle the big stuff. You don't need to wear dresses though I wouldn't mind. And if you yell for me I will come to save you." He gave her a nod, still smiling. ☽ Emma made a face. He seemed to be acting like a puppy who just chewed up a slipper. She wasn't sure if she should chew him a new one or what. She took a deep breath as she thought over how to word what was in her head before speaking "Do... Do you think I am weak because I am a female?" she asked, hear ears pinned downward slightly. She didn't wait for him to reply "Because... I don't want to be looked at as weak because of that... too many people look at me and do that and it bothers me. Because I wasn't treated as a female when I was in the labs... we were all treated the same... no one came to save me if I needed help. I had to save myself... No one considered me weak or a damsel in distress... So I don't want to be seen like that still... At least when I am fighting. I hate being beaten and having to make others come and save me..." she said. Her gaze lowered. "So... when you say you would be humiliated if I beat you... is it because I am a woman?"☾

Never Again...Herald stared at Emma or a moment, processing her question. He usually didn't have discussions like this so it took him a moment to think about his answer. After several long moments of thinking he replied. "No and yes, in that order," he replied to her two questions with a small nod, as if that had resolved the issue in his mind. Will I be bound in chains

☽ Emma paused for a moment "You are really dense..." she muttered. She glanced up at Herald "Do you know what that sounds like when you say you would be humiliated if I beat you because of something I couldn't really decide on? Me being a woman? It sounds like you don't take me seriously as a fighter. I thought we sparred together because there was a mutual respect there and we could learn to get stronger together... Instead it sounds like you go into our fights not taking me seriously because you know you are going to beat me," her ears were all the way down now. "So no... I'm not okay and that is why..." ☾

Sabrewolf123 Never Again...Herald stared at Emma for a few moments. "I don't understand. Even if you did choose to be a woman it would still be humiliating if you defeated me. The choice or the lack of it doesn't change that at all." He continued looking down at her as he spoke with a concerned expression on his face. "And of course I take you seriously and respect you as a fighter. If I did not I would insist on more serious training until I could. We do learn to get stronger together. But yes, I never doubt that I am going to defeat you.....Do you want me to doubt myself for some reason?" He asked, cocking his head to the side slightly. Will I be bound in chains

☽ Emma glanced up at Herald for a moment and gave him a look before her gaze shifted to the ground again. She sighed as it seemed Herald still wasn't getting it. "I don't want you to doubt yourself... But... I don't know... I feel crappy getting defeated too you know... and then sometimes it just feels pointless to spar with you if it just always ends in me laying on the ground with second degree burns... I don't feel like I accomplish much or have gotten stronger that way... But then this problem extends even further with the fact that you are a bit overconfident... and sometimes there is nothing wrong with that but after going to the future and learning you died... and learning how you died... you should try and learn to be more aware of it since you were overconfident in defeating Atlas in the future and well..." Emma trailed off, a frown on her face as she continued looking at the ground. "Why would you be humiliated if I defeated you?" she asked after a few moments of silence from her. ☾

Never Again...Herald nodded with a look of understanding. "I see. No one likes being defeated Emma. I know how that feels. If you want to focus on more specific areas of your training then we can certainly do that. Training your barriers or our dodging abilities perhaps? My attacks are focused on dealing fire and physical damage. Taking it head on is suicide from most anyone so you shouldn't feel as though you are weak. It's a matter of strategy, not strength. You have nothing to be ashamed of. As for my....overconfidence, I know I made a mistake in the future with Atlas, but I won't make that mistake here. I will be ready for him and I will be stronger than him when we fight." He waited patiently as she looked down at the ground before hearing her last question. "I told you," he replied, seeming more hesitant this time since he wasn't as sure what Emma was bothered about with this. "It's for the same reason that I would not strike you in anger and the same reason that I'm careful not to hurt you when we make love. Because you are a woman, not a man. It is a man's duty to stand for the woman he loves. If you can defeat me, I've failed you because it means that I am not strong enough to save you if you are overwhelmed by an opponent or you fall in battle. It means you can't have faith that I will be there to catch you if you fall. It means I can't be a leader or a provider for you as I should be. Emma, you are my responsibility and your safety and happiness are what matter more to me than anything else. I will fight for that and when you can't fight for it is when I must fight for it the hardest. I will not make you shoulder the burden of being both my healer and my protector. I will take my role as your strength. I don't mean to say that you are weak or can't defend yourself or shouldn't fight for yourself. I mean that when you fall, it will be into my arms. ☽ Emma listened to Herald quietly and, as he spoke, her ears began perking up again. Her gaze shifted up towards Herald as he began talking about protecting her and such and that was the reason why he would be ashamed to be defeated by her. Once Herald was finished speaking, Emma paused for a moment before nodding "I got it," she said. She glanced to the side as she thought over how to reply now "I misinterpreted what you mean earlier... I just wanted to make sure you didn't see me as weak because I'm a woman... and because woman aren't really seen as very serious fighters. at least back after I escaped the labs that was how it was. Almost every time I fought and they found out my gender, these people would begin mocking me... so I am a bit on edge with that topic..." she explained. She paused for another moment again. "Even though I have known you for a while now, I... am not used to being cared for by someone... I am not used to having someone I can rely on fight for me or be there to back me up. For the longest time, it was just me. I couldn't call for help. Ever. So I am still on edge and unconsciously think I have to fight every fight on my own and win every fight on my own... So yeah..." Emma finished talking and glanced at her feet with a light blush on her face. ☾

Never Again...Herald gave a smile as he heard Emma say she understood. "I don't see you as weak for any reason. I've never mocked you for your gender. I am in fact quite glad you are a woman," he gave this last with a teasing smile. "But I understand about it feeling strange that someone is there to fight with you. I am very much the same way. Even now it is hard to shake the feeling that no one will help me in battle." He put one hand on her head, rubbing it gently. "Even so, I know you'll be there." Will I be bound in chains

☽ Emma muffled a small laugh as Herald joked about being glad she was a woman. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment as Herald put his hand on her head and began rubbing it. Hearing Herald, Emma opened her eyes again and smiled up at him before hugging him. "I love you a lot. I hope you know that," she said. Emma's tail swayed slightly as she hugged Herald "Alright, you can pick me up again." ☾
