Yeande stepped over the bouncy chair that currently held the slumped, sleeping form of Zhane. One hand dangled over the side, still wet with spit from where he'd had his thumb firmly implanted in his mouth before dozing off. He looked angelic like this... a far cry from how he'd looked when she'd discovered that he could get into the cabinets and make crumbly confetti out of the graham crackers. One bath later, he was finally dozing, and she'd taken the opportunity to go and grab the mail.
Making certain that she didn't wake the little sleeper, she dropped onto the couch and sat crosslegged with the mail resting beside her. "Bills..." she murmured, setting them aside. "Junk." She made a face as she saw the most recent deluge of 'YOU HAVE BEEN PRE-APPROVED!' and dumped it onto the floor to pick up after she was done sorting through the mail she actually wanted to keep. The last envelope was a pale pink and was addressed just to her. Sliding a clawed finger beneath the flap, she pulled it open and immediately felt her eyes go wide.
The Ijiuo's wings flared up a bit, shielding her from view as she read the letter. It was from an adoption agency that she'd contacted a few days before. Ever since Talon had finally gone through with the surgery, she'd found herself wondering if it had been a good idea at all. Granted, she'd been all for it right after Zhane's birth... when she had stitches in the one place no human being should EVER have them, and was feeling as though someone had taken a machete to her intimate areas.
Now, however, as she watched their son sleeping peacefully, she felt something tugging at her... something that overrode the remembered pain and made her want another child. Well, having one herself was no longer an option. Talon couldn't have children any longer, and she was NOT about to even consider having someone else father a baby. She supposed that the GMFC could find a way to do it in their lab, but there was no way they could afford that for quite some time.
So, she'd started looking into adoptions. However, she hadn't told Talon what she'd been up to, and was afraid that he would be angry with her for making him go through the surgery, only to want another child two weeks later. Sighing, she folded up the paper and slid it back into the envelope, her body leaning back against the couch as she stared at the ceiling. "He's going to kill me."

Zhane squirmed as Talon wrapped him in a towel and began to dry him off. He didn't mind baths much...in fact, he thought they were kind of fun, it was just that whole afterwards business where he felt cold and shivery until he was all dry and in his pajamas that he didn't care for much.
"You know its going to be winter soon...?" Talon murmured conversationally to his son who blinked up cluelessly at him through eyes that were almost completely deepened to their final green color from the baby blue they'd been. "It means everything dies for a few months and gets covered in snow. It sucks."
Zhane blinked again, and then grinned at his father, grabbing a corner of the towel and stuffing it into his mouth, his little tail wiggling and lashing in amusement as he did so.
"I wouldn't expect you to understand, but you just wait..." the ijiuo continued, sitting the baby on his lap and folding back the towel away from Zhane's head as he fumbled for the hairbrush on the end of the sink. "See how happy you are when your mother dresses you up in snowsuits that you can't move in and your nose is running constantly. But you probably won't even mind -then-, will you? You'll probably decide snow is fun to eat."
It wasn't said with any malice so much as it was muttered in a distracted half-there way so he could at least pretend there was a conversation. Yeande had been evasive lately...ever since Talon had had his surgery, actually. Oh, she'd been all right for awhile, but it hadn't lasted. She was upset about something now and she wasn't telling him what it was. And the fact that they still, despite being married, lived in two different houses, made it easy for her to hide from him.
He hated it.
Hairbrush in hand, Talon began the delicate task of combing out the snarls and tangles in his son's fine brown hair. You had to be careful...if you pulled, Zhane threw a fit. As he worked, Talon noticed something curious. Toward the roots, the brown faded away into a golden color...almost as though it had been sunbleached in reverse.
"What's this, Zhane?" he asked as his son babbled and reached for his rubber duckie perched on the edge of the tub. He examined the rest of Zhane's hair idly, finding that all over, it seemed to be growing in gold now, except for a tiny place on the left side of his bangs where it was coming in raven black.
It was a perfect inverse of Yeande's hair. Well....at least that solved the mystery of why it was that two black-haired parents had spawned a brown-haired child.
"You're taking after Yeande." he sighed, resuming the combing. "Do you know how dangerous that is?" The answer was a splash as the rubber duckie tumbled into the draining water of the tub and Zhane fussed in complaint. Talon sighed and then reached down to fetch it for him. "You want to know what I think? I think that tomorrow you and I should go and find out what your mother's malfunction has been these last few days."
Zhane gnawed the duck in greeting and then gave a tiny gasp. "Mum-ah!" he declared.
"Right." Talon nodded. "So that means get some sleep tonight. No more of this 3 AM wakeup call stuff, Capisce?" The brush was passing through the child's hair now with ease. Good enough, he decided, setting the brush back on the sinktop. Zhane was too caught up with the duck to acknowledge what was being said, not that he'd have understood it even if he HAD been paying attention.
Picking him up, Talon carried him to the nursery to find him some pajamas for the night, meanwhile his mind still buzzing with questions as he tried to remember if he'd pissed Yeande off recently somehow. For once, he couldn't think of anything he'd done that might have pushed her buttons.
He supposed he'd find out one way or another come tomorrow.

Talon arrived at Youko's doorstep the next afternoon, Zhane in the crook of his arm and dressed in a small black T-shirt Karma had gotten him from somewhere online. It proclaimed the legend "Sell your soul for a cookie" and bore the visage of a baby elder god.
Originally Talonfaust had sworn that it would be a cold day in hell before he'd put Zhane in it, but today Karma had confiscated the rest of Zhane's shirts for the laundry, leaving him with no choice (and he was quite sure it had been intentional).
He allowed himself in, having been told that he didn't need to knock anymore since he was married to someone inside...and that people were sick of having to drop what they were doing to let him in.
"Mu-muh!!" Zhane called into the housel clinging to his father's shoulder with his chubby fists.
"Shh." Talon said absently, heading for Yeande's room to see if she was there.

She was... and for a moment, it seemed that she wasn't alone. She was speaking in a hushed tone, and it sounded as if she were reassuring someone.
"... not that bad. I mean, sure he can be temperamental, but can you really blame him?" Yeande sighed then, pushing her fingers through her hair. "I love him. And do you really think I would love someone who is a bad person?"
As Talon paused at the door, there was a soft creak beneath his foot... and it was apparently enough to get a reaction from inside the room.
"Where are you going? Morwena?" Yeande got to her feet, murmuring softly that the woman didn't have to vanish every time a fly sneezed. Then she heard a noise at the door as well.
"MUMEH!!!" Zhane, by this point, was squirming in Talon's grasp and flat out refusing to keep his voice down in the slightest.

"Okay....okay!" Talon told his son, readjusting his grip on him to keep him from toppling to the floor. Wouldn't THAT be fun to explain? Zhane's interest momentarily wavered from making a racket to seeming to notice his father's wings for the first time and grabbed one of them, giving it a yank and giving a delighted squeal as it flopped and twitched in his grasp.
Talon's face contorted in pain, but he, nonetheless, opened the door to Yeande's room and slipped in. "Someone's been missing you." he told his wife, approaching and sitting on the edge of the bed with Zhane still half-over his shoulder.
"Bu'Fie!" he giggled.
"Its NOT a butterfly, and you're hurting me..." his father complained.

Smirking wryly, Yeande leaned over and around Talon, gently prying the tiny fingers loose before she scooped up the toddler and brought him towards her. "How's mummy's big boy today?" she asked, laying back on the bed with her feet dangling over the side and her arms extended upward to hold Zhane in the air. "I missed you too! Do you want to stay here for a few nights?" From the look on Talon's face, he could use the break.
She smiled to her husband then, her tail curling around his waist in a semblance of a hug. "You're looking like you need a respite."

"Me? No. I'm fine." he assured her, the bags under his eyes saying otherwise. Despite the fact Zhane was finally starting to sleep through the night, old habits died hard. Talon still jolted awake at the slightest noise and got up to make sure it hadn't been his son.
Remembering the reason he'd come, he volleyed the question over her way. "What about you, though? I haven't seen much of you since the surgery."

"I've been alright," Yeande said, her focus on Zhane, who was extending his arms and legs like Superman and letting his wings flap incessantly against his back. He let out a sharp squeal that his mother seemed more than able to ignore, despite the fact that it was ear-piercing. "Just been wrapped up in things."
Just how the hell was she going to explain this to him? Chewing on her lower lip a minute, she decided to approach the subject carefully. "Talon? Have you heard anything about post-partum depression?" It made sense...
A sense of loss, uncontrollable emotions, wanting to cry at the drop of a hat. Yeande had experienced all of that to one degree or another. Part of her wasn't sure if having another baby was the answer, but Talon's surgery had only made it worse. "I... I guess I just have gotten it into my head that I want another baby. But I know I can't have one."

Talon tensed noticeably all over at her statement. His first impulse was to be angry with her...SHE had been the one who had demanded that he get the operation done under threat of never being allowed to touch her again.
But then, the surgery really hadn't been an option. Either she or him would have had to have it done, but it had been for Yeande's safety. It was this point alone that kept his temper in check. "I've heard of it, yes." he told her, focusing on Zhane as well. "I'm sure a lot of women go through it."
He was comforted by the fact that even if she wanted to talk him into another baby, it wouldn't be a possibility. Not without surgical reversal and he would be damned before he'd go through with that. "Is that why you've not been wanting to see me? Because I had the operation done?" he inquired. If so, that was a silly reason to be avoiding him...

Shaking her head, Yeande put Zhane down beside her on the bed, much to the boy's chagrin. However, he quickly began to amuse himself by grabbing hold of her tail and chewing on the end of it, completely ignoring the conversation between his parents.
"No," she said, sitting up and moving to wrap her arms around him tightly. "No, I'm not avoiding you because of that. I..." Yeande sighed then, wilting slightly as a puppy would when confronted with a rolled up newspaper. "I've been in contact with an adoption agency... I wanted Zhane to have a brother or sister, and I can't give it to him. I figured it would be best if I looked into it before he was old enough to get jealous or claim that we don't love him."

The bed jostled as Zhane's interest drifted from her tail to the pretty designs on the bedspread and he began to crawl across the blankets, clumsily tracing the pretty pictures with his little clawtips.
Talon listened to her, not believing what he was hearing. "I--" he faltered, blinking. "You just....made that decision without me?" he asked. Now it was his turn to wilt. He was trying his damnnest not to explode and it was hard. VERY hard. "Yeande, we're married now, you're supposed to TALK to me about stuff like this!" The repressed anger robbed the potency from his statement and it came out sounding like he was whining.
Zhane's earfins perked slightly at the change of tone in his father's voice and suddenly his focus was on his parents as he blinked curiously at them.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, wings curling around herself tightly. "I know this is silly of me, and I wasn't even sure if it was something I really wanted, or if it was just the depression talking. I was certain that if I just talked to someone, I'd be told that there was a few years' waiting list and it would just die out in my mind..."
However, something in the tone of her voice was indicative that this had NOT happened as expected.

Talon sighed deeply and in disgust with the entire situation, running a hand over his brow and through his hair. He was not going to yell, he promised himself...at least not until he was safely by himself. In the car. With music blaring out of the speakers to drown him out.
But god damn it!!
"All right." he said quietly. "All right, you know what? Maybe we should talk about this again later tonight." Count to ten....deep breaths.....oh god, he didn't want another goddamned kid. ONE was enough...!!
Zhane fussed on the bedspread and pulled himself up, using Talon's shirt sleeve as an anchor and placed both hands over his father's mouth. No talking meant no more angry-sounding voices, right? Problem solved!

Yeande nearly cried right then and there. "Oh baby, I'm sorry," she whispered, scooping up Zhane again and cuddling him. She'd upset her own child, and her husband... and she still hadn't told him about Morwena. Gods, what was she going to do? Closing her eyes, she just held the boy close, nuzzling against his hair. "It's okay, we're not mad at each other. And we're not mad at you."
Slender fingers stroked against Zhane's hair, Yeande rocking him back and forth slightly. It was hard to tell, however, whether she was trying to calm him or herself. "I'm sorry," she whispered, glancing towards the closet door, towards where Morwena had been last. Had she heard all of this as well? "They... they told me that I might have a better chance than I thought."

Zhane cuddled against his mother willingly, seeming to let it go easily enough, though he didn't understand what was going on. It was easier to be happy than it was to be upset anyway. Plus, he was satisfied that he seemed to have fixed the problem by himself.
"Great." Talon said in a tight voice. It had happened again....he was justifiably pissed about crucial information being kept away from him and somehow it had all been twisted around so that he looked like the bad guy.
Why was it that HE always had to be the bad guy? It wasn't fair.
He dared to look over at Yeande again, watching the way she was protectively curled around their son and the way the light of the room shone with unnatural brightness on her eyes. He was torn between reaching over to comfort her and storming out of the room in frustration.
At length, he simply sat there, looking stupidly down at his hands. He felt much the same way he'd felt when he'd found out Yeande was pregnant...useless, like he wanted to jump out of his own skin, and like there wasn't enough room to breathe.
