Designated Hero

"Alright, you heard the lady, gentlemen."

Gabriel picked up his rifle again, turning towards Tweak before he looked down the road that they had been heading down. Three streets to go, a wounded soldier, a shop that may or may not still exist to find, and Lord knew how many zombies to go through in order to get there.

Man, this helping people out job sucked.

"Time to roll out. The sooner we get out of this place, the better."

And so Gabriel was the first to head off. Towards what, he didn't know. But he didn't want the punk complaining anymore. Besides, it was a logical choice to have someone who knew what they were doing in front. Or, that was what he kept telling himself, at least.

Drake's wry response to Saul's joke:

Drake: "I had better find a mask then. I would not want your death on my head...or my face, more appropriately."

This Tweak reminds Drake of a packrat: more concerned about his loot than anything...and more than likely to forget it as soon as he obtained it so he could acquire more shiny loot.

"Alright, you heard the lady, gentlemen. Time to roll out. The sooner we get out of this place, the better."

Drake: "I heartily agree."

Drake nonchalantly slings the katana blade over one shoulder and follows after Gabriel with his trademark ponderous stride, scanning what he could with his left eye.

Drake: I wish that I could just take off this eyepatch...

The shop?

Engaging his clubfoot to walk, sort of, Saul had to comment.

"Why're we going to a 'shop'? Shouldn't we be busy going somewhere less zombie filled?" Saul queried, still cradling his FAMAS in a half read, half idle position. Following the group now, he had no idea where he was headed. Not that he had some idea before.

(Jo, will change this if you don't like the idea)

Meeeer, thump, Weeeeeeer, thump, Meeeeeeer, thump.

The terrain was changing, the shops and small office buildings on the edge of the commercial districts gave way to houses, parks, and elementary schools. Proto-Soldier's torso spun around 360 degrees as it scanned its surroundings. Would it find anything?

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Massive rollage of the eyes at Saul, the only member of this group who's name he had an idea on. Man, leading around people from outside the town was so lame. If the zombies were not here he would have introduced them to the the local transvestite and let him give a tour. But since that guy was probably dead or off hooking, that was out of the question.

"It's this old antique store I've been wanting to get to since this whole mess started." Telling the lie was getting old apparently and at this point what were they going to do? "Good news for you fools though. Guy who owned it, hell the whole family who owned it, are ******** psychotic or some s**t. Y'know the type who think the world is going to end every ******** day? Thats what they are."

He paused and flicked his cigarette, now totally gone, off into the wreckage before continuing. "Get what I mean? Heard a little rumor that the freak stockpiled all kinds of weapons. Score those and you should be sitting pretty in this ******** up little pile of s**t."

...And right back to the middle of the group he went.

"I'm not interested in weapons..." Owle muttered, loudly enough for everyone to hear. She was, again, following closely behind Gabe. "But I'll stick with you guys till we get back to safety. By the way..."

She was finally remembering her role as team healer...she wasn't used to being able to do this stuff. She was, after all, just an apprentice.

"You want me to at least numb that for you?" she indicated Saul's injured leg. "Might make it a bit harder to walk, but you won't feel any pain, I promise."

She thought about what else she could do. "I'd rather we get out of zombie territory, and have a safe place and a good source of water before I try to clean and bind your wounds...see if there's anything more I can do. If we're stuck waiting for these guys to gather weapons or whatnot, I'll try taking care of it, then."

At the mention of getting back to safe territory, Gabriel made it a point to check his watch. As if he hadn't checked it enough already. There was a resignated sigh, and he lowered his wrist, looking over his shoulder to Tweak. He didn't say anything, but he appeared fairly irritated. Instead, he turned his attention forward before he started talking.

"We get down there, you get what you need, we pick up some spare ammunition, and then we head straight back. That's the new plan, and I'm not going to be lenient about this one."

A quick look over his shoulder to the punk.

"Got it?"

He hated it when plans fell apart. Especially when plans fell apart and the only guide happened to have an agenda. The mutated abominations running around the city were just the icing on the cake.

There he went, getting nervous again. He quickly fished out a stick of gum and popped it into his mouth, chewing quietly for once as he passed the time by scanning the roads, alleys, and buildings for any threats.

Grinning, Saul answered Owle's offer with a shake of his head.
"Thanks, you're a doll. But no, last thing I need is a numb leg when trying to run through a city."

Yeah.

No s**t.

Taking the rifle in his left, Saul raised his other arm. Drying blood clinging to his entire forearm, speckled with all manner of dirt and rocks.
"Though if you get a chance I wouldn't mind someone pulling some of the glass out of my arms."

Drake does not react to any of the group banter, instead devoting his attention to observing his surroundings.

Drake: It's a wonder we're still alive, what with our infighting and arguing...and no beasts have yet shown themselves...

This makes Drake redouble his efforts, and his free hand subconsciously reaches for his eyepatch. Drake realizes this before the hand reaches its target, and returns it to his side.

Drake: Not something I want to show off to the world...

"Hard to do while on the move..." Owle replied.

Damn near impossible, what kind of miracle worker do you think I am?

"When we stop at the shop, I'll definitely do what I can, though. Kid says we'll be there, soon, so try to hold up, okay?"

Yeah...she was definitely not the best healer in town. And she was a bit biased from seeing her own adventurer friends survive far, far worse.

Camped out as he was on the roof Gregory had a view of those coming into his area. It was odd, why would they be heading this way? What would a bunch of soldiers want with the antique shop that had been down stairs before he had moved the more valuable items upstairs. Glancing to his right he saw a few of the antiques he was currently using for water collection.

"You don't think they're looting?"

Asking no one he ducked back inside and shut down the generator. The steady rumble slowed and gave a soft whine as it stopped.

"Baptismal of fire I suppose. Perhaps I'll see how well the traps work."

Tweak might well have been the most unconcerned of the group. He seemed more intune with keeping the rifle from slapping him in the side when he walked then the zombie threat. It had been very quiet thus far, perhaps they were putting down the threat in another area of the city or something? Chances are there would have been more explosions and such though.

"Yeah, whatever you say chief." He seemed oh-so-concerned with Gabe's time limit. Instead he finally got the rifle situated and glanced over to Owle for some quick confirmation. "When we take that left turn," Pointing to said turn. ",well arrive at the place I'm talking about. I figure the owners a rotting corpse so we can just waltz on in 'kay? Well I mean soldier boy and stiffy can take point just in case some zombies are lurkin 'round. You can make with the first aid s**t then."

He, on the other hand, would just wait until he was sure it was clear and start packing up the stuff. Hopefully there would be some baskets, or even better a buggy, to throw all the stuff in that he wanted. Some other looter better not have beaten him to the good s**t!

...That would suck so hard.

And Owle suddenly shivered. Being so high up had kept her from sensing Fuller before now...and the creepy, creepy vibe nearby him. But now that she was this close...

"There's someone...well, nearby. Not a zombie, but there's...something wrong about it...not on him, but nearby him..."

She pointed. To the left.

"...that way." She shook her head. "It's not zombies, but..."

She shrank closer to Gabe, as though hiding behind him. Something was obviously scaring her, more than the idea of being in a zombie-infested city in the first place.

Now going around the corner, Saul kept the rifle high. This time expecting something. What, exactly? Just something.

The blue-haired woman seemed to have a bad feeling about the area all of a sudden. Moving at a gradual walk-limp. Relieving a hand from the rifle to readjust the helmet on his head, still unclasped.

Saying nothing, just watching.

He glanced over his shoulder towards Owle as she spoke of the presence of something nearby. He wasn't quite sure what she meant, but, judging by her reaction, he figured he better be cautious.

His hand went out, almost like a little protective barrier as he gestured for Owle to get fully behind him, if she wasn't already. Tweak had already said that the place was right around the corner, and so it was. When he went around the corner, he looked at the nearest building. No real luck as far as signs were concerned, they were all smeared with a red mist.

A quick glance over his shoulder to Tweak.

"So, which one is it?"

The rifle was now shouldered and ready, his left hand having moved to a steadying position the moment that he had finished with the little 'protect the weaponless one' gesture.
