Forever Young
Episode 11: Panic Attack
©2003 Kitty Ocean

Naraku and Matsuru ate from the food on the table. Naraku still didn't have many table manners, but luckily she managed to keep him from being embarrassed too much.
"Do you want some more girl?" The farmer's wife asked nicely. "Does it taste good?"
Naraku nodded. "This taste good!" She smiled and took a piece of bread.
The farmer's wife smiled with a sweet face. Matsuru saw it and he smiled as well. The woman really adored Naraku and her childish behaviour. For a moment the thought crossed his mind. Maybe it would be better if Naraku stayed with her...?
But he quickly pushed away the thought. No, Naraku wouldn't be safe here. Amordus wanted Naraku for someone. Sure, this time she managed to save herself, but what about next time? And these nice farmers... they would be helpless against the Black Knight and his army!
Though Matsuru wondered... who did the Black Knight work for? After all, Amordus had said: 'Our Lord...'.
The farmer's wife took out a bowl with something that looked like purple gruel. "You want to have a desert girl?" She asked nicely. "The Sagato Apples are great this year; my husband traded them in the village."
Naraku almost put a hand in the gruel but Matsuru stopped her. Then he put something of it in a smaller bowl and handed Naraku a spoon. He then started eating from his own bowl. Naraku observed him, and then imitated his behaviour.

After dinner the farmer took a stroll with Matsuru while the farmer's wife suggested to give Naraku a decent bath. "Aye son, where are you heading to?" He asked.
Matsuru wasn't sure if he could trust the farmer, but he was so nice and generous. "North." Matsuru admitted.
"North?" The farmer asked. "That's quite a rough choice. Any place particular?"
Matsuru raised his shoulders. "Just where the High Ones will guide us."

The farmer's wife took a bowl of warm water from the stove and poured it over Naraku. "Aye, sweet girl." She smiled. "If only I had a daughter like you..." She started brushing the wet hair while Naraku was more fascinated by the bubbles.
After the bath the woman helped Naraku get dressed and started brushing her hair once more. Since the hair was now short, the farmer's wife was done quite quickly.
"Why stop?" Naraku asked confused.
The farmer's wife looked up. "I'm done sweetie." She smiled.
"But Matsuru always take long." Naraku remembered.
"Your hair is short darling." The farmer's wife said. "I could continue brushing but I'm already done."
"Hair short?" Naraku asked. The farmer's wife took a mirror. Naraku looked at it. "Where is hair?" She asked.
"Did you used to have long hair?" The woman asked.
But Naraku didn't notice her question. "Where is hair?" She said now louder. "Hair gone! Where is hair?!" Naraku jumped up, screaming her lunges out. "Where is hair? Where is hair?!"
Since Matsuru and the farmer had heard her scream, they bumped into the room where they found a panicking Naraku. Matsuru quickly grabbed her and tried to ease her down.
"It's all right!" He hushed. "Calm down Naraku!"
"What's the matter?" The farmer asked.
"I don't know." His wife admitted. "She suddenly started screaming that her hair was gone!" It had shaken her.
"Calm down!" Matsuru tried again.
"Where hair go?" Naraku cried. "Where hair go!"
Matsuru looked at her. He now noticed that Naraku had never realised what the results of her actions were. "You cut it off, remember?" He tried. "When you had to free yourself from that soldier." He said it softly, with a whispering voice.
"But hair gone!" Naraku cried.
Matsuru smiled. "It's not such a big deal." He assured her. "It will grow on again." Then he saw the faces of the farmers. He had to explain this! He just had to! But how could he explain this?
"I'm sorry." He said then. "I didn't know this was going to happen. It's just that Naraku... has been put under an evil spell by a witch." Matsuru made up. "She lost all her memory as well as how to be a normal girl. So this was her first haircut."
Both farmers nodded. "So that's why you want to go north." The farmer said. "You hope that if you get far enough from the witch, the spell will be lifted!"
Matsuru thought that what the man said made no sense at all, but simple nodded. "I'm really sorry this happened. "
The woman's face softened up. "You poor thing!" She said and walked at the girl. "Don't worry, it will become long again." She saw Naraku drying her eyes. "Come, then I'll brush your hair again."
Matsuru looked at the woman that guided Naraku away. What he had said about her, was a lie. But what if... it was true?

That night Naraku lay against Matsuru in the hay. It was the only place for them to spend the night. But Matsuru couldn't sleep. His lie was bothering him. Not the fact that he lied, but the fact that what he said made sense! What if Naraku was indeed under a spell!
Could it be that a magic user enchanted Naraku? He now so wished Blade was here, to talk about it. He rolled at his side and thought about it some more. Who had enough power to whip a whole person's mind clean?
Nobody... but the High Ones.
Why would the High Ones clean a person's mind? That was a terrible thing to do! That person must have done something terrible then.
And then it hit him. Naraku's infernal powers... could it be she was not only a Magic User, but that she used to be an evil one as well? An evil sorceress before the High Ones cleaned her mind?
Then what would happen if she would remember it? Would she turn against him? Then it would be very dangerous if the spell was lifted!
But then Naraku grabbed his hand in her sleep and started softly chirping; a sound he had never heard her produce before. No, she could not be an evil sorceress. Not this girl. This girl was like divinity.

The next morning, Matsuru and Naraku waved good bye. Long after the farm had vanished from sight, Naraku was still waving. "You can stop now Naraku." Matsuru stopped her.
Naraku lowered her arm. "I look in mirror." She admitted. "Hair not long." She looked sad.
Matsuru laughed. "That's because it will not grow within a night!" He smiled. "It will take a while, but it will be long again before you know it!"
"Tomorrow?" Naraku asked hopefully.
Matsuru shook his head, seeing Naraku getting sad again. "It will take many nights before it's long again." He admitted.
"5 nights?" Naraku raised 5 fingers; her whole hand.
Matsuru swallowed. "No, many more."
Naraku looked at her hand, and then raised her other hand. "10 nights?"
Matsuru shook his head. "It will take many, many, many more nights. More than you can count now anyway."
Naraku was astounded. "There is higher number than 20?!" She exclaimed.
Matsuru sighed. "Okay, let's do math again." He suggested. "Listen carefully." And he started reciting the numbers from 1 till 100.
Naraku then followed his example, tripped a few times around 35, 54, 67 and 88, but Matsuru helped her each time.

When the night started to fall, Matsuru looked for a camping place. He made a small fire when he found one and Naraku sat down. "Matsuru?" She asked. "Why Blade go away?"
Matsuru looked sad. "I think... he's afraid."
"Why?" Naraku asked again.
Matsuru looked at her, actually being afraid to tell her this. But he had to do it anyway; she had to right to know. He took her hands. "Because of this." He said.
"Hands?" Naraku wondered.
Matsuru continued. "Do you remember that fire that killed people?" He asked. "The fire you created?" Naraku looked confusing; she didn't realise she made that fire! "That's why people want you. You have magic in you."
"What is magic?" Naraku asked.
Matsuru sat down. "Magic is that if you want something to happen, it will happen."
"I want Blade back." Naraku stated.
"I don't know how big your powers are yet." Matsuru admitted. "But that's why Amordus attacked us. That's why he wanted to take you away from us."
"Amordus not nice!" Naraku yelled. "He want hurt Blade and Matsuru! I not like! I not like!"
Matsuru saw her panicking again. He grabbed her. "I'm right here!" He assured her. "And I will never leave you!"
"But why Blade go?" Naraku then sniffed.
"He is afraid that if he stays with us, he'll die." Matsuru said coldly. There was no other way to bring this. "Amordus survived your attack. And he'll return. Blade knows that. Next time... we might not be this lucky."
Naraku looked sad. "I not like Amordus. He come for me? Then I not nice person."
Matsuru was silent. Even though she couldn't say it the right way, she took the blame of the danger on her shoulders. It was true; being with her would mean danger. It was her fault... and she knew it.
Matsuru lay her on the ground. "No, not true." He whispered. "You are the nicest person in the world." Matsuru put a blanket they had got from the farmers over her. "Don't worry, just go to sleep."
Naraku obeyed and closed her eyes. Matsuru took his own blanket and lay down as well. Her words kept him awake for a long time, but in the end even he feel tired asleep.

Far away, Blade lay in the grass as well, near a fire. His horse grazed from the green grass and it was late, but Blade couldn't fall asleep.
From his pocket, he took a small medallion. On the lit was a bird carved, with a ruby as eyes. Blade opened the medallion and inside there was a compass... pointing north...

Forever Young
Episode 12: The arrow North
©2003 Kitty Ocean

3 weeks. 3 weeks had passed ever since Matsuru had met Naraku. Ever since they had left the farm, Matsuru used all his time to educate Naraku. He taught her more language, as well as math.
He also started to teach her things about nature that he knew. But more important, he taught her some manners, because a few times when he tried to sell things, Naraku interrupted them over and over again.
Riding on Apple and Pear through the woods, Naraku looked around. "Oak." She pointed at a tree. "This tree is Oak."
Matsuru nodded. "That's correct." He looked around. "But maybe we should stop; we've been riding for a long while now. What do you think?"
"I am not tired." Naraku bent over. "Apple tired?" She asked. However, Apple didn't seem to reply. "Apple is tired." Naraku said.
"How do you know?" Matsuru asked.
Naraku raised her shoulders. "Apple not speak." She said. "But... I just know."
'Maybe it's her magic...' Matsuru thought, but couldn't be sure since he was not a Magic User and Naraku still didn't knew she had magic within her. "How about you Pear, are you tired?"
Pear looked back and shook his head. Yet, he then stopped and Matsuru jumped off. He turned to Naraku, who now jumped off herself. "Rest?" Naraku asked.
"Yes, let's rest." Matsuru agreed. "I'll go and try to find some fresh food." Matsuru gave Naraku her sword. "You stay here."
Naraku nodded. "I stay here." She confirmed.

Matsuru walked away, into the forest. He was wondering if he would be able to find any food at all! Right now it was summer and he could find some fruits, but that was all! And since he wasn't a great skilled hunter...
But when Matsuru saw a rabbit's lair, he got a bit of hope and made a trap.

Naraku looked around. Apple and Pear didn't have much more weapons any more; most of them were sold. However, Matsuru had decided to keep a few in case of an emergency. "Why do you not speak?" Naraku asked the horses. Of course, the horses didn't reply. "You think, like people, but you not speak. Why?"
Silence was all the answer she got. Suddenly she heard a branch snap. She turned around, curious yet cautious, holding her sword ready for action.
Naraku looked at the bushes. They slowly moved, and then the creator revealed itself. With orange eyes, just like hers. Yet, the creator was small, covered with fur and completely black.
Apple and Pear instinctively neighed and jumped before Naraku.
The wolf slowly released a soft growl. Both Apple and Pear protected Naraku the best they could. A wolf alone was no match for these 2 horses. But where 1 wolf was, there were usually more.
Slowly the wolf stepped back. Apple and Pear were satisfied, until something pushed them away. "Wait!" Naraku yelled and ran after the wolf.
Apple and Pear tried to stop her, but Naraku was agile and slim. She vanished after jumping between 2 trees. With a load neigh they tried to call her back, but when Naraku is focused on something, she doesn't let go any more!
The leaves crashed themselves against her body but Naraku didn't pay attention. The sound she made was enough to chase away each animal in sight. The wolf jumped down from a rock, followed by a soundless thud from Naraku.
The wolf turned around, as if it was surprised of Naraku's silent landing. The orange eyes met each other. Naraku's short purple hair danced in the wind. Her hand was stretched forward, as if she wanted to say: 'Please, don't go!'
For moments they looked at each other, the maiden and the black furred wolf. Then the wolf turned around and dashed off again.
"Wait!" Naraku yelled and ran after him again.
Suddenly Naraku tripped, but instead of falling, she got pulled in the air. Lying on her back, Naraku took a few seconds to get things back online.
Naraku felt the ropes of the net where she was caught in. She almost lay upside down and she had never seen a net before. The floor was about 1.5 metres away from her.
Then the leaves rustled again. Naraku expected the wolf to return, but out came a man! "And of course, Sandolean has done it again!"

Matsuru returned to the camp, seeing Apple and Pear standing still. "Hey, something wrong?" Then he noticed Naraku was gone. "Where is Naraku?"
Pear turned around and grabbed Matsuru's jacket. He pulled him towards the bushes and then lowered his head so that Matsuru had to follow.
"What the?" Matsuru asked when he suddenly saw something... paw prints... from a wolf!
Fear took possession of his entire body. "Oh High Ones, did that wolf grab Naraku?" Yet there was no trail of blood. "Oh no..." He then realised it. "Don't tell me she went after it!"
Matsuru grabbed his sword and ran away.
Leaves rustled against him as well, and Matsuru had trouble spotting the tracks, but luckily they were visible enough. "Naraku, please be safe!" He begged.

Naraku tried to turn around in the net, while the man called Sandolean kept on yapping. "Well Missy, it has been quite a show back there." He told. "Taking out Mardok with one blow, but of course I was fast enough to avoid your powers from hell." But Naraku actually didn't listen. "Amordus didn't even bother to look who survived; he immediately went off to our Lord. But I stayed behind because I knew I could fulfil his task. I succeeded where he failed!"
Naraku then finally spoke. "What is this?" She asked curious.
"This, my sweet prey, is a trap!" Sandolean smiled. "And you fell for it! But, there could be no doubt about it since I made that trap in the first place!"
"I want out." Naraku stated.
Sandolean laughed. "No, you won't get out missy! You are my captive now!"
"Captive?"
"Yes, you are my prisoner!"
"Prisoner?" Naraku looked doubting. "But my name is Naraku!"
"Naraku!" Matsuru jumped into the scene, with his sword ready for action. "Get away from her!"
Sandolean drew his sword. "I remember you, you were that dweep we had to kill!" He laughed. "And that mission I will fulfil as well!"
"Huh?" Matsuru was confused, but before he could ask for explanation, Sandolean dove on him, with his sword raised high.
Matsuru reacted fast and the metal collided with each other. Matsuru kicked Sandolean back and then attacked him.
Sandolean reacted fast as well, and managed to block Matsuru's blow, even though it cost him a lot of strength. He jumped backwards, followed by an attack forward.
Matsuru flipped backwards to avoid the soldier. Naraku looked at the 2 men fighting. "Fighting is not good!" She yelled. It brought memories back to her. "Matsuru!"
Distracted by her fearful cry, Matsuru instinctively turned around, calling her name. Sandolean saw a gap in his defence and raised his sword.
Suddenly the sword clashed on the ground and Sandolean screamed of agony. Matsuru turned around and saw Sandolean holding his arm that was pierced by an arrow. Blood showed itself to the outside world.
Matsuru looked up, and his breath stopped.
"Attacking in the back means not having honour!" Blade had another arrow on his bow. "Scram, NOW!"
Sandolean looked with hateful eyes. He bit on his teeth, trying to ignore his pain. "You haven't heard the last of ME!" He hissed and hurried away.
Naraku ignored the soldier getting away. "Blade!" She happily exclaimed. "You come back! I am very happy! I like that Blade is back!"
Blade smiled. "So, you learned her more words huh?" He drew a knife and cut the net. "I know she can be annoying sometimes, but you don't have to put her in a net!"
Matsuru wanted to reply that he hadn't put her into that, but then saw Blade was only joking. When the hole was big enough, Naraku wanted to get out, but her foot was stuck in the net. She fell forwards but both boys managed to catch her in time.
Blade helped her out while Matsuru was holding her. When Naraku felt the ground on her feet again, she turned around and hugged Blade. "Blade is back! I am very happy!"
"Yeah well," Blade started. "You guys need me." He grinned. "I'm gone for almost a week and you end up in misery." He turned around. "Let's get back. Though I have no clue where your camp is."
Matsuru pointed the way. "Where is your horse?"
Blade whistled and his horse came. "Here Dusk!" He yelled and patted the horse over it's nose. "Good horse!"
"Dusk?" Naraku asked.
"Yeah, I named this newbie Dusk." He smiled. "Show me the way!"

Matsuru was very happy Blade had returned, but it also brought trouble along. While Naraku acquainted herself with Dusk, and introduced the horse to Apple and Pear, Matsuru sat down next to Blade. "So..." He started. "Why did you return?"
"Does it matter?" Blade replied.
"It does." Matsuru answered. "You love Naraku."
"So do you."
Matsuru nodded. "True." Silence fell. How would Blade feel about him? Would he have forgiven him for the village incident? Probably not, and asking about it wasn't a good choice either. He would wait till Blade would start about it himself.
Both boys looked at Naraku. "Dusk, this is Apple. Pear, this is Dusk." They heard her say.
"How did you find us?" Matsuru asked.
Blade took out a medallion, with a bird carved on it. "Passed from father to son. One day my son will have it." He opened it and the compass got revealed. "But for now it will guide me..."
And both looked at the arrow that always points North. And this time... it also pointed to Naraku...
