"Nine," the smoky thing said. "She was awfully lonely. It was before her brother found her, and she had plenty of time to do nothing at all, so she read some books, stole some things, and poof! Two fires and an unfortunate accident later, here I am!"

Osso nodded, impressed.

"Ju...something, right? Crow's brother's name?" the question was a little out of the blue.

The ghost nodded.

"Julian. They named each other, you know," it said. "It was a game they used to play. Crow was Sarah, and Julian was, well, Julian. They'd pretend they were somewhere else, other people."

It paused, and gave another cold sigh.

"She was alone so often when she was little. Outside me and her brother, no one spoke to her at all," it added.

Another nod was given, though this time more solum and sad. He watched the smokey figure through the hair that fell over his face as he propped up his head with his hand.

"I couldn't imagine having to live like that. All alone and all." It was true. He had always had his mother, pets, people in general around him, talking to him. Solitude was a nice thing every now and then, but not to the extent of what Crow apparently went through. he didn't even think his own mother had had much solitude with the way Nana called the house like some obsessed physco.

The ghost made a strange sniffling sound, resting its chin on hazy hands.

"It is hard, living in a house where your own family hates you," it said sadly.

It was probably that sniffle that caused Osso to say his next words,"maybe we should just change the topic...I don't think a circus, as boring as this one is, is the right place for this."

The ghost nodded.

"You are right. Osso is very smart," it said, sounding a little choked up. It suddenly disappated and Doll's eyes fluttered open. She stretched and wiggled a bit, as though trying to get comfortable in her own skin again.

"There. No more itchies," she said cheerfully. "What should we do now? If anything. Mayhap naps are in order..."

"Naps?" Osso asked as he watched Doll become Doll again. He was glad the sullen aire about them was gone, but taking a nap was just a really odd question and thing to do at the moment.

"No naps? Okee dokee...hmm. I could...no, Julian said not to set things on fire any more...oh dear. I'm sorry, Osso-Friend. I have no ideas," she said mournfully. "Unless you want to go into another tent?"

She glanced at the tents behind her, unimpressed. Unless there was a fire-breathing sea monkey hidden in there somewhere, she was definitely losing interest.

Osso let out a long sigh and fell backwards onto the grass, arms out and away from his sides. "This. Sucks." He stated bluntly.

"Too bad there isn't some thing with uh....fire?" he threw the sentence out there from sheer boredom.

Doll copied Osso, pillowing her head on her arms.

"It certainly does. Like a vacuum," she said, dispirited. "Evil, evil vacuums."

At Osso's words, Doll smiled in a rather sinister fashion.

"If you do not tell Julian, I have something to share," she said conspiratorially. Digging into the pocket of her army coat, she withdrew a handful of string, a glass eye, two parakeet feathers, and a bundle of red candles. Upon closer inspection, one would see that the candles were actually rather small firecrackers.

"I've been saving them for a special occasion," she said. "I do not know what they do, besides make very loud sounds."

Green_Eyes

The prospect of sucking on two lollies at once was an excellent one and, for a few wonderful moments, Rose's eyes had darted from Kay, to Delphi and then to the sucker that was in Kay's hand.

Then, Delphi devoured the lolly and whatever hopes and dreams Rose had previously had dissapeared.

Ah, well. She still had her lolly. Rose sighed contentedly, wrapped her arms around her mother's neck and continued to stare suspiciously at Delphi. Anybody that told lies about Woo deserved to be supervised carefully.

"It might be horrible of me," Green whispered to Kay, "but I've recently discovered that sweets are wonderful distractions. Although, I only use them as a last restort."

Kay grinned at Green over Delphine's head. "I've had to resort to bribery a bit myself lately." She glanced down at Delphine apparently content with the lolly.

"Must say," she glanced quickly back at Delphine, "sweets do make a nicer bribe than f-i-s-h." The seer paused to make sure Delphine hadn't figured out what she was talking about, but the fish-kitty was still happily sucking away. "Not that fond of seafood myself, Delphi on the other hand loves it."

Delphine was also staring suspiciously at Rose from her mother's arms. As soon as she'd finished her sweetie she'd make her give her Woo back!

She paused for a moment to shift uncomfortably in her mother's arms. Hmm... her tummy was feeling a tad funny...

Osso sat up when he saw Doll's smile and when she started fishing around in her pockets. Leaning closer, he noted the firecrackers and his eyebrows rose.

"Make loud bangs and semi-blow little things UP," he said with enthusiasm. "We desperately need to put these to use, you know," his own smirk lit his face as he gave a sly look at Doll.

"Then it is just the kind of excitement we need," Doll said, a sly look of her own crossing her face briefly. After digging into another pocket for a moment, she produced a cheap plastic lighter and sparked a flame into life. "Care to do the honors?"

She offered a cracker to Osso, smiling innocently.

Osso gingerly took one of the little excitement-poppers. "But of course," he said before moving onto his feet.

Hollow gaze scoped out their current area in search of a prime target. So many people were milling around the animal tent...A wicked little smile crept onto his face and he gave the cracker in his palm a short squeeze.

Soon the wick of the fire cracker was ignited by the lighter's flame. Osso took a few quick steps closer to the tent entrance and with a rather nice throw, lobbed the thing over the entrance-group where it landed on the grass.

The boy couldn't help but laugh when it went off with a multitude of cracks, bangs and caused a nice array of disturbed cries, yelps, swear words, and animal noises.
