I love any book by Steinbeck. East of Eden is my favorite. And Of Mice and Men.
Think about the bunnies, George...think about the bunnies.

Get ready for every author you "Need 2 Read": The late David Gemmell. Terry Pratchett. For those that e younger, Brian Jaques. Tim Severin. Tom Lloyd. Oscar Wilde. J.R.R. Tolkein, Phillip K. d**k. Stephen King. Tom Sharpe. Just recently, Ben Elton.
I do not count J.K.Rowling as an Author any longer. She is a sell-out, and the last three were truly awful. I'm sorry HP nerds that say that she made your life better, but this is my opinion.

Heh- I wouldn't go that far, but I was very disappointed. I was one of those original HP fans that liked it before it became popular, but after a while it just got a little too emo and archetypal.

Hmm.... Need a good book to read myself, though. Read tons of Terry Pratchet, though. blaugh

It was corny with a capital C... stare It was horrible. Most of the stuff she wrote in the Epilogue I felt were irrelevant and I there are still a whole bunch of things I wanted to know... Besides... Ron marries Hermione, Harry marries Ginny? Yay. So obvious.

Ohmigosh. I haven't read that far. My husband and I have been reading it to each other and it takes a while to read through anything...I didn't know every one got married. I"m used to the books forum where they white out giveaways. I'm so sad now....

cool; I think I've heard of that before! 3nodding

Does anybody know a book written by a non-European (or at least British)/American author, or a book that was originally written in another language and translated to English? We have to choose one for summer, and I have no idea what to read sweatdrop

Chekhov wrote short stories-does that count?

Orrrr Poor Folk by Dosteovsky is pretty short, originally in Russian.

Thank you for the suggestions and I'll be sure to try to read them, but that was a year or two ago so it's just for fun now. blaugh

I ended up reading The Count of Monte Cristo which was actually a pretty good book, despite its enormous length.

Gosh, it's incredibly bizarre to read something I wrote so long ago and to think how long I've been on Gaia! (And how much I used to use emoticons, too...)

ehhh...I'm reading Johnny Tremain for schol right now, but nothing just for fun. I really need some suggestions. Something a 13 year old girl would read, but no NOT Twilight.

Why don't you try Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials? It's okay for teenagers, a bit like a young Sci-Fi.

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is a great book for people who like pondering. A lot of the content revolves around actual happenings, just with an interesting outlook. I bet Cindy would like it.

Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman. I got it for my dad, he turned 49 on Saturday! I haven't read it, but I'm planning on it. Funnily enough a lot of the stuff I have read in it reminds me of Nuefy-ness, even though he happens to be a Republican that I can't imagine throwing a molotov cocktail...sorta.

I've never been a fan of sci-fi, sorry guys. But Phillip Pullman, he's the one who caused the big stink with the Christians over his atheist children's book right?

Another series by Phillip Pullman, more of a chick-kinda book... is the Ruby In the Smoke trilogy. I'm not sure of the name of the trilogy, but that is the first book in it. It is about this girl figuring out the mystery of her fathers death and how it tied into the opium trade and why people want to kill her over it.
Very cool books, when I was about 16-17. I haven't read them since, but I really liked them.

Some must reads for the older people here: Anything by Franz Kafka, George Orwell, John Steinbeck and The Catcher in the Rye.
