Ya'll do know there is a difference between famliars and totems right? xD It seems some people are confusing them.

Elusive M Ya'll do know there is a difference between famliars and totems right? xD It seems some people are confusing them. This has already been stated in this thread. It is very easy to get the two confused. They have certain things in common, like they're both there to help and guide you. But familiars are physical beings and totems are more like spirits.

you're animal totem is not always the animal you like, for example, everybody would like a strong animal, like a wolf or bear, or tiger.A shaman ((he has his own site XD you probably saw it when you did research abotu totems)) had an ant, and he wasn't really happy with t, untill he discovered the ablitities of the ant further.And i'm actually nod sure if your totem can be a mythical animal confused Mine is a snake.Probably a sea serpent.I dreamed about a sea serpent, although it was a weird dream, and when i was little, i read a fairytale about a snake, we also went to a zoo, and the lady from the zoo said i could touch one of the snakes.I wasn't fascinated with snakes, or it wasn't my favorite animal or some sort.But then i did some research and noticed it's my totem animal.Here are some tips to find your totem animal:
You're totem animal isn't always your favorite animal.It could be an animal you're afraid of.
Maybe you had some encounters with that animal, maybe you always bump up a photo with your totem animal on it.
You probably saw that animal in a dream or nightmare
many poeple think their totem is a cat, but i think that's because cats are very common, and there are alot cats running around.

ive been performing this spell for about a week an' a half after i borrowed a book from a friend. she says hers is a dragon (i cant tell you why, i forgot to ask her) but ANYWAYS! ive been having all these dreams about animals, and i never dream about animals usually! i remember a few animals like otters, hawks, fish, cats, and i think there was a snake in there... is the dream solidly BASED ABOUT the animal, or does your totem just appear (and in that case, why are there so many animals suddenly popping up in my dreams)? cuz im having trouble getting past all the static.

That's normal... well, that's how it was for me as well. I had dreams about animals for two weeks straight. And some of them were very odd... I'll never forget those talking hippos banging their heads into the wall repeatedly.
Anyway, you can have more than just one animal totem (certain cultures believe that we have 9). However, not all of the animals in your dreams will be your totems. Only the ones with significance in your dreams. For example, one of my totems is a young lion (well I believe him to be). I had two specific dreams about this lion. In one dream I rescued him from a zoo where the animals were badly treated. And in the other he saved me from another animal, I believe it was another lion, that was trying to kill me.
And then there was one dream where I could see everyone's animal totems and when I was looking for mine I was looking for a white tiger with wings.
Just look for the animals that stand out the most to you. Does that help any?

I have a Crow, who I'm really close to and is always there to guide and give me insight in many situations as well as assurance whenever I'm in unfamiliar ground. I also have a Squirrel, who I only see when things are getting topsy turvy or I'm taking on too many things and it's time to find balance. And then there's the Cat, who almost always seems to be back from a hunt whenever I see him and has a really wry sense of humor. He's more like my take charge mentor and warns me when it's time to be more aware of my surroundings and take care.

Im not really sure about this, but I think my animal might be the blackbird. I say blackbird because Im really not sure whether the birds I always see are ravens or crows. We have a lot of them at my school and every time I see one (or two) of them, I get this odd sense of kinship and a protected feeling. Like the birds are looking out for me, or something.
I dont know if that means totem animal or just animals that I really like, but I still think its kind of cool. I usually tend to notice the blackbirds more than, say, the seagulls that are always scavenging at lunch.
Either way, I always make it a point to nod in acknowledgement whenever I see a blackbird.

if animal totem can also be called a spirit guide then mine would be a fox and wolf. those are two that have showed up so far.

Mine would probably be a dragon, it is my favorite animal. Possibly also a hawk/falcon. Haven't actually had any encounters that I can remember, other than that whenever I go on trips I see all kinds of hawks/falcons (can never distinguish between them). I have been told though that seeing a hawk on a trip means that they are keeping an eye on you to ensure a safe journey and that you should thank them (out loud or in your head is fine) whenever you see them.
My girlfriend (who is also in this guild, wing-goddess) recently got a guided meditation cd her reiki master used in a class, and one is to find your power animal. hers is a kirin, which is a mythical asian creature that is half dragon and half deer. a lot of people confuse it for a unicorn though. The chinese view it as more dragon, the japanese as more deer, hers is the japanese. I need to do this soon

yes as he said...mine is a Kirin....which surprised the heck out of me considering I didn't even know they existed....just know when I did the meditation I saw this deer....but it was weird...but it looked the closest to a deer so that is what I called it...but it was oddly shimmery when the light hit it(turns out the light was hitting scales that was poking out from under the fur) and it's feet and tail were wrong....later I was pondering this and asking for help on how to figure out if a deer was in fact my power animal or not(which in my head just didn't seem quite right) well...Andrew(dragoon_2004) and I went to the store....and we decided to try and find a Japanese beer to try and drink(when I went to Japan I was too young to drink and I was always curious to try it since everyone said it tasted batter than American stuff) anyways.....when eating at a Japanese place the menu mentioned Kirin Beer(Andrew originally thought that was the Japanese word for unicorn, but that was a misconception) anyways...on the bottle it had the description of what one was...I was curious, because it seemed similar to what my animal looked like...so the next morning I looked it up.....and as he said it is a deer/dragon cross that is confused sometimes for a unicorn(it's the highest ranking animal in Japanese mythology and the third highest in China)....this is funny because all three of thos animals I was especially fond of as a child(I admit I went to try and feed the unicorns when I was a kid....not sure whether they actually liked the carrots I left though >>;;; )...and another thing that affirmed this for me...was that it is ascociated with the animal the giraff(for whatever reason) and that day my reiki master was doing my card of the day and I was still at that point trying to figure what my animal was....and she pulled out the giraff......pretty funny really....so yeah that's my story with that....still want to know what my protector animal is...my reiki master said she had a meditation for that too but I haven't gotten to try.....I have a feeling a tiger will show up somewhere though(tiger is also my chinese zodiac and I have always had an affinity for them along with other large cats)
I've also felt kinships with wolves, dragons, falcons/hawks, black panthers/jaguars(which I have had a dream about before), unicorns/horses,cats(obviously),foxes, pheonixes.....dang......I have a lot O.o...oh...I like snakes too....but I don't think thats a guide for me at all >>;;;;.......going to stop now
Edit: I have a drawing I am trying to work on of it....it's not one-hundred percent correct but I'm working on it....I'll try and post it sometime
