One last time she awakes. The scene is scarlet and even the sky has turned violent as the sun--is it dawn or dusk, her sense of direction is suddenly absent--hides at the edge of the horizon. Even the lake has tendrils of soft tinged ruby plumes floating through it. And this,
this, is her time to prove herself. Not that she is a hero but that she can be a mother.
Pale green eyes widen in surprise at the creature before her. It is not the species that takes her breath away, nor even the coat of dusted red that alludes to its injury. No, it is the resemblance of it to herself that chokes her throat closed. (
"I'm fine." What an atrocious lie that has always been.)
The lioness bares its teeth at the doe and she takes a breath. This is a new challenge and it takes a moment for the fog to lift from her brain. It is just a lion, she thinks. One who is injured and needs help. With that clear, she begins to consider how to bribe the animal.
A rabbit is her first option; it should be easy but then she ends up with a tug of war with a badger. While she wins in the end, she gets a claw down her cheek. At least the lion is pleased with her offering, even if it doesn't seem inclined to come close enough that she can see it up close.
