They were splitting. Of course they were. Why would they do anything ******** else? Rota took exception to being hit on by these insects, as flattering as it was(not). He decided that his target would be the beetle that wanted him so bad that it had passed through the newly reinforced defenses of Alyxandeyr. It was no worry to the Demon, as he thrust his sword in front of him to meet the beetle's path of entry. If all went well, it would be a very uncomfortable experience for the bug.

Alyx had been bested by these whelplings... He really needed to upgrade his blocking skill. This was getting embarrassing. He wasn't able to protect Rota from the trash in the dungeon. How was he going to be against an actual boss? The last thing he needed was to have a shield shatter in the middle of a boss fight. He was hardly able to defend himself, even... He shook his head and geared up for the next hit. With all things considered, though, he wasn't totally out of luck: this new shield was absorbing a lot more damage than his old one. So at least there was that. He kept an eye on the beetles, waiting for one of them to grow some balls.

Double Strike

With the advent of beetles, Rota was glad he had Double Strike in his arsenal. Not only did it seem to be their bane when combined with his sword, but it was quite the useful arte in general. He turned his attention to the third of the standard size beetles. Having been blocked by Alyx, its defenses would be weaker than normal, and it wasn't as if dealing with a legion of smaller beetles was a problem for them at this point. His blade flared black with intent to end this beetle as he slashed his blade vertically, the aura following very close behind.

Alyx had handily deflected the attack from the third beetle, and the force didn't so much as cause his arm to quiver. The new shield was working wonders. Though they were not the toughest of enemies, Alyx was confident that he would be able to get up to fighting weight soon. At least enough to shield himself so that he could work and get to the point that he could work as a functional again. It was getting sort of old, having to lament the fact that he was not enough of a warrior to handle mobs that were clearly below his level. Overall we should be able to mulch these things, and, while Rota could do that, Alyx was not even able to defend against them. If none of them attacked, then he'd still be able to look stylish.

Rota decided for one split deserved another. He turned to the last complete beetle left and his blade began to glow. He charged at his foe, ready to strike it down with all that he had and brandished his mighty sword, slashing at it with all the strength he could muster. The aura blade came close behind to deepen the cut as he thought about what to do about the mess he had just created for himself.

Rota utterly devastated one of the creatures, but it was still holding on to the last tenuous threads of its life force. Alyx stood there and looked pretty. That's why he got the big bucks: he looked good. But, really, what was there beyond that? He mostly just existed. He felt like he wasn't pushing his limits anymore. Like he'd hit a wall. Hopefully this push into the dungeon would reignite the flame that had seemed to have expired inside him. He wondered what was happening to him. He'd never had this level of ennui, even during mindless grinding. He'd always strived to push as deeply as possible into all recesses of the system, but he'd recently found himself settling for what he had. He shook his head and thrust Gloomshard into the wounded beetle, finishing the work that Rota had begun so that they could draw this farce to its ultimate and only possible conclusion.

While Rota(astoundingly) hadn't killed the beetle he was aiming for, he saw that Alyx had his back in that respect. Rota then instead turned his attention to one of the small beetles he had made. They weren't strong enough for his true might so he contented himself with slamming his sword on it as hard as possible and awaited the inevitable crunch.

Alyx cleaned up the last of the large beetles, and Rota dispatched the whelpling that had dared to strike the Gloomking. Together, they were a frightening team: an unbreakable defense and an unstoppable offense. They were a combination of the most disparate approaches to combat that the game had to offer, and they were <******** owning it. Alyx still envied Rota, though, in the overwhelming literal awesomeness of his combat style. He wanted to be that devastating again. It was not completely outside of his reach. But it might be inhibited by his current style. He was definitely specced into the ultimate defense route... Maybe if he had some way of... Not re-speccing, but of cross-training... That could work.

Alyx made sure to get out of Rota's way as the demon used that whirlwind attack of his, but not before he managed to get a decent hack at one of the minor beetles. Well, 'decent' was arguable. His attack, even at his full power (without artes, of course), was almost half the power of Rota's spin. That guy was something else. It was incredible what he could accomplish with that sword. Alyx remembered the feeling of a greatsword in his hand, but it felt distant, and somehow wrong. He wondered why nostalgia had robbed that feeling of its rose tint. Maybe he was just thirsty for a new type of power. He'd have to look into that. Until then... Hack. Hack, hack, hack. Like it's his job or something.

For one good Spin deserved another. His blade maintained its blackened aura as he continued the momentumt of the last strike. He continued pivoting on his left heel as he stepped forward yet again to strike at all the beetles. With how strong he was, he wouldn't be surprised if they all fell during this strike, but he wasn't going to get his hopes up. And then there was one. Alyx' thrust ended the life of one of the beetles, and Rota's spin ended another, while utterly devastating the last surviving beetle. The remaining beetle was hanging on by the slimmest thread, and Alyx switched into defensive mode to allow Rota the privilege of finishing it off. Lifting his shield, he watched the beetle carefully to see if it was going to make one final rally to try and defend its honor and life, but he sort of doubted that it was going to try anything, and, if it did, he was tentatively confident that he could defend against it. He had to be getting some experience in his shieldwork, if only by dint of constant failures to succeed. If anything was true in this game --and he'd confirmed this by getting to level thirteen while fighting level one and two mobs-- it was that if you beat your head against a wall long enough, you'd eventually get a harder head. He was confident that he'd be able to take his skills to the next level --literally, with any luck-- and maybe even pick up some sort of ability that could enhance his tankability. He pretty much decided that his desires to retrain a new weapon were probably not the best course of action, and that he might explore his skills with the OHSS a little more deeply to try and master a way to bring himself up to an acceptable form of combat when he had the luxury of not needing his shield. Maybe he would switch to his light armor more often, and explore the freedoms that those options allowed him. Of course, he didn't expect to be incredibly good at it, but it might give him valuable experience in case he died, or found some way to feasibly cross or re-train. It would be a shame to lose a legendary weapon, if it came to that, but there was no sense in pursuing a path that was not going to give him the things that he needed to enjoy the game. Business and responsibility were one thing, but if he got down to the absolute facts, tanking was not a necessary function at this juncture. Also, he didn't want to sacrifice the things he'd gained. He had a host of artes for the OHSS. He had a legendary sword, and a mythical shield. He was one of the highest level characters in the game at this point, of that he had no doubt, and he might even be one of the top tanks in the entire Gloomwood. Tanks would very likely come in handy in the future, and he had found a strong and reliable companion in Rota. If he nurtured this character, he could possibly be of use in the future, and for a long while at that. If he ever died, he might consider a new type of playstyle, using the things that he'd learned to experiment with a whole new concept. Or he might just create another tank, and try to work his way back up the ranks as he was able to. It wouldn't be easy, but it might be possible. And, if tanks were just not very important in this game, he might focus on dealing damage or supporting the other DPS fighters in an attempt to find a niche that served a quantifiable function in the battles to come. At any rate, he had no possible way of doing anything but sticking with his character, because, at level thirteen, it was impossible to earn enough experience to become adept at a whole new weapon. He would have to slaughter hundreds of monsters just to get up to a passable level of skill, and even longer to train up a new armor class and to build his evasion. All in all, he was happy with the persona that he had crafted, and he could probably stick with it for a long time, and, when it was finally time to retire the Gloomking, he might have a chance at creating a new legacy, and carving a new path through the world of ALICE Online. He remembered, finally, that he was supposed to be focusing on the battle, and shifted his shield on his arm in order to prepare for whatever bullshit tricks the last mini-beetle was going to throw at them.

Great Cut

After that last attack only one beetle remained. It was just how Rota liked it. He opted out of using his bread and butter for a move that had gone criminally underused by him. His blade was engulfed in black light for what would seem to be the last time in this battle. He stabbed forward with his sword, the blade laying horizontally in his grip as he awaited the crunch that his actions generally caused. He was ready to be done with this room. They had wasted enough time on this fight. There were things beyond this room that required his attention far more.

Rota had done it. Alyx just sort of stood there, overly cautious, as his only teammate destroyed the beetle that remained. Now they would wait. The only way to be sure that the monsters would not come back (if that was even possible in this dungeon, which there was no real evidence of) was to give them time. Of course, if it was possible, it seemed to be less likely than it was in the Gloomwood. Or they'd gotten terribly lucky. Alyx wasn't entirely sure that anything about this trip was 'lucky', so he was almost willing to bet that there were surprises in store for them that they couldn't possibly expect. That said, it was that same hope for new content that drove them forward. Discovery. Excitement. Legendary status. They were quite possibly the only people that had ever gotten this powerful, if Alyx' scanning of the forums was anything to go by. That said, this was an extremely closed beta. It may just be that there aren't enough people playing, or that they just aren't playing as much as Rota and Alyx. Either way, if things went their way, they'd be the first players to ever clear a floor, (if, in fact, they weren't the first players to ever kill a boss, which Alyx was not sure on, since the alternate dungeon boss was designed to be repeatable, unlike the main dungeon boss), and that achievement would be carved in stone for as long as they lived. That was the real goal here; Alyx didn't need to be going back and forth between fighting styles when he could be focusing on what he really needed to do to advance and secure the future of his guild and his team. He closed his eyes and breathed, assured that he was on the right path, despite everything. He was going to be fine. All he had to do was stick to his plan, and everything would work out.

And then there were no more Beetles. Rota had slain most of them as per usual, but he in NO WAY trusted these things not to rise up as even more monstrous entities. He stood battle ready to take on whatever would result of this. While he felt he was a little too worn out to use Spin, he could still use some of his other techniques. The demon still had options to blaze his path.
