The shopkeeper smiled and waved at Miyuki, but as she didn't seem to be seeking his attention, he continued his conversation with Jess.

River heard Miyuki's footsteps, and she glanced up from her browsing. She grinned and meandered over to her friend, sidling quietly up beside her.

"Good morning," she murmured, keeping her voice down. "Lovely day, eh?"

The woman smiled softly at Lin. "Perhaps we should begin by finding somewhere comfortable to sit," she suggested. "The booths are meant for an individual or couple, and there are no more chairs by my desk. There is a smaller room, just there" -she pointed off at a doorway between two of the bookcases- "and it's meant for children, so it is far more comfortable."

"You're certain you don't need to be at the door?" Earendil asked, concerned.

Amanya shook her head. "I will hear, and people rarely come here."

"Very," Miyuki nodded as she turned her head slightly to talk to River, "And how have you and Jess been doing?"

Fair enough question seeing as they weren't all housed in the same place this time around. While it was common for them to go their own way, it was even more so now.

Lin nodded at this, if Amanya figured it wouldn't be difficult for her to be away from the front, then they could go to the smaller room.

"Alright then," Lin nodded.

They had time after all.

"Lead the way."

River grinned. "Great. Uncle Luk took us all out yesterday to see the memorial he built for our great-grandparents. He made it himself, it's pretty impressive. And Father's letting Jess and I go off more on our own, I think he's starting to trust us more."

She giggled at that. "He's so silly sometimes."

Then she became more serious again, and beamed at Miyuki. "And what have you been up to?"

Amanya took them towards the smaller room, her steps casual and comfortable.

"Now, you were asking about where to begin," she murmured, taking them into the room. "I would suggest the beginning - but the beginning of Arkandia? Or of Caras Galadhon?"

The room was a story room for children, and as such, there was a large chair for the storyteller to sit in and several cushions and pillows for the children, as well as a large circular rug in the middle of the floor. There were shorter bookshelves around the walls in here, with smaller, thinner books. There were small windows all around the outside wall in here, many of them; and there was plenty of light.

Miyuki agreed with that comment about River's father. After all, why wouldn't one trust River and Jess?

"I've been looking through the shops on my own, I just came from the jewelers. I came here also because I was thinking of getting a bag for an experimental project."

Miyuki had given it a lot of thought when she was looking for the shop. It amazed her how something simple quickly became complicated because she wanted to know if she could do particular things.

Now that one, Lin didn't have to think too hard on.

"The beginning of Arkandia," Lin replied with a firm nod as if to reaffirm with herself.

She was sure in there was the story about all the elven races.

River's eyes gleamed. "You came to the right place," she confided to Miyuki. "Jess is learning about the method they use here to treat the leather to get it the way they do. He says it's very high quality. Not as soft as the leather in Amon Darthir, but still very high quality. And they're more complicated, too. I mean, they've got pockets and stuff, and there are different styles - so different from anywhere else we've been!"

Her expression turned curious. "What kind of experiments are you going to do?"

Amanya sat in the chair as if it were her own (which it probably was), and Earendil began to arrange the cushions and pillows so that he and Lin could sit together comfortably while they listened.

The scholar did not wait for Earendil to finish getting comfortable before she began. She turned her eyes towards the windows, and a far-off look came over her face, as if she were losing herself in thought.

"Arkandia is an ancient continent," she began, "though your own continent is older. The elves were first created there, and then, a while later, they were created here. So while we are essentially the same creatures as you - well, Earendil least - we do not have the same ancestors."

Earendil was surprised, both that she knew about the Four Lands - and quite well it seemed - but also by the difference between the elves here and the elves of the Four Lands.

"Are there other differences?" he couldn't help but ask.

Amanya smiled faintly. "Some. Eru learned from his experiences, and there are a few differences."

"A variation on the rune bags, but I need a bag with plently of pockets both inside and out," Miyuki replied, "I was also thinking of seeing if there are any runes for locking or for security I could add. When my family travels our whole lives are pretty much in those bags. If anything happens to them, or if someone steals something from them, that could be a bit of a problem out on the road... and well... you were there when that sand stormed hit. The amount of water and sand that were in our bags afterwards was huge... they needed to be better sealed..."

Great... now she was really making this more complicated than she needed to be. However, the idea of living out of one's bag really appealed to her, but that would mean special equipment too to really live out of one. Like maybe a runed tent... but what would you do with a tent, and how could you make it easier to store and use one?

Lin was less surprised by this, especially when she heard that the elves here would created after. She recalled someone (maybe it was Aragost) who told her that stories of the past often were considered legend as time passed, maybe stories here hadn't passed that far. That whatever they were taught by their creators still stayed with them, including knowledge of another place.

"The knowledge of the Four Lands, that was from Eru?" she asked just to clarify, "The first elves created here were told about the other continent that is."

River nodded. She remembered the sand storm well. She had lost quite a bit in it as well, though she had found much of it back. Damaged, but back. She was most grateful that she'd found her bag back. It was the one that had been a gift from Jess, and it meant a lot to her.

"Well, they've got quite the selection here," she smiled. "Come, shall we take a look?"

Amanya pursed her lips, then shook her head.

"He told us some, yes," she replied softly, "but we also have some knowledge from those who have visited there. The visits have been few, but we make a point of learning about other nations. Most have returned, though there are a few that stayed. Some simply vanished, and we do not know what happened to them."

"Let's" Miyuki nodded eagerly.

Though she probably wouldn't be able to buy anything on the same day. She would have to discuss with her parents. Really, she wished she had a way to earn her own way so she didn't have to keep bothering her parents. She had skills yes, but they were all magical based and she didn't know if that was marketable. Though she was sure her Gaian family would say it was.

She didn't have anything to trade and to trade you required a money base first to get the goods to even trade in. Not to mention she was even more aware now about the supply and demand of goods than she was before.

She would have to ponder on this.

Now that Lin didn't know, but there were only two elven races.

"Out of curiousity and this is getting a bit off topic, but was it just Light or Dark elves that visited or were there other races?"

She didn't know why she wanted to know, maybe because she was just curious.

River linked her arm with Miyuki's and strolled over to the bag section with her. As she'd promised, there were all kinds of bags: shoulder bags, handbags, rucksacks, slings and more.

Amanya blinked at Lin. "Those who visited needed to blend with those they intended to study," she replied softly. "Light Elves visited Light Elves; Dark Elves visited Dark Elves; and Humans visited Humans. Our intention was to learn and remain undetected. Our only wish here is to be left alone, to live our lives in peace. We are content to remain separate from the other continents, just as we are separate from the other countries here in Arkandia."

"There's a lot...." Miyuki looked thoughtful.

She would like something big, she knew that for certain, not because it had to hold a lot of things, but it had to have enough area space for a lot of pockets, and pockets of different sizes. She also hoped for a pocket inside of a bag.

Slowly unlinking her arm for River's she took what looked like a backpack and checked out the pockets and the insides, seeing if the insides had their own compartments as well.

That made sense, it seemed like truly no one traveled unless they had to. Though she had to feel kind of sorry for the humans who had to travel to the Human Southland. Maybe it was because she was an angel instead of a human, but the Human Southland was harsh.

"Okay, I was just wondering, when was the last time someone visited."

Again it was just curiousity, she didn't know why she was asking. Maybe because she talked about the Light and Dark Elves as if they were still separate.

With Miyuki looking at the bags, River headed over to stand with Jess. Most of the conversation was so technical that it went over her head, but she was interested in listening anyways.

Amanya smiled and nodded slowly. "I cannot say for certain," she murmured, "but I believe it has been ... perhaps half a century since the last of our scouts returned. If you would like, I could check the archives for you for your next visit."

Earendil smiled. "We would appreciate that, if it's not too much work," he told the woman. "I think we are both curious to learn if we might know one of the people who were there."

Amanya nodded. "Then I shall do so. It is no trouble at all."

As Miyuki was going through the bags, she was beginning to feel like she would like a custom bag, but that would take planning and she had to know if she could get it right the first time.

She wondered if her experiment was a success if she could sell such a bag, since everyone else had runed bags. Pondering these thoughts she set the bags back and went over to River, wanting to know what would be the cost of such a thing.

If her ideas worked, that was the main thing.

Lin smiled at this, because if they had met someone who was from here, it would continue that on-going joke.

"Thank you," she replied, "and thank you answering those questions. I pulled us off topic, you said there were differences?"

Since there was a chance there was a difference between the Light and Dark elves in the Four Lands and the ones here.

River grinned at Miyuki when she joined her. "Find what you were looking for?" she asked. Then she noticed that Miyuki hadn't brought any bags with her. "Maybe not. Too bad."

Amanya smiled and nodded. "Yes. Differences. Well, to begin with ..." She turned to Earendil. "Immortal as you are, your people still fear one disease. Is this true?"

Earendil nodded. "One of three ways we can die."

Amanya spread her hands in front of her. "We are immune."

"I think I might for an experiment bag, but I need to talk to my parents about the price. I don't earn my own income... but I also wanted to talk about a custom piece in case my experiment works."

She thought, it would be far more useful, what she had in the mind. The only thing she didn't know was how the security runes would work. If she should create a trap or just a lock, how to prevent someone from just cutting the bag open and more importantly how to get the bag to unlock.

Somehow trapping the bag appealed to her.

Lin blinked, now that she didn't know. She knew there was one poison that could greatly affect elves, from a tree that looked like Gaia's willow tree, and of course elves could be killed, but she didn't know about the disease.

Not that they talked about illness before or anything.

River winked at Miyuki. "Shall I see if Uncle Luk can get Jess some leather to make you a bag?" she grinned. "I'm sure Jess wouldn't mind. He's been dying to try out some of the new methods he's learned on this trip. I can tell."

Hearing part of the conversation, Jess turned away from the shopkeeper, midsentence, and looked at River, a bemused expression on his face. "Are you volunteering me for things?" he asked her.

River beamed at him innocently. "Only things you want to do."

Amanya tilted her head slightly at Lin. "You seem surprised."

Earendil looked down at Lin. "Have you been told about the three ways elves can die?" he asked her curiously. "Elves of the Four Lands, I suppose I should say. Two methods for the elves here?"

He glanced up at Amanya, who nodded her agreement.
