Speak Softly came to halt when the large cat suddenly wove himself through her legs. She grinned; liking the feeling of its fur against her legs. The nudge to her chest made her giggle. Well gee, he must have gotten over his shyness of her now. “I like you too!” She told him, standing there for a good moment without a hint of comprehension. Then it sank in. “Are we going somewhere? Sounds good to me. Lead the way.” She trotted up behind him, ears flicked forward.

The kiokote on the rock looks down at Rouge with an odd expression on his face: something like delight that a little pink acha should suddenly appear, dancing on her hind hooves like pollen on the wind. Tipping his head at her, he asks, "Your people -- you like to have fun, do you not? Perhaps you can help me. I want to see just what you are made of -- dancing, singing?"

In time, there will be another contest arranged, as the kiokote and the acha put their heads together. Not an especially large member of his kind, the kiokote feels like a giant compared to the dainty acha -- even more so when her little sand dog appears.

Tossing his head, the kiokote tips his head back and roars, "The second event has now commenced! Will all participants who are ready to sing or dance -- to contest their talents against our new cousins, the Acha -- please approach the center rock!"

-*-

Beetleshell winces at the kiokote's loudness -- and then turns away in distaste, almost bumping into the blue buck. "Perhaps." The doe seems to consider for a moment, but then shrugs. "It would be good to listen. To hear the singing." And with that -- as if she momentarily forgets he exists -- she begins to approach the walk in her weird boneless way.

Maybe she too has partaken in some of the more exotic delights a kimeti can find -- the bugs, or the fermented juice that are so highly spoken of.

-*-

"You did, but -- only just." Stormbreaker shrugs down at Snow-Blind, wishing that there was more he could do. The poor buck's ego must be shattered into a thousand pieces; he knows his would be. Tossing his mane out of his eyes, he looks around at the gathering, and then notes -- with some satisfaction -- that nobody is watching them. They're all gathering around the main rock. "Maybe you ought to rest."

And then, because he can't help himself, "Do you know any kimeti with glowing markings like mine?"

User ImageUser Image"Windfurl, getoffher," the kiokote commanded through gritted teeth, he should just give up on that cheetah now, she was too much trouble. But... what was this?
Baby stared in bewilderment at the blue-eyed doe as she rattled off cheetah facts. Didn’t she realise that she had just been bowled over? Wasn’t she at least a little bit angry??
“Uhh... well, I don’t know the reason but I’ve only ever seen cheetahs run in short bursts, so I guess it could be true. Are... are you two alright?” he asked as he gently nudged the blue-eyed doe to an upright position then moved towards the black and white doe. “I'm so sorry, my pets aren't exactly the best behaved and I’m really really... OH MY GOSH, SILKSTEP!!!” The kiokote stared in horror as the black eaglehound picked up his pet. IT WAS GOING TO KILL HER. But a moment later, the eaglehound released the mongoose, and she skittered up Baby's back, hissing fearfully.
Momentarily stunned, the kiokote opened and closed his mouth a few times before finishing off his sentence. “I.. uh... oh yeah, I’m really really sorry! Awfully sorry. I just got Windfurl a few days ago and she--”
Never Grow Up spun around to face Blue Streak as the doe joined the rapidly growing group. She was saying something about fake crocodiles and lost cheetahs but too many things were happening at once and the kiokote’s mind went into overdrive. What was happening??User Image

"Oh, I'm certainly alright," Re-wind chirped, distractedly, to either or both, or no one in particular, circling the big cat now that she was on her hooves, "much more than alright, really, what a wonderful opportunity this is!" Curiously, she lowered her head to inspect the quick-stepping paws, "Oh, it is true then - did you know? A cheetah's claws are only semi-retractable. Except for the dewclaw, all the others can be seen at all times. This gives it better grip than most while running - but their pawpads aren't suitable for climbing trees. To run faster, or to climb trees - which would you choose? Which would I, I wonder? But I suppose cheetahs don't really have a choice, and neither do kimeti. Or kiokote!" she suddenly turned to the buck in excitement, "I've heard so much of your kind, is it true that - oh. Oh, are you alright?" He didn't look quite well.

Kisses had Had Enough of being a Good Boy, so when the race drew to a close and his beloved mistress bounded onto the sunny rock, he ditched her new friends and scampered over - and not a moment too soon for Kisses, for he could see the excitement in her had bubbled to a fever pitch: she'd reared almost entirely upright and begun her swaying steps; so did he, for he knew this dance well and joined it often.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Oh, why had they left some of their best singers and dancers back in the desert?! The things they could have shown them...but Rouge, she considered, was not too bad an example herself - singing and pure dancing were not her bosom sports, but (almost) every Acha could round these sports with the best of them, and if she could get her companions to join her, well - she didn't think they would lose, let's just say! Heady with the delights of the day, she shut her eyes and leaned into a familar routine of spins and steps - to the milling spectators, these moves might look rather alluring, hypnotic even, not knowing, as they didn't, that she dreamed the sprays of blood behind her shuttered lids in her customary dance with death; above the plain, her lilting voice soared, calling, calling:

"Come, my brothers, lend your strength and grace; come, my sisters, lend your voice and face - let us show what we Acha know -
Come, Debates, let your voice ring on the wind; come, Mirage, join your notes and swell the hymn
Come, Saguaro, come and warble to your fill; come, painted Ochre, lay your brush down now and trill
Come, Wayfinder, gift us all your elegance; come, Sunset's Longing -
oh, wait, never mind, I forgot you don't sing or dance, you strange Grumpy-rump.
Come to us, Float On, spark our hearts with fleet romance
And come - come, our cousins, from the plains or from the swamp -
will you, won't you, will you, won't you - will you join the dance?"

Mm, not her best, but it would have to do - surely one or two of her compatriots would hear her call, at least?

User Image The cat was pleased to see her begin to follow him. She must have some sense in her head then. He turned his head forward and slowly began to move through the mass. It was easier at his short height to see the shins and hooves of the many creatures but he wasn't relying on his eyes to find the red buck. He let his nose lead the way -- ignoring the curious new scents in favor of finding Travels first. It didn't take him long and he gave a mrow of success when he spotted the buck.

User Image A tight lipped smile spread against the buck's mouth as his cat, followed by the green doe, found him. He ducked his head as the cat twined about his front legs, head rubbing against his fur, as if looking for compliments. The buck, mouth still full with flowers, lowered his head and nudged the cat instead. A very silent "good job cat" passing between them.

User Image The doe climbed to her feet and for a moment she swore she was hallucinating. Oh sweet motherfather, not another chattering doe! She almost whined at that. No wonder she thought good deeds were cursed because this was proof that they were indeed. A chatterbox red doe who had no real sense only inane facts that wouldn't help at all, a chattering blue doe who was daft and really it was such a shame she didn't want to meet another crocodile (Lull sure wouldn't mind introducing her to the first or second one she found), and a kiokote who had no control of its pet. Oh damn.

User Image "Well it looks as though you've found some friends," Lull interrupted, "and no longer need me about." She put on a very sweet looking face and caught her hound's eye. A sharp shake of her head made the eaglehound stop its pleading to be allowed to eat the mongoose and she moved to the kimeti's side. "Have fun, don't get killed," she laughed all while hoping none of them would remember her or come looking. She gave a fake smile and then turned away, face instantly shifting into annoyance mingled with exhaustion. Perhaps she could find something to kick in the head -- on accident of course.

Breathing Spell stood still as the doe moved away. He watched her odd gait and then started after her. It could very well be good to listen to the singing. Besides she seemed quite unsteady and he would wonder if she was all right should he leave now. As long as she did not rush him, he thought it would be all right.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Albatross took the Games at a leisurely pace. After having missed the race, she and the white doe were suddenly surrounded by others at their pond. The ground thudded their arrival. The water near her created ripples in response, distorting her reflection. Curling her lip back, she inspected her teeth. Shiny and clean, still. Her eyes were bright, check. No eye gunk and her pelt was for the most part, clean. Nevermind her hair. As she waited, she lounged next to the white bird, watching the kimeti, kiokote and foreign acha. She created character profiles for each to cure her boredom, casually swatting the other doe with her tail, making sure she was still there.

A familiar, clear voice rang out. Singing? Dancing? Albatross was entranced with new things. She liked change. She watched the others, making mental wages on who'd join at the rock. Then a pink little thing, acha she reminded herself, starting to croon. Spunky little thing. Making up her mind, she rose with audible cricks in her bones. Turning, she demanded, "Hey, let's sing and dance! We can do it together"Yeah, it was probably best for all parties involved to pretend Albatross asked. The wind blew her hair her bangs back, exposing keenly interested eyes. She was already up and headbutting the other doe very softly in the ribs.

Bounce spared a moment to look around for his brother, and saw his bright green glow over by one of the kimethingies, obviously pumping him for information, or some Stormbreaker activity. Bounce takes a moment to wonder how Storm still had any energy to do that.

The kiokote was breathing heavily, but that didn't stop him from chattering. "Flaaaaare. Flaaaare. Hey, Flare, I'm pretty sure I beat you!" His tone just begged for a challenge, especially since he didn't even know what place he'd finished in. Wobbling to his feet he made his way over to his sister, and with a big grin, shook himself, sending mud flying everywhere.

Blue Streak blinked and bounced on her heels, making the foxbun yip and cling tighter. "You don't look so good was it something you ate or maybe it's all the action here I know big groups of people can be kind of scary and maybe you should sit down?" She might've been a blabbermouth, but Blue Streak was helpful -- she nudged the kiokote cautiously.

She turned her head slightly to stare at Re-wind, wide-eyed, at all the facts. "I'm glad you're okay and -- really?" It actually made her pause and think. "That's pretty neat and it does make sense for a cheetah since I guess there aren't so many trees out on the plains that they'd want to climb."

Then the other doe in the group turned to leave, and Blue Streak watched her go, looking bewildered. "Thanks for the well wishes!" she chirped brightly at Lull's back, apparently oblivious to the annoyance under the fake smile.

User Image If he had the energy, Snow-Blind would have killed this stupid little thing with the tact and subtlety of a loose boulder.

Without answering, Snow-Blind stood up- he was as graceful as a newborn foal- and finally spotting his companion lying on his back at the base of a nearby tree, stumbed awkwardly over.

"Hey." He said, nudging the Kimeti with one hoof, stumbling backwards with the effort. "Are you alive?"

He looked up, blurrily sighting the sudden cause of all his problems.
"I'm either alive, or in hell." Pieces moaned, not bothering to move aside from slowly blinking. "Are you alive?"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Oh - oh, wait!" Re-wind left the new object of her interest momentarily to catch up briefly with the leaving doe, "I just have to say: thank you so much, so very much. You saved me, and you've been so kind - I'll never forget you; I'll always look out for you!" She beamed with all sincerity - and it was true, her total recall did guarantee she would never forget her, and she would always look out for her. If there was any hint of horror on the part of the black-and-white doe at her promise, it would have fluttered over her head completely.

Off to one side, Stealjaw could only heave an eaglehound shrug-equivalent helplessly at his black-and-tan counterpart, as his clueless owner bowed her head earnestly before returning to the kiokote's side.

The grey kiokote, standing in what is now a throng of Acha, looks around -- surprised, at first, and then delighted. Leaning down to speak into Rouge's ear, he directs them: each Acha will have a brief bit of time to sing, dance, play or otherwise frolic as best they can. At the end, a winner will be judged!

Hearing that the Acha enjoy frivolity and are more than slightly hedonist, there is a cluster of nearly over-ripe, sweet berries for the winner. They are the best the swamp has to offer (on ten minutes' notice), and they sit in a glistening pile on top of two large leaves. It is one of the kiokote's job to keep the flies and small creatures away from them; already one enterprising owlcat and swarms of flies wait to eat them.

After everything is said and done, the grey kiokote yells, "First up in our contest of wits, artistry and charm is --" a pause, "What is your name again?"

"Red-stained Blossom!"

On the tails of that announcement, however, a kimeti with a wild mane of pale hair, so tangled that sticks and twigs jutted out from every direction, rose out of the crowd to ask -- and the grey kiokote smiled at her, beckoning her forward. "Come forward! Test your mettle! Sing together if you wish, or alone if you would prefer."

It was about time someone volunteered!

-*-

Stormbreaker stops in his tracks, looking surprised -- and then decides it's best not to pursue. He had no intention of causing harm, but this kimeti seemed to be .. touchy. Well, Stormbreaker reasoned, if he'd just gone flying across the swamp and landed in mud, he might be too. With a shrug, the black kiokote turns and lopes back to his siblings, expression quiet.

Just in time to get thoroughly sprayed with mud. "--was that-- ugh! Bounce!"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Rouge turned to look as the crowd fell away from the pale-haired kimeti - and it was like a bolt ran through her. By all the desert held dear - what a beauty! The pale hues of pink and blue that painted intricate patterns across her dusky pelt, drawing to an elegant point at her muzzle - how she longed to paint those swirls in red across the ground. And that shock of hair - were those...butterflies? A bird's nest?! How incongruous! How delightful! How...beguiling. And above all, those large, blue eyes. They shone, like liquid, like lightning - like a clear and present danger, and it made her feel so alive, for the hunt had finally come upon her.

Her swaying steps slowed to a golden-honey languor, awaiting the challenge with an ease that belied the thrill that pulsed through her veins as the swagger slipped into her movement. Forget the berries - this doe was the prize she eyed.
