Upon closer inspection, that green was absolutely gorgeous! It had been hard to see her across the sands with it being dark and in the middle of the night, but a small gasp escaped Melina as the little one neared, then sighed as she passed. Stay positive she murmured to herself, trying to keep her hopes up. The rest of the eggs didn't seem all that active - would they have to be assisted into hatching? She wasn't quite sure, but she hoped they would all hatch all right.

Atypical dragons weren't respected in the north - in fact, they were normally left to die. Ruatha, of course, had been home to the very first atypical dragon, a white named Ruth. Melina wondered why the folks in the north were so dead set against the atypicals. Ruth had been a perfectly wonderful dragon, by all reports, and Melina didn't see the problem with having more of them in the world.

Yep, there when the guiding light green. That left him pinning his increasingly fragile hopes on just three dragons, two of which hadn't even managed to break out of their shells yet... What if one of them was an atype and chose him but was so weak it then died? That, by all accounts, was worse than dying yourself. Feeling that perfect bond for just a moment and then losing it?... No, no he didn't want to think about it. He felt kind of sick actually, sick and vaguely faint. Heat of the sands and lack of sleep probably. Shaking his head Zerivon pinched the skin of his wrists in an attempt to rouse himself, fainting would be humiliating and if he fainted and then his dragon couldn't find him and died...

He was probably just being overly sensitive remembering the dark feeling the void egg had given him... Oh, and that was one of the two unhatched eggs, wasn't it? Uh-oh. It wouldn't choose him, right? What if it did? He'd suddenly find that he loved it and it him, wouldn't he? He'd find hidden depths that he adored beyond that bleakness. That was what happened with Impressions.

S'ren didn't seem too concerned about it, so E'lai was still left wondering just who this girl was and how they'd met. Given the 'friendly', perhaps she was a candidate who was simply very outgoing and had taken advantage of the opportunity to chat with a dragonrider? Plenty of candidates did that. Though, if he looked very closely, she did seem a bit familiar--was she one of the weyr's children, then? If so, that paired with how old she looked to be said this probably wasn't her first Hatching. Surely there were other 'weyrbrats' in the same position as the eggs hatched and the dragons Impressed.

Speaking of eggs hatching...four yet to go, and one of them the queen egg. He did hope the two smaller eggs that hadn't yet moved were simply atypicals unable to break through or move their shells as opposed to outright duds. Given they would be the last to attempt to 'help' to hatch, a true dud would put a sour taste on the end of the Hatching, and given it was already quite late at night, nobody was going to want to leave on that note.

Ruven watched the blue dragon travel across the sands with interest, impressed by its uniqueness. Whoever Impressed this monster would have quite a lot of work to look forward to. Judging by its size now, it might even stand a chance chasing crimsons when it matured. The browns of Trine Weyr had better look out – their brightly colored cousin would give them a run for their money. The redhead had not really felt much for the distant sea egg during the Touching, so he was pretty sure that the Hatchling was not His. Once again, he gave himself a mental pat on the back for being correct when Neptanth bonded with Saykiro.

The scattered stars egg broke open to reveal yet another green. Ruven was not surprised, really. Weren’t greens supposed to make up the majority of each weyr? She greeted her brother with an almost inaudible hum. How cute. Shortly afterwards the guiding light green headed (thankfully) towards the girl candidates. An Impression quickly followed. Ruven was somewhat surprised by how fast the Hatching was going by. It seemed like he had only arrived at the Sands a few minutes ago, but now half the eggs had been born.

That thought weighing heavily on his mind, Ruven turned his attention back to the rest of the clutch. The queen egg twitched, but showed no further signs of hatching. The rocky band egg continued to echo her movements. Clearly they were saving the best for last (excluding the atypical eggs). The best for last, the best for last. It was only fitting.

Honestly the hold bred boy was not sure which of the pair WAS that best. The luminous egg contained a coveted gold, but Ruven was pretty sure he could not Impress her. Besides, even if he could, the thought of riding a female dragon still scared him. The rocky band egg possessed a brilliant personality. It was possible that he (Ruven was going out on a limb here, since he figured dragon inside was a brown) could outshine his metallic sister.

Oh well. He would find out in due time. Even if he did not Impress, today definitely had turned out to be exciting.

As the two big eggs continued to move, the scattered stars green finally rose to her feet and set off towards the male candidates. When she reached them she sat down an inspected the group, her steady eyes seeming to take in all of them at once. She spent some moments there, but eventually got back to her feet and moved onward to look at the assembled female candidates in the same manner. After a thorough study of that group she twisted her head around to regard the four remaining eggs, two moving and two statue still. Raising her head she then met the eyes of her mother before turning her gaze around the sands to take in every human present, and then her eyes swept across every green, black, blue, crimson, brown, silver, bronze and gold dragon settled up on the perches.

Turning her head to female candidates once more at last the green's calm eyes fixed on one single individual, the one that was to be Hers.

"Melina. I am Galith. We are one, from now until time ends."

And with that there were no more dragons on the sand, even the luminous egg and rocky band egg stilled as Galith found her rider. Was this a sign that something was wrong, or merely a moment of calm before another storm of activity? As ever with hatchings, only time would tell.

Melina hadn't much been watching the green that hadn't left her egg yet. Finally, movement caught her eye and she saw the little green heading over to the male candidates. Trying to repress the sigh that wanted to come yet again, she stopped watching the green for a while. She had rather liked that one as an egg - it had made her think about the wide expanse of the universe. All of the dragons here seemed to have celestial patterns, and it made her sore to think that she wouldn't Impress at this Hatching. After all, there was the queen, and then a few big eggs left. None of them would be for her, after all.

The little green came back around towards the females, and Melina didn't even hold her breath. She had just about convinced herself that this time wasn't for her. She'd simply have to try again. Her thoughts seemed to be backed up by the fact that the green, a bit larger than some of the other greens she had seen tonight, seemed to look past them, and took another look at the boys and all the other candidates. No......not distracted.....analyzing. Melina perked up slightly - the green was simply taking everything in. And by everything...Melina didn't think a single detail had been missed by the hatchling. That tiny spark of hope that refused to be doused started flaring into a flame, and just about that time......

Melina. I am Galith. We are one, from now until time ends

Melina stumbled forward, almost in shock, heading towards the seated hatchling that looked so dignified and wonderful. ...Mine? Melina thought at the green, shocked but extraordinarily happy. Oh Galith, you're wonderful! she thought at her dragon, stroking her elegant green's little neck. Galith said nothing, but radiated her pleasure along with a decent amount of hunger. Yes, let's get you fed, of course! Melina said, walking by her lifemate towards the stands where the meat was waiting for them. She couldn't just see Galith at her side, she could feel her. Oh, it was such a wonderful feeling! Galith didn't seem all that chatty, and Melina could appreciate that.

She was trying to hurry over to the stands, but Galith was moving more slowly, taking her time, watching everything, so Melina had to slow her single-minded pace to stay with her dragon. She at first felt a slight bit of annoyance, but replaced it quickly. Maybe she did need to slow down for a bit. She wondered vaguely what Galith was thinking, and after a short pause, images began showing themselves to Melina, startling her so badly she tripped a bit on the hem of her robe, though she caught herself. After her initial surprise, she was able to enjoy not just the images, but the sense of things that Galith was sending her. It was entirely detached - no sense of favoritism, or influence, just simply how things were.

It was with a broad smile on her face that Melina - no, Lina, fed Galith her first pieces of meat on the sidelines.

Friendly was certainly one way of putting it. However, despite the many candidates he'd made conversation with over the Turns, he couldn't quite say that any had previously sought out him and Tereth at their weyr simply for the sake of conversation. That... was entirely new and unique. And refreshingly bold in a small way, considering how few Candidates took the initiative to speak to riders period. He could see why Tereth found her so intriguing.

"I suppose the new queen likes to make an entrance," S'ren remarked, noting how the two wiggling eggs had stilled. Giving pause at such a time as this pretty much guaranteed that all eyes would be on those two eggs. Question was, was the second egg a bronze or a brown?
PostPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 6:07 pm

Lena watched the curious behavior of the scattered stars green with careful observation of her own. The green didn't seem to be confused or worried, simply wanting to get a good look at everyone around. No need to investigate individuals it seemed, for she sat on the outside of the candidate lines, but it was still undeniable "investigation" was apparently her aim. The female candidate stumbling forward at the green's next gaze into the girls made it clear another had Impressed.

Lena's eyes flitted back to the eggs; queen and companion-egg (bronze or brown?) now stilled. That didn't seem to be a good sign, but perhaps they were readying a final explosive push? Sooner would be better; not just for the candidates those two would inevitably choose, but for the two eggs who'd yet to move and would likely need aid. Things were already dicey enough with atypical survival, and every second certainly counted.

At first, she hadn't noticed the luminous egg begin to crack, not being close enough, but now it was impossible to miss. Very soon now, Trine's new gold would hatch - but what was she waiting for? Was she going to let the rocky band egg hatch first, so that she could have the Sands to herself? Like most others observing, Nawa had begun to suspect that the void and burning eggs weren't going to hatch on their own. Four dragons left, one certain not to want her if its size was any indication, and so many Candidates. The girl was caught between hoping one might be hers, and knowing how unlikely that was.

Nawa took a deep breath and waited.

Again, the golden egg and the egg next to it rocked and cracked a little more. But still nothing! Narisa felt a little bit of anxiety over the continued unhatching that was occurring with those two eggs. And then there were the two smaller eggs, one of which was the smallest she remembered from the Touching. The one that had been farthest from the main grouping. Neither of them had so much as twitched! What did that mean? Where they even going to hatch? So many questions she seemed to have and hardly any answers. It must all be a learning experience. None of the riders seemed overly concerned. And the clutching Queen herself seems fine with the events. So maybe this wasn't unusual behavior of the hatchlings after all? The vintner sighed a little.

Another of the greens came their way and once again that little flutter in her stomach kicked up a notch when she approached. And again it was distinguished like the previous times. Narisa was having a much harder time keeping her thoughts off any self-doubt that maybe she just wasn't good enough or the right type of material to be a rider. Foolish thoughts, really. But the auburn haired girl was notorious for doubting in her abilities.

The last of the hatchlings currently on the sands headed towards the boys and she couldn't help the slight slump in her shoulders. Just as quickly, she forced herself back into that confident posture, even if she didn't fully believe it anymore. That ugly thing known as hope ignited yet again as the green didn't find Hers among the boys and instead came towards the dwindling group of girls. Narisa tried not to get too excited about this, but it was almost impossible not to. And much like all the other times, she was once again shown she wasn't the right one. Watching the new pair, her blue gaze traveled over to the gold egg and it's eggmate. The two seemed to still as the last green Impressed. A wave of doubt ran through her. Was it over? It couldn't be over. There were still four eggs! The golden egg being one of them! She watched on in anticipation, wondering when they would hatch. And if the other two smaller eggs would hatch as well.

Kallista watched with pride as several more good sized greens were hatched. She heard whispers about how many were coming but honestly from all the clutches she had been to greens made up almost half the numbers. But now there were four eggs just shaking and then stopping. Was this to be a big finale? She kept her fingers crossed that one of the eggs was for Allaxon.

It is good there are so many greens None like myself of course. As long as they remember that when I am in the skies. Astarteth snorted.

V'tur sighed as the little ones began to make their Impressions. With this much attitude and presence, he wasn't sure how they would get along in a wing. Hopefully, each one knew where his or her place would be. Settling back and crossing his arms, he wanted to see any more eggs would hatch on their own. It would not be a good sign if the little gold would need help.

He didn't notice Xan until she said something about the atypes and duds. Giving her a smile, he replied to her comments. "I hope not with a gold egg. I think they are all waiting to surprise us at once. At least they all seem keen on Impressing.

Iwieth warbled to some of the dragons near him and let the humming die. The brown hoped that there would be more of his color joining the ranks but said nothing to his rider or the others. Big blue that hatched. It is good there are none between. Yet.
``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
N'ymi was hoping the rest of the eggs would hatch and Impress soon. It seemed like it didn't take Daroth long to find her. In fact, she was one of the first to Impress from their Hatching. "Big blue ther' ta hatch. Yer such a sweetie ta me."
I was and still am. Guess that weed worked after all. Daroth thrummed.
Okay make that two dragons, one of which had left him feeling totally depressed and one of which had all but burned him with its intensity... So, how about another gigantic blue, hu? That would be nice just about now. Probably not possible, that egg was either a very large brown or a bronze according to the bets he'd heard experienced riders making. Well, maybe it was too small for its egg? Maybe it would hatch big but grow to a normal size? Maybe this just wasn't his time, he could stand again after all... He understood now why people got sucked into standing again and again until they were too old. Nobody wanted to be the one that was left standing, that was never chosen to be the one by a dragon.
'Elizamine! Our friends are waiting for us by the food' Velath trilled, giving a happy little bounce and increasing her pace towards the food tables where her sister sat waiting with excitedly fanning wings. She had not met Halith's chosen yet - or any of the already impressed who gathered near the food table for that matter and she was certainly interested in correcting that matter. And getting something to eat too - yes something to eat would be good she decided as her eyes whirled with a tinge of red.
"Of course they are" Eliza told the little green, picking up her own pace so that she could keep step with the dragon as they headed for the food. Still beaming happily she glanced towards the food tables where Ceta and her dragon waited, it looked like Ceta's dragon was indeed waiting anxiously for them to arrive. Eliza couldn't wait - she had no idea how she was going to sleep tonight after the hatching and all this excitement - she wanted to stay up all night discussing the future with Ceta now that they had impressed together, of course such thoughts were pushed to the back of her mind as her stomach practically rumbled with Velath's hunger reminding Eliza that for the moment there were more important things to take care of then chatter.
Upon reaching the tables she hurriedly grabbed a bowl of the waiting meat and placed it in front of Velath whom had taken that time to sniff and nudge at Ceta and greet her green sister. "Can you believe it? This is perfect!" Eliza bubbled at Ceta "We both impressed together..now we'll both train together...maybe we'll even end up bunkmates for a while!"
'We came quickly' Velath was telling Halith earnestly in between bites of food 'But we were talking along the way - there is so much to see and talk about now that we are out of our shells, did you see all the big dragons up there watching us? I bet they and theirs have so many good stories to share!'
Kytara watched as Navarre left the sands, the gorgeous -if somewhat temperamental- blue trailing after him, a mix of pride and jealousy filling her chest. He was her brother, and she had known that he would impress and she was very glad that he had, but a not so tiny part of her could feel that sense of sick depression and defeat welling up again. She would leave the sands without a dragon, again. As the brilliant flash green moved to inspect her she held her breath hope starting to rise yet again before being dashed as she moved on to inspect the other girls.
It took all of her self-control to force back her tears as she continued to watch. It was painful, more-so than the first time even, but if she wasn't right for a dragon, she just wasn't right. She didn't begrudge any of the lucky young men and women who impressed. She focused all of her attention on being happy for them, trying to ignore the aching in her chest.
N'var, for that was who he was now, led Novath away with a bounce in his step that was hard to miss. He had impressed! And to a wonderful lovely blue! Suddenly he frowned, his steps falling short as the drew closer to the meat set out for the new pairs and turned back to face the candidates still on the sands. What is it? My sister. What about her? I want to see if she Impresses. No. When she impresses. She just has too. Can it wait? I hunger. And that fat lout Nebulath is gobbling all of the food. N'var sighed, struggling to tear his eyes away from the small girl that was his current worry. I suppose. He joined the other pairs, making a point to keep his distance from Nebulath and her rider. There was no need to start a repeat confrontation. He took a bowl and began to feed Novath, his attention still divided.
Mallan cringed a little inside, more dragons finding their soul mates and none even looked towards him yet again. He was tempted to push his way forwards a little but he also knew that IF his dragon was to hatch, it would find him no matter where he stood on the sands, so he fought with the urge to make himself more visible to the hatching dragons but his fists balled in his tension. He closed his eyes for a minute and took a deep breath, eyeing the other eggs, out of all of them he knew that one, the golden Luminous Egg, wasn't for him, and some of those eggs could be duds, or atypicals.. he wasn't sure if he was ready for that kind of responsibility but if it came to it, he would work damned hard to show he COULD do it. He opened his eyes and watched the remaining eggs, glancing towards where the Weyrleaders stood, on edge for the moment they would be called to gather around any unhatched eggs.
