"H-hopefully n-not anyone I w-would share any com-company with," Newt murmured, taking a bite of his sandwich as he tried to lull the baby in his arms back to sleep.

Crow shook her head slowly, staring hard at the sand.
"Nah, not unless you've met my parents. Not that they'd voluntarily share company with people like you an' me anyway. They have...refined taste." she said sourly, digging out a sandwich for herself and biting into it savagely.

Newt glanced up, suddenly thouroughly self concious about the state of his dress, the too-short sleeves of his faded and dirty coat, and the patches on his trousers. "Er... wh-what do you mean?" He cleared his throat, tugging the sleeves down towards his hands more.

Crow sighed heavily.
"I mean, they're selfish jerks that're like the stereotypical nobility. Where I'm from, people like me are....hmph. Accidents. Worthless. And my parents felt it was a moral obligation to let me know that every day of my life," she said with a trace of bitterness. Shrugging it off fast, she smiled at Newt apologetically.
"Enough about my tragic past," she said with a laugh. "What about you? Where d'you hail from?"

Newt's wied eyes darted over the odd girl, not quite understanding anything she was talking about. Royalty? The pit of his stomach dropped, and he suddenly felt even more self concious. "Er... ah... j-just... outside of D-durem... er... th-then inside D-durem... and now... er... here," he replied lamely, giving a weak, crooked-toothed smile.

Not noticing any of the effect she'd had on Newt, Crow listened attentively.
"Hey, cool! I like the city. I've been here....oh, 'bout a year. My brother an' a friend of mine live with me and Len. How about you? Got any family?"
She knew she was sounding nosy, but Crow was just honestly curious about Newt. She couldn't quite say why....maybe his shyness was just encouraging her to be sociable.

"I... ah..." Newt recoiled, hugging the little scarecrow baby to his chest, glad Cro had fallen asleep. "Y-yes, a bro-bruh-b-bruh-brother... um," He fidgeted, obviously uncomfortable recounting his life to a nearly perfect stranger.

Crow nodded slowly as Newt stuttered his answer, letting a brief silence spiral between them as no more information came.
"Ah, okay..." she said, finishing off her sandwich. "Well then."
Sensing the conversation was dying off fast, Crow glanced around as though half-hoping some mangy, blood dripping monstrosity would jump out and attack them. After all, fighting for their lives would make a better icebreaker than awkward conversation, Crow thought sensibly.
"Um... what's his name? My brother's Julian. You'd like him, maybe."

Newt leaned Cro against his legs, fiddling with the fluffy black hood-like mask on the baby's head, "Wh-what was your b-brother like?"

Crow's expression noticably softened, a small smile on her lips.
"He's....he's everything you'd want in a brother, I suppose. Always saving me from trouble. And he's a little cracked. Mostly my fault, 'cause of something else he had to save me from. He's been getting better now, though. Kinda quiet. You guys could get along, I think," she said, a note of fondness in her tone as she spoke of Julian.
"What about your brother? Is he like you?" she asked.

Newt listened intently as she spoke of her brother, but when the conversation swung back to spotlight on him, he fumbled. "Ah... er... y-yes and n-no... er... w-well y-yes b-but.. ah... W-we're t-twins. I m-mean... well, w-we l-look alike and.. b-but we aren't r-really.. er... you know... alike."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. Julian looks older, and he acts a whole lot older too, but he's actually younger than me," Crow said animatedly. "We're siblings, but we don't really look alike at all. I'm way too pale, an' he's like fifteen shades darker. People think we're datin' or something, not brother and sister."
Wrinkling her nose at the remembered accidental accusations of incest, Crow shook her head despairingly.
"Ucch, some people think the grossest things. Anyway. You're twins...that's cool. Identical twins always struck me as interesting for some reason. Like living reflections, something like that," she said, pondering.

Crow nodded slightly.
"He is," she said. "He's the only one in my family that ever cared what happened to me."
Trailing off into her own world for a moment, Crow thought about what she'd told Newt, staring out at the water Lenore was currently splashing in again. She snapped back to reality a few minutes later, realizing how long she'd let the silence spiral out.
"Oh! Well. Hmm."
Unsure what to say, she gestured aimlessly around.

Newt just smiled shyly, looking as though he were about to say something when the baby in his arms began crying frantically again, undoubtably demanding one of it's various basic needs. "Ah- ah, b-blast I sh-should... sh-should t-take him b-back and s-set him down for a n-nap..."
