Yea, the King egg was a Bronze alright, capital letter fully deserved; by the looks of it he wasn't even waiting for his rider. Still, good job that he knew what he wanted and had safely Impressed; even a high and mighty dragon was welcome in Ash's eyes right now if it was going to bond safely...
There were still quite a lot of eggs, and not too many male candidates. She wasn't male, of course, but if there was a dragon out there that was looking for a masculine mindset (maybe a green looking for protection, or a blue looking for a buddy), then she stood a better chance of Impressing now... Shards she felt bad for feeling slightly excited about that; it was only the case because so many boys had been too badly hurt to keep on standing. A lot of them were just kids, too. She hoped they didn't come to any permanent harm...
Yet, guilty as she felt, Ash couldn't help feeling a little bit hopeful. There was plenty she could do with her life if she never Impressed, and she had a good six turns more in which she could Impress, but it would be fantastic to be a rider.
The other half of your heart.
A soulmate who would never betray you.
Who wouldn't want that?...
Ah, the Sun and Sand had hatched into a brown; probably not her lucky day, and indeed the dragonet moved over to one of the male candidates. Ah well, still plenty of eggs to go. It could still very well be her day, and that was of course yet another male leaving the sands with his dragon. Prospects were good.

Connor honestly did't pay much attention to the brown when it hatched, after he'd deduced that it was indeed a brown..but then the impossible happened and all his planning and his long awaited bronze lifemate went completely out the window with the arrival of him.
Forget those bronzes, Connor. Feed your Lioth.
A brown...not a bronze. Connor's mind wheeled for a few moments at the ramifications of such a thing...but on the other hand..it wasn't a green (Dragon's forbid) or a blue either. Surely he was good enough to get where he was going riding a brown right? Of course he could..he was Connor..C'nor now he remembered. First brown weyrleader here he came!
Thats the spirit! Lioth cheered him as the two made their way to the feeding tables.

Iafri huddled close to Kalania, patting her hand. "With the hatchlings, yeah. They go between sometimes. But with everything else, this...this is worse than usual." She swallowed and wiped her eyes. "At least there aren't any whites..."
Enough people had been hurt already, the last thing they needed were dragonets adding to the count.

Now things were moving. At last a good run of Impressions with healthy if apparently headstrong dragonets and unhurt new Weyrlings. That was better. That was good, for the Weyr and the riders as a whole.
Vessali watched the new pairs head for the feeding tables with both relief and, yes, a tinge of disappointment, but there were still eggs and he hadn't been trampled, eaten or mauled. It still counted as a good day. Any day you lived through, wasn't that it? Leave it to a boy with a wherguard for a mother to have heard that line once or twice in his life.
He cracked his knuckles, squared his shoulders, and flashed the briefest hint of a smile at Jerishude, one of the other candidates he recognized by name. Gave him a little nod and went back to watching the eggs that remained.

For a clutch born in so much blood, it was certainly producing impressive results, with browns and bronzes emerging victorious from the chaos and death. Not so lucky though for the female candidates so far though.
This may change Tarth pointed out.
"True."
He hadn't even begun to really consider the problem of an 'honorific' version of his own name, there was too much going on, and to be honest he'd never thought about it seriously before now. He hadn't exactly been given a name that would easily shorten.

Tarth was right. Lady Luck had her eye out for the female candidates during the earlier madness and she had started to favor them some again.
Um... maybe.
The Green Stripe Egg fell forward forward. One leg kicked through the shell. One by one, the dragonet did this until all four feet were on the ground. The comical display of this new born blue brought much relief to rightfully stressed candidates.
Still mostly trapped, he fell -- and rolled -- into a couple of the girls, knocking them over. The legs kicked wildly and those close to the egg could hear the fussy baby inside complaining about his situation.

Up in the stands, X'nar gave a soft snort of amusement; daft little thing, cute perhaps but he wouldn't have wanted to Impress something that entered the world in such a manner. He wished there was more light though; he could do with a better view of the hatchling's (was it a blue?) attempts to break out of its shell. Just because he couldn't imagine wanting to bond to something so ridiculous didn't mean he didn't want to watch the proceedings; might lighten his mood a little...
His eyes kept wandering to the tunnelsnake. They should have done something about it. They should have known. Once all of this was over and people started analyzing what had happened, the White Guard was probably going to be widely considered inefficient and useless. He should have rushed the snake earlier or something, then at least he personally could have saved a bit of face, and maybe that would have made the others look better too. Still. Nothing to be done now. Watch the daft dragonet, and will all of the others to pop their shells quickly so that he could get that sharding drink.

While being silently amused that both the weird boys she knew had also impressed Mairin spotted something genuinely funny. Well sort of anyways, it probably wasn't funny for the dragonet that was trying to hatch but it was hard not to laugh at those little legs flailing about.
Curith wondered what had brought hers such mirth and risked raising her head to look. That's not funny she noted in what could very loosely be thought of as a reproachful tone. Though hunger had started to gnaw at the green again Curith watched her blue clutch-mate carefully, willing to run over and assist him if need be.
Sensing Curith's intentions Mairin tightened her grip on her bonded " Let it be Curith." He had to escape his shell on his own, it was the rules.

Everyone is watching him Lioth remarked in what could easily be considered a jealous tone and C'nor spared a glance for the awkwardly stuck little hatchling. 'it's just a blue Lioth, they just think it's cute' He told the brown hatchling before giving him another piece of meat.
I can be cuter, they should be looking at me Lioth demanded and without so much as a by your leave he snatched the meat from C'nor's hand "Hey! Watch the fingers!" C'nor scolded the dragonet..who completely ignored him and with a loud bugle paraded with the flopping piece of meat up and down the row beside the feeding table shaking it with vigor. 'Are they watching me mine? Are they? They are aren't they..they can't help it I know'

Well this was all well and good, dragonets hatching and not going out in style. They boy that Jerishude knew to be Adestu's partner got a bronze and some other boy got a brown. Good for them, it wasn't like Jerishude was in that big of a hurry to get a dragon. They were a lot of responsibility after all and he enjoyed relaxing.
But still he was amused by the actions out in the sands. Hopefully nothing went down that could result in him getting hurt.
Also, why was Vessali smiling at him? That was just creepy.

Losasath's head was heavy on V'tor's shoulder as the two continued to watch the Impression. All was going pretty well since Losasath's prediction of dire doom... there had been another loss, but dragonets were Hatching and Impressing as normal. There were still ten eggs, and the eleventh had a dragon half out of it, rumbling around on the sands like a silly wherry, knocking itself into a few girls. Someone might help it eventually, or maybe it would hit someone so hard the egg would split. Over at the feeding table a brown was acting up, apparently ignoring His in order to bounce around like a fool. well. That was completely inappropriate for the situation. That dragonet would learn to listen, though.
Gotta have faith.

The dragonet drew all his limbs back into the egg and rolled around until the shell gave way and broke. He lay there on his back, the candidates he had knocked down scattered all around him. Oh -- oh, alright, Kalania. Just go ahead and leave me here then. Don't worry a thing about it. Your Tochinath is just fine right. over. here. By myself. About to get stepped on. Don't worry -- really! While the blue ranted at his new rider, the Leaning Egg was doing more rolling around than leaning.

He hadn't intended to be creepy. He'd been trying to be friendly. Supportive. Of course, with someone of Jerishude's ilk, who know how the other boy would interpret most things? And Vessali's attention had moved on.
A crooked grin touched his face as the blue and his shell rolled about until it broke. Girls being toppled over by the dragonet were at least not being bled or terrified, so it seemed like more fun than horror, and that was welcome too. The handsome blue came out of his shell and more eggs were moving. Vessali shifted his weight back onto his heels to see what came next.

The doom and gloom of the hatching and the darkness of the night was no match for the dragon that came next. The top of the egg broke and the rest fell both sides.
Flicking her tail, the brightest green to be born on Pern joined the ranks of the hatched, glowing both in expression and almost literally.

If she'd been ten turns younger, Ash probably would have pouted an stamped her foot... Well, no actually, she would have humphed in what she hoped was a manly manner. As it was, she just gave a faint sigh and found a smile and a nod for the lucky new rider; when the egg had rolled over here she'd started thinking that this one would be the one...
Still, he wasn't, but one of the remaining eggs could be. Turning her focus back onto them, Ash did her best not to cloud her thoughts with too much longing. Here she was. She was alright on her own, she wouldn't break if no dragon came to her, but here she was waiting if one of them did want her. She'd be a good rider, she was sure she would, just the same as she'd be a good guard if she was still alone at thirty...
And here was another dragonet! What a bright thing she was; at least she'd never get lost on a foggy day; when she started getting proddy she'd be almost blinding!
