((Sorry, guys! My computer was acting retarded, and wouldn't let me post.))

Christoph waved at Byron and bid him good night. "I'll look forward to seeing you again when we do open."

Christoph looked sharply at Lacey when she asked if the place wanted a new look. He knew he hadn't spoken to her yet about the bar closing down. How did she know?

Maybe someone told her? The thought came, and seemed logical. Christoph decided to believe that was the case and relaxed before the girl noticed his quick change in attitude. He did wonder, though...

"If they ask, I tell them. Like I said earlier, though, they have to ask the right questions before I can answer them. I am connected to this place. Have to return every night as part of my contract." He smiled at her, then said, "If you ever need to talk to me, you'll always know where to find me at night. Now, I really should get started with cleaning up. I want to get home and get some rest before I have to start worrying about the redecorating."

It was partly a dismissal, couched in friendly words. Centuries of practice had made him adept at ending conversations without hurting any feelings or making anyone feel as if they'd been slighted in any way.

Lacey noticed the fleeting change in his attitude, but it was so quick that she thought it was a figment of her imagination. It was hard not to catch it since she was watching him the whole time. Even so, she didn't completely register what kind of change it was. She thought about it almost as long as it was visible, but not much more. Instead, she just listened to his response.

He kept saying that people had to ask the right questions and that he'd give the answers, but Christoph totally ignored one particular question. For some reason, it felt like he didn't want to answer instead of her not asking it right. Even though he is willing to tell her things, he might not be willing to truly open up. It wasn't like Lacey was trying to get to know him on a deep level though. Plus, she didn't really expect anyone to just tell her everything because she asked. That would be a bit odd.

Another thing about his whole if they ask he will tell thing, was the fact that he just flat out told her about the magic of this place. It's not like she asked for all that extra information. Of course, the rest of the odd random comments Christoph made earlier in the night was more to other people nearby; maybe that is what led her to believe that the place might be alive. In any case, he seemed to have a way with words; a way to say things that revealed only what he wanted and not anything terribly important or mean.

Need to talk huh? What was he trying to be a therapist? Ah well, it was good to know. Being a bartender, he probably heard a lot of interesting things so whatever she wanted to talk about would probably be to boring to even remember. After all, who knows what kinds of patrons he gets in here besides normal breathing human beings. A gentle smile appeared on her lips.

"I was planning on leaving anyway," Lacey responded after he finished. She felt like he was trying to get rid of her a little bit, but she wasn't going to ask anything else at the moment anyway. After all, the alcohol was definitely starting to kick in and she didn't want to turn into a big flirt like usual. That would be embarrassing and she liked this place. She felt embraced by the place. She felt comfortable: like she belonged.

"Thank you for keeping me company for most of the night," Lacey continued with a smile, "I had fun." Well, it might not of been most of the night but she did take up a bit of his time.

She turned around to look at the table where she left her friend at earlier. "Where is she?" Lacey asked herself as she scanned the room. That was when Melanie walked out of the bathroom. Lacey turned halfway around to look back at Christoph, "Bye for now." She gave him another one of her gentle smiles before meeting her friend in the middle.

Melanie noticed her friend looking for her when she left the restroom. "Ready to go?" Lacey gave her a simple smiling nod. She waved at the bartender, flashing a big smile, as they walked to the door.

After they walked outside, she led Lacey to her car. It was an old reliable truck, but she liked it just fine. Good enough for a college student. "So," she started to prod as they got into the vehicle, "did you guys have an interesting conversation?" Unfortunately, Lacey didn't really respond to her liking. It was one of those 'not really just the usual' type things. "Fine fine," she replied with a sigh. Melanie looked over at Lacey, who was now in the passenger seat, as she turned on her vehicle.

The dark haired girl looked happy and sober. After all, she didn't seem to get into her flirtatious mode while talking to the bartender. Melanie would have been able to tell when she walked by to go to the bathroom. At the same time, she thought that Lacey was on the road to that stage. After all, she was talking a lot more than normal. No matter how comfortable Christoph might have made her feel earlier that night, she probably wouldn't have been talking that much at the end if she was completely sober. She never opens up that fast. With a short laugh, followed by a look from Lacey, Melanie drove off into the night.

Christoph watched Lacey leave, then laughed to himself. That girl may look like her, but their personalities were extremely different. She was commanding, confident, and utterly unconcerned about speaking her mind while still seeming to remain mysterious. Lacey was quieter, more gentle, and seemed a little out of sorts sometimes. She wore her emotions on her sleeves and she was easy to figure out. It made for an endearing image, like an adorable pet puppy that trips as it runs to greet you.

He bid farewell to the last of the patrons, then surveyed the bar. Only his staff and the girls on stage were left, and both were busily cleaning up. Christoph left them to it and began gathering up empty glasses on a tray to take into the kitchen. Tonight had been an interesting night, he reflected. Now it was time to clean up and see what tomorrow would bring. Well, besides the Haunted Music Box's changes.

♥ ♠ Call me Byron, that's all ♦ ♣

The air was a little cold outside, and the stars looked shiny in the clear sky, it was such a perfect summer night as Byron strolled home from the "Haunted Music Box", he was feeling a little odd, he's been feeling that way for sometime now and he couldn't connect that feeling to any incident, but it was really weird.
As he turned around the corner he could see the two girls from the bar, the blonde was driving the truck and the brunette accompanied her, he wondered if they formed a band together or something. When the truck approached he smiled at them, he wasn't sure they saw him but he had a feeling he wanted to smile at them. The next turn he took led him to a narrower street, the wind gently blew his hair away from his face as he advanced in the street, he began to think about the events of the night, and what the golden haired bartender told the brunette who was standing next to him at the bar.
"So the place is alive, has a spirit of its own and Christoph seems bound to it, that's intriguing, but it seems less secret than they wanted it to be, I wonder if he was playing her, but I felt something there too, I wouldn't have believed it a bit otherwise." He thought as he reached his place.
Byron was the kind of guy who didn't believe in the supernatural but things were getting wonky since he came to this town, but he chose not to think about it, Until now...

((Sweet. Alykia PMed me with her ok as well.))

Christoph stretched and yawned, then stood up. He was in the Haunted Music Box, now almost completely done with its transformation. It had taken almost exactly two weeks for it to finally come up with something it liked.

He surveyed the bar appreciatively. Before, it had a sort of old-fashioned, western saloon style, complete with huge monsters of tables and a bar that could withstand gunfire and cowboys being thrown across it. Everything was done in dark colors except for the stage, the better to showcase the talent that graced it. The whole effect had been a bit gloomy in comparison with the bar's new look.

Now, the bar had a distinctly Oriental flare to it. The walls were covered with wide panels made out of thin, hollow reeds tied together with thin wire. Here and there, scrolls were hung, depicting copies of famous Oriental calligraphic works or paintings. Some plants stood along the wall or on little tables, adding color to the place. White hanging paper lanterns were everywhere, ranging in size, shape, and the length they hung from the ceiling. The floor was now made up of different shades of grey slate tiles, arranged in patterns inspired by Buddhist meditation labyrinths that were pleasing to look at. Small tables were scattered here and there, all with matching low benches. They were light and easy to move, yet sturdy. There were also some lounging chairs, one from which Christoph had just risen from, as well as couches along the walls.

He stepped behind the bar and got a glass of water. Before, the bar where patrons came and ordered drinks had been solid oak, stained to a dark hue, polished until it gleamed, and adorned with large, elegant carvings. The thing had stood like a fortress, buttressed by the small counter that nestled behind it and housed different glasses and common drink ingredients such as ice and lemons. Now, it was sleeker, made out of dark polished marble that was always cool to the touch. It was all flat planes softened by rounded edges, elegant in its simplicity.

Overall, the Haunted Music Box's interior felt more airy and spacious. Christoph decided he liked it and sipped at his water. The lanterns were his favorite. They gave the place a sort of party-like feel, as if there were always a festival going on.

He finished his water and took it to the kitchen, placing it in a tub of similar glasses that he'd used over the past two weeks. They weren't very dirty, having only been used for water, and it would make an easy job for his staff to come back to. Christoph began to whistle, feeling glad that he was finally able to open the place back up. Tomorrow, Elijah's band would be playing as the night's entertainment, and he'd get to see the reactions of his regulars at the new decor. He decided to leave, since it was one in the morning. He'd fulfilled his duty to return that night.

As he was exiting and locking the door, a flutter of movement from above him caught his attention. He looked up to spy a large butterfly resting just above the entrance, wings moving up and down in a lazy fashion. Christoph felt a pang in his heart as he recognized it for what it was. It was a message from her. He held up a hand towards the butterfly, which fluttered up into the air before landing on his hand and unfolding into a sheet of paper with elegant handwriting across it.

My dear Christoph,
I'll be visiting you tomorrow night at the Haunted Music Box. Things in Japan have become too quiet for me at the moment, so I thought I'd come see you for a change of pace and a bit of excitement. Besides, I want to see how you're doing. After all, you were quite a unique customer.
You'll have my usual when I get there, won't you?

He didn't need to look at the signature. Instead, he tossed the paper into the air. It folded into a butterfly again and fluttered off. Christoph rubbed his hand over his face and laughed ruefully. She was the same as ever. Now he had something to look forward to and dread at the same time.

It was early morning: the sun hasn't risen but the sky was a lighter shade of blue. Gavin was laying down on a hill that was in a nearby park. He was on his back with one hand resting on his stomach while the other was supporting his head like a pillow. The sweat jacket he had on was unzipped. The left side seemed to get pushed off his body because it was in a small puddle of fabric right next to him. Instead, his hand was relaxed on that side of his abdomen. A slight wind blew his hair; which was free from the hood that tended to hide it most of the time. It probably looked like he was sleeping. After all, his eyes were closed.

The past two weeks haven't been too eventful for him. He practiced with the band like normal. Tried to make some kind of effort with the bassist, although it didn't seem to make much of a difference. He never called Daniel. That wasn't surprising though. After all, he hardly ever does something like that. If he just gave his number to someone like Elijah; they would of hung out plenty of times already. Things between him and Elijah seemed back to normal ever since they had their little talk. Hopefully nothing will change that in the future.

Soon their band would be playing at the new and improved Music Box. Gavin never got nervous about such things, but he did wonder what the place looked like now. After all, it's been quite a while.

"So why haven't you called him?" Spoke an elegant male. His voice was velvety smooth and a little deep, nearly sour from casual discontent. Then again, Liam was always a bit sour for some reason or another. Few things seemed to make him happy aside from a good piece of music or free food. Or his dog, Wolfgang, a wolfhound-like, leggy, wire-haired creature.

Currently, Liam was walking Wolfgang - or Wolf as he generally called him - through one of the local parks. Beside him, a short blond man casually struggled to keep pace with his taller companion and his marble-colored canine. Although it was early in the morning - not even two yet - both of them were variably wide awake, except for when a yawn occasional broke past Daniel's soft facade. He wore a dark blue puffy vest and a green long-sleeved shirt over a pair of jeans. Liam had opted for a leather coat, a soft violet tee and dark black cargo pants.

Daniel's face was lightly red and he was suddenly glad that the park was still dark. He was also wheeling his bicycle along with him, so at least he had that to concentrate on other than his... uncertain feelings. Liam had been his teacher for a short while, and since the man had quit, the two of them had grown into friends; Daniel stayed at Liam's apartment for a few days at a time when he wasn't at his mother's. "...I've been busy with exams. Midterms are coming up and, uhm, I thought maybe he might have school t-too. So I... Didn't want to bother him..."

Liam snorted inelegantly, scratching Wolf's ears as the hound-wolf-mix butted into his thigh. Slanting a dissatisfied glance at the young musician, he let Wolf off the leash to investigate a nearby clearing. The dog was trained well, so he wasn't afraid to let the beast go off on its own, within eyesight. "So basically you pulled the shy act and pretended to be busy. Jeez, Danny, how is it you have any friends, let alone a boyfriend?" Liam retorted sarcastically.

Coming to a halt as Liam found a bench to sit and watch Wolf from, Daniel frowned as he put down his bike's kickstand. "What about you, then? Mr. Social-Hermit pants..." Daniel muttered, brow furrowed, his wavy blond hair shining under the glow of a streetlamp. Sighing, he sat on the side-walk's edge. "It's not like... he'll look at me... that way... I told you we were only -"

"- Frieeendsss. Yeah, I get it... Too bad. He's cute. In that dark and brooding kinda way."Liam interjected, legs crossed, head reclined back on the bench-back. From behind him, he heard his past student sputter indignantly, likely taken aback by Liam's blunt admission. Rolling his startling amber eyes, the ex-teacher instead whistled to Wolf, whom continued rolling about for a second before barking happily at his master.

Christoph wandered back through the city, taking his time to reach his apartment. He was preoccupied with thoughts of her and her pending visit tomorrow. What would she say? Had she changed since their last meeting? He hoped not, but it had been well over six centuries since they last saw each other. She might be ageless, but she was bound to have changed her style, at least. She might have even cut those long, black locks.

Lost in his thoughts, he stopped paying attention to where he was going. When he finally looked up, he almost didn't stop walking before he crashed into a tree. Christoph placed a hand on the tree's trunk and sighed, inwardly chastising himself for being such a sappy fool. It wasn't like him at all. But she did that to him, bringing out sides of himself that often didn't see the light of day.

He looked around, trying to orient himself, but spotted Liam and Daniel instead. Wolfgang, Liam's dog, was romping around happily. Christoph started over, waving when he was closer to get their attention.

"Hey guys! Guess what? Redecorating's finished. The Haunted Music Box will be open tomorrow..." Christoph stopped, remembering what time it was. "Actually, since it's one in the morning, I guess it'll be open today. Sunset, as usual." He eyed the blonde teasingly. "Elijah's band is our entertainment, Daniel. You should come see."

He looked at the two young men, then asked, "What are you doing out here in the park this early? Daniel, don't you have classes or something? Shouldn't you be asleep?"

┌─────────────────────────────┐

Gavin opened one eye lazily when he heard a whistle followed by a bark. Why was anyone at the park at this time? Not that he actually knew what time it was. The wind blew the blades of grass up again his skin; making it tickle. He lifted his shirt a bit to scratch the side of his abdomen. Soon after that, he sat up while propping himself on his elbows. His blue gray eyes scanned the scenery around him. No one was nearby that he could see. After all, he wasn't near any paths and picked this spot because it was usually devoid of people.

He was relaxed just moments before, but now his quiet place was being disturbed. Gavin stood up to get a view of what was below him on the hill. That is when he thought he saw the dog. It was kind of dark still, but he was pretty sure he saw the outline of a dog. The owner seemed to be sitting on a bench. He didn't really recognize him and didn't she Daniel at all. In fact, it looked like it was just one guy that decided to take his dog for a walk.

Gavin let his hands hang by his side as his eyes traveled to look up at the sky. He could wait for them to leave or just walk back now. It didn't occur to him that the dog might have noticed him since he stood up. As he was in thought, he noticed a certain set of stars. He walked a bit down the hill to find a position that moved the tops of the trees out of the way. The trees weren't particularly close to where he was resting but they were blocking the view. A soft smile appeared on his face when he noticed what he was looking at. For the moment, he completely forgot about whoever was in the park with him.

That was when Gavin heard a thump nearby; followed by the rustling of tree leaves. He turned slightly to look at the person who was now walking away from the tree. He looked a bit familiar. The guy that ran into the tree was still lower down the hill when it happened, but closer than the other two.

Gavin made some incoherent sound when he heard the faint noise of the tree crasher talking to someone else. As he looked back at the two that were bathed in lamplight, he realized that Christoph was the one that ran into the tree. A soft chuckle escaped his lips. What was Christoph thinking about that made him run into a tree like that?

That was when it happened. The dog that was originally at the bottom, was now charging up the hill. It was probably the chuckle that got his attention. There was no way the people below would hear, but apparently the dog did. Gavin only had enough time to turn around to face the canine before it jumped on him. He fell to the ground, with the dog on top of him. A big wet tongue kept licking the drummers face as he attempted to get him to stop.

'Stupid mutt. I thought I taught him how to obey commands...' Liam thought to himself, glaring at his big dog as Wolf snuffled around a group of trees. Leaning forward, he wondered if he should call for Wolf again when a voice other than Daniel's reached his ears. Jerking, the slim flutist canted his head to the side, finding Christoph in a matter of seconds.

His mouth switched into a frown as his boss/friend/whatever approached, all smiles and usually joviality. Within a minute or two, Liam was relieved to hear that the Haunted Music Box was completed and likewise irritated that he hadn't been contacted sooner. It was like, no matter what he did or said, Christoph kept strictly drawn lines between them. They could act friendly and such, but Liam could tell that Christoph kept a part of himself... withdrawn.

Not that he was one to talk, but he was just antisocial. Not secretive like Christoph.
"Goody. Working around over-excited drunken people is exactly my idea of a fun time. Did you do it all... yourself?"

Daniel listened in as Liam replied to the newly arrived and excited bar owner. Frankly, he didn't understand why it seemed like his older friend was always somewhat annoyed with the cherubic Christoph. Then again, he hadn't really been paying attention to what had been going on between them either. Sighing quietly, he stiffened, face reddening, when Christoph mentioned Elijah's band. "...Um, yeah. I will. Uh... I'll be back..."

As Daniel scampered off, Liam realized that Wolf had disappeared from sight. The scoundrel. That was probably where Daniel was off to, acting like a coward again in the face of something close to his heart. Eyes dark, he stood, standing even with Christoph, shrugging. His long hair fell over his shoulders, free of any tie that evening. "Daniel had a night class today, and stayed late to finish a project. He's staying over and came on a walk with me. I'm too used to being up at work to sleep normal anymore..."

Like Liam had thought, Daniel had gone after Wolf to escape Christoph's critical gaze. Not that he was scared of the man, but those of eyes of his saw so much... It made him a little uneasy. Trooping over the hilly ground, he whistled quietly, hoping Wolf wouldn't come out and trample him in some eager jump. A happy whine drew him toward where Wolf was; pushing past a few bushes, he saw the immense wolf-like dog wagging his tail over top of someone.

Gasping, Daniel darted forward, apologies already coming off of his tongue. Grabbing Wolf's collar, he heaved back with all his weight behind it - the dog weighed almost as much as he did. Panting, Wolf now sitting, Daniel turned to the person, eyes widening a second later.
"G-Gavin?! What... Oh, I'm sorry! Um, are you okay? He's big, but he's friendly... maybe too friendly."

Is in sync with the natural vibe of your body
What is Music?
Music is an outlet, from the everyday
It can take away the pain you feel
Or add to the excitement of a new day

"Me? Do hard labor? Nah. I just supervised and gave my opinions. The Box did the rest." He watched Daniel disappear after the dog and laughed, finding the antics amusing. Then he turned his attention back to Liam and lowered his voice.

"I have... a bit of a favor to ask of you." He couldn't bring himself to meet the young man's gaze, so instead glanced at the path. "An old... uh... friend of mine is coming tonight for the re-opening. She comes from Japan and is pretty important. Could you help me make sure she feels welcome? You know, keep her company when I'm busy and all that? She likes good-looking young men and is a wonderful conversationalist, so it's not too much of a chore. You might even find you like her."

He felt Liam's gaze drilling a hole into him and chuckled nervously. "You're the first one to know about her coming. If you don't want to, I'll get one of the other staff members to take care of her. You were just my first pick." He didn't add that he felt Liam's steady presence would provide a sort of metaphorical wall for her battering ram of a personality to wear out against. She could be tricky, but it was in her nature to be so. Christoph also knew he was trying to avoid dealing with her as much as possible and felt slightly guilty about it, though not enough to stop asking Liam for help.

"Figured as much... That thing is kinda creepy, y'know. Like a bored mother wanting to fix up her daughter's house, every other day... Well, at least I'll never be bored of my work environment." Liam replied, smoothly ignoring Christoph's laughing voice for a minute. He idly wondered what theme the Box had chosen; he'd almost gotten used to the rustic Western scene, but something told him that he was in for a surprise.

His attention perked when the word 'favor' fell out of Christoph's mouth. Another feeling came over him: one that teetered between dooms day and finding Treasure Island. Basically, his gut was twisting like a ball of rattlesnakes, ready to either coil tighter or strike a venomous blow. "A woman? A Japanese lady...? Huh. From what I can tell, you've got something here you're not telling me. About her."

Liam fell silent, amber eyes cool and aglow in the early morning light. The news that Christoph had a lady friend as mysterious as he was... wasn't all that surprising. Why it was he was trying so hard to convince him to... keep the lady company... was beyond him. "But, hey, a man needs his secrets..." He finished, voice quieter than before, gaze turning away. First pick? More like his trusty, lucky, dependable whatever he was. He cleaned, he crowd controlled, he picked up drunks and gave them the boot, he did the dishes and stocked. Even filled in a few idle spots on the stage if he was coerced well enough...

Grumpy and oddly unhappy by this fixed sensation, Liam slid his hands into his coat pockets. The night was cool, but Christoph's words somehow made him cooler. "...I probably won't like her. But I don't like most people, so it won't be all that surprising. So... Sure. Whatever you need."
