Chris attached herself to James arm like a vice, Refusing to let go of him no matter what he did.
Hearing Emma speak to the girl Chris turned toward them, Confused.
"Why did she follow us?"

l i k e a f a m i l y l a u g h i n g l o u d ?  Cairndeer looked at the child, her face had dropped a little, looking disheartened. The doctor felt truly sorry, even through the illusion. It wasn't real, but had she really been that starved for companionship? She'd heard stories about William's visits, how he came once every few weeks week, but had never thought much of it - but now that he did, one day out of every fourteen or so? How had she survived.
The girl didn't say anything, but looked on as they stood there. She didn't try to approach any further, but wouldn't go back.o r a g a r d e n g a t e o p e n i n g t o

Remus sadly looked at the young faun. He didn't want to leave her, but he knew that they couldn't take her along. However, it just felt so wrong to leave her in such a state. The Imperator sighed and walked towards her. Remus knelt down so that he was at her level.
"You can't come with us, but you will see us again someday. I promise. Here, hold on to this for me."
The Imperator removed a shiny medal that was pinned to his sash. It was a golden eagle clutching lightning shaped arrows in its talons with laurels encircling it. Beneath it were the letters SPQR. He held it out to her and smiled warmly.

Spent my days with a woman unkind,
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going to california with an aching in my heart.
The little girl took the medal hesitantly. She'd never seen anything so completely wonderful in her entire life, let alone be able to hold it. She nodded, and vowed to keep it safe. Reaching her arms around the man, she gave Remus a quick hug (a rare occurrence in her life) and soon scampered off as they had advised, carrying the medal as gently as if it were a small child.
James found the moment sweet, certainly, but didn't show it. "A kind gesture, but that medal is going to be staying inside the Window forever, and not because she's keeping care of it."
Evros just waited patiently for the group to decide to move on, the river was literally less than a hundred feet away.Someone told me theres a girl out there

Remus felt a little bit better and rejoined the group. He was aware that he would likely never see the medal again. However this fact didn't bother him.
"I don't mind. I would give the Empire if it would bring Kaok back to me." he replied. Every word of it was true.

...I don't doubt that. James sighed, watching the human-half of Kaok, who was preoccupied watching the space that the little girl had just inhabited. But that won't get rid of his obstacles.
Evros led them all back into the river, and they returned pretty much the same way that they came, except that everything felt backwards. They fell up, and their air replenished as they returned back through the long cylinder of water and to the surface.Someone told me theres a girl out there

The nobles nodded in approval at Remus' actions, diving headlong into the river.
I'd do the same for you, you know.Emma whispered mentally as she took a breath after emerging from the other side of the Window.

The Imperator held his breath again and entered the water with everyone else. It was easier this time around, as he knew what to expect. He took a breath of air as his head surfaced on the other side.

The others all eventually surfaced, one after the other - Kaok's human half still last. After a few seconds passed, Evros returned to the console by the basin.
"Three possible places left. Do you think we should try the house then?" He asked Emma, who had said so before. It did seem more likely than a spaceship - which he'd known Fauns not to be fond of.Someone told me theres a girl out there

Emma nodded, wringing water out of her hair in a futile effort to tame the rat's nest it had become. Hrothbert was quiet (still not noticing he was soaking wet), keeping his opinions to himself. The sorcerer looked uneasy, most definitely not a good sign.

The Imperator simply nodded, just agreeing with what everyone else decided on. He didn't have any better ideas. He hoped they would find Kaok's faun half there, before they were forced to go into the dark room. Just thinking about the dark room gave Remus the shivers.

He pressed a few things, sending the forest image to the machine's archive and bringing up the image of the house again. It was pretty fancy, Evros thought. He wouldn't actually mind going there.

This time, both nobles were the first in, one directly after the other as they took a breath before the plunge. Emma had her hands on her cane, ready to draw the blade within.
She had to find her. She was getting closer. Was she? Was Kaok even still there for the finding, or was she too irrevocably split?

The sooner they found her the better.
But there was a thought she kept banishing,
"What if shes in that black room...?"

Remus followed suit and went in with all the others. The mission to to find Kaok was particularly strange to him. Though it seemed they were passing into other universes completely, they never really ever left the lab or Rome. The Imperator only dwelt on it for a short amount of time. He had to stay focused.
