The storm continued to bare down it's unbridled presence upon the mountain, as though Xenon's own actions had inspired it to greater heights, like a youth that had found someone to play with. Xenon understood now, he could control the jutsu, more, he was beginning to understand it's currents on the fundamental level. Already he knew this Jutsu was his, and that indeed, he was but a breath away from utter mastery, if indeed it was not already his. The Jutsu was indeed simple in principle, and to one experienced as he, it was no trouble. opened his golden eyes, the iris's of them alit from the iridescence of the lightning cascading all about him.

Xenon finished the attack with a final great burst, the force of the attack causinga final explosion of power as the lightning coursed in a final primal wave. The rock around him shattered, the crater into the mountain's face now complete as a few stray bolts coursed their way up into the sky, helped along the way by the already raging gale. Xenon stood slightly hunched over from where he'd hit the ground, the rain dripping off his soaked form. He gave a slight smile, his feet giving the faint sign of Chakra as he jumped easily out of the crater, landing at it's rim as he returned to the small ledge he'd began on, where his coat still rested, as soaked now as he was. Well...that was one down...

Xenon's eyes flashed in the light the dark clouds that gathered exclusively about the mountains peak, as though the lofty perch had been besieged by the heavens, and he along with it. He didn't feel any of the strain of this however, as the lightning struck down near him, its residual current merely seemed to mix with his own, which was now beginning to charge the very air around him. His chakra was focusing again, his eyes slowly closing as he concentrated once more. The essence of the storm, the essence of lightning, was difficult to truly grasp for many. They saw it for it's power, saw it for its destructive capability, but failed to actually see it for what it was. Lightning was direct. It flowed in a single current towards it's target, passing through whatever was in it's path. Some things it passed through easier then others, some things it caused more harm then others, but in a matter of scale, all things conducted lightning, and the more a thing resisted lightning, the greater harm the lightning tended to cause.

Xenon had reflected many times on how similar he and lightning were, how, indeed, he could think of no other element that suited him so.
In the cycle of elements, Lightning bridged to all it's fellows in some way, brought on by water stirring the sky, always drawn to earth wherever it would strike, and of course, it was the closest companion of fire, which often could be found dancing at it's base where it finally struck it's destination.
Xenon gave a slight grin. There was probably symbolism in there somewhere...yes he was certain, but he'd no time to indulge such things now. He had to concentrate...had to control his chakra more accurately then he ever had before. The Technique he was now attempting to master was a devastating and powerful technique. So much so it seemed almost to surpass what could be called such. It was a mass of electrical energy, a cloud of raw volatile wrath shaped into the facade of a dragon. It was one of the most powerful Raiton Jutsu in existence, and a weapon to be used against the strongest, most resilient foes... and he WOULD master it.

Xenon's past year had been spent...as though asleep. He had actually slowed down for the first time in a long time, without even realizing that he was doing so. He'd actually just kicked back and relaxed, despite Mokutan's insistence that he was as pure and shameless workaholic. He'd gotten stronger, and still at rate that most would have found unnatural, but it had been no where near as amazing as he rate of growth the previous year, when he'd gone on his journey. In fact he was positive the only thing which had pushed him at all during that time was the chuunin exams he'd taken at the end of the year, and of course, his ever insistent team mate. He'd slowed down and merely...savored his life...more then he had before, taking in a studying, reflecting...contemplating. He'd been gathering strength of a different kind...
And Xenon Maboroshi, though he wouldn't openly admit it, had known the cause for this period...had known it's nature. It was not some shift in his personality or goals...
It was the calm before the storm.

The Lightning flashed as the air about Xenon himself seem to be aglow with crackling volts. The calm before what storm? Even Xenon wasn't sure he knew the answer to that question. No...that wasn't entirely true.
He could feel it on some level, less then a sense and more of an instinct. A tempest was coming to Otogakure, and it would be one that would shake he and everything he knew within its confines to the core. There was no outrunning this storm, no real way to circumvent it's coming, all he could do was prepare. And so now he stood upon the very peak of Mount Oto, the mountain which had stood for a thousand years or longer, that which had watched Oto from the very beginning of it's creation. It was, in it's purest form, a symbol for the village it had one beyond it's fields of rice...it even, ironically enough, hid the symbol of the villages forgotten past beneath it's roots in the form of the Labyrinth.

Was he ready to face this storm? He wasn't sure. His battle with Kyojin had been the greatest conflict of his life thus far, but their were opponents out there so much stronger then the both of them put together. Even Kasuke, as powerful as the man was, was not invincible, his battle against Lady Nakamura had clearly indicated that. True, Nakamura was possibly the most powerful person that Xen had ever seen, but the truth still held fast. There were people out there stronger then the Wind master of Oto. Xenon had no delusions he could stand up to such a foe, were he to ever encounter such a individual, he would flee without any danger to his pride whatsoever. His pride was not so cheap as to be damaged by running from an opponent against which victory was impossible.
His team though...that would take some doing.

He wasn't entirely sure he could convince Kimiko to run away from anything save by force, and Raine was the exact same way. With them, force might not even be an option, come to that. More as like he'd have to knock them out via Genjutsu and and carry them both away. He suppose Dash-taichou, a force of reasonable common sense, might assist him if the stakes were truly dire enough. Still, he couldn't garuntee that he would be around to do such thing when the storm finally struck...what would he do if he was caught admidst the storms coming, and his team was lost amidst the tide.
He sighed. It was really more a rhetorical question. He'd get Kimiko. It was the only answer he could accept. Whenever danger was upon the girl, even if he did trust her to take care of it, he wanted to be there at her back just in case. Perhaps it was the instinct of a rival, a teammate, but regardless of the cause, he knew enough about himself to know that would be how he would react given the choice. Oto was only important so long as his team was in tact as Kasuke was under the Kage hat, and yet of all those...

Kimiko Momoe had been his first friend, in Oto...and indeed even before he'd arrived there, unbeknownst to her, they'd seemed tied at the heel by some unknown force of chance. She was different from him in so many ways, and yet despite this endlessly entertaining. She had, quite through shere force of will, undone all attempts made to emotionally distance himself from her, and made her way into becoming his friend.
Mokutan had become his friend after the incident with Xen's Parents, but it was not the same. Mokutan was completely loyal to Xenon. Had the bird the power, and Xenon the want, the bird would have led a charge into hell itself on his behalf. It was something that most save Medusa and, indeed, perhaps Kimiko herself, had noted about the bird.
But Xenon knew Kimiko was different. She was loyal in a different way. She would follow him into hell, beat him up, then bring him back. There was a great chance that they would end up clashing if Xenon strayed from her moral principals to far. That made her actually becoming his friend...different.

A friend you knew would follow you in all things, and a friend you knew might fight against you under the right circumstances, however unlikely, were as night and day to the young man, particularly those years ago when Kimiko had managed the feat. It was a risk, opening yourself to pain, a gamble...a luxury. He was more jaded to such risks now, accepting them, but this was indeed in the most part to Kimiko. To this day he still wasn't exactly sure how she'd managed to pull it off...
The lightning about was ripping at the air. He had to focus on the task at hand. He wouldn't move unto the next stage until the focus was absolutely perfect. This technique was extremely dangerous, and going into it without absolute control was near idiocy. He held his hands in the sign, his chakra complimenting the storm about them perfectly as again the thunder rolled. He was going to master this technique...because he was going to be ready...he was going to be prepared to ensure that his team was not washed away by the coming tempest...

Xenon opened his mouth ever so slightly, the lightning, that born from his chakra, began to coalesce and gather before his lips. Slowly but surely it began to form a sphere...
Xenon had always liked storms. They made him feel at ease. He could recall even when he was a child, sneaking outside even in the dead of night, should a particularly fierce storm roll in. They made him feel alive, made him feel like he truly belonged. Amidst his childhood swarmed in illusions, where he was the slave to those delusions, he was truly free in those moments, truly able to be REAL amidst that torrent of rain wind and thunder. There had even been a time when... she, had come out to join him.
Xenon was never sure how he felt about his mother. Hating her was irrational, and yet he still to this felt he was angry with her. Frustrated perhaps. She'd loved him, given him never ending protection and guidance...yet in the end the guidance had been false, and her protect unable to extend enough to sustain her own life. In dying for him she'd shown that she didn't really care enough to truly protect him. Dying for someone else was a selfish act. One to satisfy the self, not those that were left behind. This Xenon believed whole heatedly. He could more then attest to it.

Still though, did that mean that he hated his mother? No. He knew that he didn't. It didn't have anything to do with irrationality...he simply understood her better now. Back then, back when Xenon himself had had nothing he wanted to protect, he'd had no chance of understanding or forgiving his mother's sweet lies of world were good triumphed over evil. His methodical mind had merely seen an illusion attempting to deceive him, that indeed had deceived him for a long time before it was detected. But now it was different.
His mother had wanted to protect him, to keep him innocent, and stop him from having to see the world as it was...even he himself would do the same now. Fight to keep Kimiko and Raine naive to true nature of the world, fight to let them keep their dreams and illusions of what the world should be. Truth was not for everyone, and it could be a painful burden on the right shoulders. Xenon had merely been the worst possible kind of person to shelter. His mind was made for the truth, his soul and ideals uplifted by it.

No, he understood his mother now. And knew that for her inability to truly protect him, it may have been naivete on her own part that made her think sacrificing herself to protect him would somehow help him. There was always another way, always a way to protect what you cared about and sustain your life. And if their wasn't, if the odds were truly that far against you, and they hadn't been in their situation, then that was one illusion that Xenon himself would believe in...what was it Crow-sensei had said?
That sometimes it was the things that may, or not be true, illusions, that you had to believe in the most. He wasn't sure he agreed with that just yet...but he was willing to concede the issue on this point.
Even so, if that HAD been the case, then he supposed that his mother had truly loved him...and that was not a thing to be scorned. Xenon, though he denied it himself, knew well the value of such a thing, and never denied that in itself. Love was merely a costly luxury, a far more dangerous gamble than even friendship, for the price was that much greater upon losing it.
Xenon knew that his father, foolish man that he was, had loved him. The man was so naive, so hopeful and full of dreams if virtue in all men, that Xen had never doubted it for a second...but his mother. His mother was a different story. She'd always shown so much love...yet...there had always been brief moments of truth behind her eyes, moments where he could tell that she was different then his father. She didn't believe in the lies she was telling him...she didn't believe in happily ever afters.

But now that he looked back... no. No she did love him. Though she hadn't believed in the stories herself, she thought that believing in them would make him happy, and she'd wanted him to be happy. She'd wanted him to be protected and happy for all time...just like in those stories. Perhaps she'd been fooling herself even more then she had him.
In the end though, Xenon had lost her, and he would never be able to ask her these questions...never able to know for certain... and yet..
"I know you'll be a good boy...my Xen."
No, he was sure, in those last moments he saw her alive, that she DID love him. He supposed then, that he should be thankful to her. She'd loved him, and in spite of the pain cause when the illusions she'd put about him finally shattered, he'd become stronger for it. He'd become as he was now...and he was happy, he was proud of who he was now.
Yes...he decided. He was grateful. He wondered that it had taken him so long to work it out.
