"Don't get too far ahead!" called Neferous, immediately grabbing his ears. Why are my ears ringing? he thought. This was going to be a long hike. The trees were barely visible above the buildings.
Looking back, Neferous announced, "Thank you people for hating the tyrant so much and placing faith in me to help you. I won't let you down. In fact (hefting a large bag) I brought lunch and dinner for two days if we take small bites. Oh, and call me Nef. Everybody does."

Arc reached a hand out to Kaitlyn. Nervous of her running ahead. "Don't go to far ahead!"

Olin walked with them. He kept almost silent as he walked. He had brought his own food. He wasn't about to eat food brought by the demon. He trusted the demon well enough to continue, but not enough to be stupid.

"Your silence is thrilling," Neferous said. He couldn't blame Arc for being protective or Olin of distrust. "It's beef and potatoes. If I wanted to kill you immediately I wouldn't care so much." He shouldered the pack and glanced at the oncoming trees. "Be careful, they say strange things about the woods. Better stay on the road and stick together... Kaitlyn."

Arc realized how silent everyone was being. "I guess you're right." He laughed a little bit. "I'm not much of a beef eater though."

"I brought a variety. Along with a couple collapsable pots. I plan on making some stew, if you have a river marked on that map of yours."
Olin at least knew that if he cooked the food was safe. He had his own brand of herbs that he liked to throw in for flavor.

Neferous unfurled the map and peered at it. "There's one ten kilometers ahead with a bridge," he replied. "We'll stop there to stock up on water and cook."

Olin nodded and comtinued along the path. He moved over to Jillian. "Hey, what are your thoughts on his past?" he asked her quietly. He wanted to know honestly that he wasn't the only one with serious doubts.

Jillian shrugged. "I have no idea. We should keep an eye on him, but what can we do for now, but to follow his orders? And how would we find out anything more?" she pondered.
Meanwhile, Kaitlyn was walking and heard their calls. She felt bad about worrying them, and turned to go back, but when she did, she gasped. The path behind her had changed. When she had walked in a straight line, it was curved and not a sign of the others was seen. She spun around, starting to panic.

Neferous became irritated by Kaitlyn's hastiness. The path was long and he had lost sight of her. "Arc, do you have some wings handy?" he asked, passing him the map. "I need a birds-eye-view. Tell Kaitlyn to slow down!"

Arc gave a sigh and nodded."Sure." He let open his wings and flew up. Searching ahead for Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn saw Arc's figure about two a mile away. She started to follow, but she fell, and when she looked up, it was even farther away. She was scared; thousands of years of pollution could do weird things to trees. She screamed out a call to the rest, hoping they would hear.

"Lost?" a voice called, and a girl stepped out. She had short brown hair and pale skin, looking as if she was living in the woods. "Can I help you out? You look freaked." she laughed. Kaitlyn nodded. "Thank you very much." she said. "Alrighty, then, climb on." the girl said and suddenly, white fur sprang up from her skin and a long muzzle grew. Her feet and hands formed into paws and two white ears poked out of her head, all pieced together into a white wolf.
