Percusion ROCKS!!!!!! I choosed it because my grandfather and both of my uncles were percusionists and I think its stupid that most people think only guys can play the drums. If girls are in percusion people say they suck just because they're girls. I wanted to prove them wrong.

Well, the way I chose was that the band directors had an assembly for the 5th graders, this was to recruit us into band, and they showed us all the instruments we could start. Then they showed us some of the others, ones we had to try out for after the first concert. The Oboe, Bassoon, and Alto Sax. I saw the Alto and fell in love with the shape, the sound, everything. So, I had to start on flute or clarinet, and all I made were squeaks on the clarinet, so I was stuck with the flute. Then I tried to move on to the sax, but just wasn't meant to be...yet. Then in 8th grade I borrowed an alto from the school, and they switched me for freshman year. and the rest is history.

At my school, they had us try every instrument that the school district provided at elementary level. I really wanted to play clarinet, but I couldn't get a sound out of it. But, I was the first person to get a sound out of the flute. I was so excited about that since my mom and my sister both play flute. That was how I started to play flute. smile

Then, a few years later, I found a clarinet for $10 at a yard sale. I couldn't pass that up. I ended up teaching myself clarinet then.

I was thrown into Pit this marching season since the show was nothing but Pit parts. MY BD made me play Pit since I can pick up how to play different instruments real fast, and since I can memorize music extremely fast. This marching season, I ended up having to memorize 20 different parts.

i wanted to play the percussion first, but my parents didn't let me, so i chose the clarinet b/c at the assembly, the person played star wars and also it looked so complicated

and then i wanted to switch to oboe last year because it sounded pretty and sometimes like a duck smile and also the senior was the only one who played it last year, i didn't want the oboe to die xD

I started on flute because I liked the sound of it

then I started on trumpet cause my boyfriend (now ex) played it and showed me how

then I went to mellophone cause I hated the flute section in marching band

finally tenor sax cause theres no flutes in jazz band crying so I need to play that if I wanna be in it, but I still stuck with flute 4laugh

I picked up the trumpet in fifth grade because it was cheaper than a saxophone. True story. And i came to find out that i was a bit of a natural at it. I really never got great at it because i had a practice ethic deficiency. Oh well. After that and chorus I came to love music and picked up other instruments like the guitar and baritone.

I decided to play flute because that is what my mother played and we already had a flute.

I was the only one in my beginning brass class who had braces so my BD came over to me and said you will either play baritone or tuba, make your choice. I chose baritone mostly because it was smaller. Two years later, first chair baritone in the top level band at my high school as a sophomore. (Thats as low as my high school goes.) And no I'm not the only baritone. There happens to be two more.

When I was a kid, I thought my mom was the awesomest person in the world. & i remembered that she had played the baritone. So when I got to choose, I chose it as well. but now that im older, i think that the baritone chose me. I may be her spitting image, but don't have to be just like her.

When I was little, I thought my sister was the most awesome person in the world. She played the flute, so of course I wanted to play the flute also. She tried to teach me before we tried out different instruments, but the most sound I ever got out of it was a few seconds of an almost-note using just the mouthpiece. So, naturally, when I tried out with a whole flute, I failed miserably.

My next choice was 'the bells', which is what we called it when we were that little. Basically, vibraphone, etc. They tested me by seeing how well I could tap my foot steadily while clapping a rhythm. In the end, they told me that I couldn't play it because they 'had too many people.' In other words, I probably sucked at rhythm.

It was a very depressing day. My first choice didn't materialize, and neither did my second choice. But I was determined, and so I decided that I'd try one more instrument. I decided that would be the clarinet (After all, the drums and brass instruments were only for boys, and I was not a boy. I was a lady.). I guess I did alright when I tried it. All I can remember is the revolting taste of the disinfectant that they used, and that the reed felt funny in my mouth. Then, during the assembly the band director told my parents that the clarinet was 'the queen of all woodwinds.' I decided I'd give it a try.

Now, not only do I play the clarinet very well (I made districts biggrin I'm quite proud. I was the only sophomore from my school.), I also play the flute, alto sax, tenor sax, piano, and guitar at a 5th grade-7th grade level.

I play the FLUTE, and i love it! My flute is 50 years old. I got it from my mom. I think it is a magical instrument.

Well, when I was in 5th grade, the middle school held a instrument tryout night.
I went and tried percussion, trumpet, flute, and baritone.
In the end I got my top pick of percussion.
I picked that because, it seemed like fun, was easier(seeming) than anything else, and I wasn't that into the flute anyway.

Now, here I am, first year of marching band, with 3 years of concert band behind me!
