Auditions were today and I made it! It's actually a split this year, me and one of my best friends got it. He and I are both really excited to get to work together and we're excited that we will both get to marching some of the show and conduct some of it. smile Fun!

Congrats, hope you do good.

I'm going to be a sophomore drum major in the fall ;w; I'm extremely nervous, and I'm not especially loud either. Is anybody else going to Drum Major Academy this summer, or have you gone before? I'm curious to know what it's like.

I know of three people that are going to DMA. One is a sophomore, drum major for a school that's opening up, one is our current drum major, and one is our current field conductor (he and I were the only ones going for the position- he got it, but it's cool). Our drum major says that it's a lot of fun, and she improved a lot after it. I'm not sure if my friend who's field conductor is actually going, though- he just left because he was asked by someone we know to march with Jersey Surf this summer.

But, I'm rambling. Everyone I've talked to says it's exhausting, but really fun.

Hello all! So I was selected as a Drum major for this coming marching season. I'm excited and terrified at the same time. We've not started rehersals yet, so I haven't actually had to do anything as a DM yet, but I'm a DM with an anxiety disorder...you can see how this is problematic. Any suggestions as to how I can keep calm so I don't have an attack while on the podium? I've got meds and breathing exercises my doctor told me to do, but any other methods I can add would be great! (PS, I was a pit member last year and actually had an attack during a show...I'd like to keep that from repeating, especially considering much more is riding on me this coming year). Oh, and we're going to BOA this year which is super exciting considering it's my first year on the podium! But it's also nerverwrecking O.O

My senior year. i unfortunatly didn't make drum major. the overly cocky kid did. i came in close second. one good thing though that i'm pretty happy with is that i actually made woodwind captain XD that will do fine with me. Sure i didn't make dm but the hell with it XD i got something!!!

I've been several parades during my tenure as a drum major...
Most of what I've seen are either pipe bands, which are awesome by themselves, or 'other' marching bands.
The drum majors I see at the front of them... they make me sad.
All they really do is stand there. Maybe conduct a little.
Every drum major, myself included, that I've actually known do wicked cool stuff with a mace.
While this guy ain't the greatest, this is what I'm talking about.
here
Anyone here do things like that?

Capt. Mary Read
Well, I had a lot of help from my boyfriend's older brothers, both of whom were Drum Majors in High School and one is currently the Drum Major at his college. Both of the brothers advised me to just relax when you audition. For my audition we were asked questions, and we were judged based on how we responded to see how you would be able to handle certain situations. If you are asked questions like these, I'd suggest answering them in a way that would demonstrate your leadership abilities by possessing the capabilities to handle tough situations. I was named Drum Major over my fellow band member who auditioned because he stated that he would go to an adult to take over and run to if there is trouble, without first trying to correct the situation. I was told later that a Drum Major should be able to control situations without running to the instructor every five minutes. Also, some other key things to keep in mind are just WHY you want to be a Drum Major, and how you would use your position to help others. If you are auditioning because you want to look cool and have the title...you're in a tougher position, but if you want to be able to help others succeed, and help your band be the best that it can be, make sure to let your judges/instructors know just how you'd be able to help others become better people.
This may have been sort of confusing, but if you have questions, feel free to PM me with more specific questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability, and I can also ask the previous Drum Majors as they are both back for Winter Break. Good luck, and don't be afraid to PM me if you have questions! I'll do my best to help you out!
ok try and solve the situation first. ok. this may help. because currently I just became Drum MAjor. and tomarrow I'm going to band camp to become a better one. I have a question. How do you avoid getting into situations where people think your being unfair to others. because I don't want to be in that sitiuation.

drum majors - i need your advice!
i'm having a lot of trouble being relaxed when i conduct
my shoulders and back are always very tense and it makes conducting really painful, really quickly
it's not like that because i'm nervous or anything, my shoulders are just naturally like that because of my posture..
but yeah, it's getting to be a real big pain (literally) and i really need to figure out how to be more relaxed

edit:
with a few more days of practice my issue is starting to fix itself c:

Agreed. I had always wished to meet him someday, he seemed like such a great person. I know tons of people whose lives he changed, and I feel like he's impacted mine, even though I never met him.

Haha, i feel kinda out of place here, but i'm a drum major at a new school. I am the ONLY drum major and probably one of the few that are still sophomores. our band has like 30-40 people (some kids don't show up 1/2 the time) but its kinda nice being small. I know everyone by name and all that good stuff, but we still get to do most of the stuff others do. Last year our drum major sucked and couldn't even keep time, so the director had to sit w/ him and do it for him. Also, our percussion section thinks there amazing and always make fun of the same 5 or 6 people and no matter what you do they never stop. I'm 1 of the few percussionists who doesn't do any of that annoying stuff and would rather just practice. Last thing, I play razz ercussion, Tenor Sax, Alto Sax, Piano (if its different from percussion) and I mess around on the trumpet every once and a while.

Do you conduct with an Ictus or just a strict 4/4 pattern

So...This past marching season at my school, we had two new DMs..One did really well, but the other isn't what I would think that a Drum Major should be...Maybe it's me just complaining, but she made me hate band and she made others hate it too...She was so mean to everyone in the band. She would talk about band members behind their back, one occurrence being at our annual Section Leader Retreat. Also, she would constantly be late to our rehearsals that were early in the morning.
Our director has told us multiple times that to be a DM you would have to uphold more responsibility than any band member. He told us that "A Drum Major needed to be earlier than the earliest band member and stay later than the one who stayed the latest." Those are his exact words.
Like I said, maybe it's just me complaining, but I don't think that she is a good example of a Drum Major...What do you think?

So I'm trying out for DM after spring break. It consists of conducting one minute of music and a short interview. I have some questions for all of you current and past DM's, but I don't have them in front of me right now, so this is just an attention grabber.

I plan to conduct the first minute of this piece. Is it ok that I'm using a piece that we're playing in band?
