The totoma who earned this name had always struggled with language; getting the right words out, or any words at all, was a challenge. Thus, she spoke as little as possible, in single-word sentences.
One spring, torrential rains led to a mudslide, which then led to a heavy rockslide, which then meant many injured totoma. The battered doe worked hard to push boulders aside and get kin to safety. Even so, a young rescued totoma was on the border between life and death, passing in and out of consciousness.
Exhausted to her aching bones, the frazzled and desperate totoma did the only thing she could think of: she shoved herself into the other totoma’s face and shouted,
”DON’T! DEAD!”
Startled, the other totoma bolted awake and stayed that way for the rest of the night. PMed! --phoe
