"Oh really?" Terryn leaned over, bringing her face close to his. "I never lose." She stole a kiss from him before pulling away with a smirk.

"I beat you at cards on the way to Russia. Nearly every game," Marcus reminded her. "You lost then."

"No, I willingly let you think I lost." Terryn nodded. "In actuality, it was I who won because I was really playing the game to deceive you into thinking I am bad at cards."

Marcus grinned. "It makes no difference what psychological tricks you were playing. You're bad at cards anyway. And as far as the game with my grandmother goes, I am champion, even amongst my brothers. It took me just thirty-five minutes when I first told Gran that I had impregnated a girl." He smirked. "Bet you couldn't do that."

"Really?" Terryn grinned mischievously. "Hmmmm, you know what would be interesting? Seeing how long it takes to break her after I tell her the real reason you were in Russia for a year."

Marcus started, but after a moment, he looked intrigued. "Hm. Who would be playing? I could do it in under forty-five minutes, I'm sure of it. If it were you, however..." He grinned. "When are you going to tell her?"

Terryn shrugged. "Oh, eventually." She gave him an evil smile,, keeping herself completely cool looking. "I plan to surprise you."

"I'll be on my guard." Marcus rubbed his beard. He wasn't looking forward to it. "Am I allowed to tell Gran that you have no idea what you're taking about, and that you lie?"

Terryn shook her head. "No, that would just be cheating, and that makes you automatically lose."

Marcus sighed. "Well, if you insist. But then we have to come up with something equally difficult for you." He squinted. "Do you have any secrets that you'd rather no one know?"

Terryn thought a moment before smiling demurely. "Well there is the fact that I am pregnant with another man's child..."

Marcus sighed. "No, no, Terryn, it has to be something unexpected. Something uncharacteristic." He looked thoughful. "If it's not too drastic, we could tell Gran that you are literate."

At this, Marcus had to laugh. "She'd be beside herself with happiness." He shook his head. "There must be something that you are ashamed of. Other than me."

"Well..." There was one thing Terryn was greatly ashamed of, but it wasn't something she was prepared to tell the duchess. It wasn't something she wanted anyone but her and Marcus to know.
