Maia didn't understand the joke. Crying sounds? She didn't want Dari to cry. She went over to Dari and gave him a hug. "I'll buy marshmallows for you every time I go to the store," she promised him. "But you can't eat all of them at once. You'll blow up like a balloon." And no one wanted that. Dari was perfect the way he was.
"Want to make more constellations with me?" she asked.

Dari nodded. "Certainly." It was about time to purge anyway. His clothes were fitting just a little bit more tightly, and as a creature based upon pressure it was too obvious to ignore. He liked his size, and small adjustments were hard to make. Did he just allow everything to grow larger, or did he choose one body part? He had gotten used to his normal height.
Toby began to make the planned omelets at the stove, and for once he didn't feel like the world was crushing him.

"Good,"Maia was pleased with Dari's agreement. She gave him a smile, and then looked to Toby to see what he was doing. "Do you flip these like pancakes?" she asked, curiously.
She turned to Dari. "Toby told me about marshmallow frosting. I want to make that for your cupcakes, would you like that?"

"Yes, or if you're a master you can do it with the pan." Almost immediately Toby flipped the current omelet with a spatula and a self-depreciating little smile.
Dari shrugged. "I have no sense of taste."
"It's sort of sticky, I think you'd like it."

"Well then, you don't need the spatula," Maia said, giving Toby a smile. In her mind, he was a master. He knew so much more about cooking than she did, and even though she was enthusiastic to learn, she doubted she'd ever have the same amount of knowledge concerning the kitchen that Toby possessed.
"You don't have to have one," the selkie assured Dari. "You like icecream without a sense of taste."

"Or hot or cold," Toby added.
Dari shrugged. "I don't understand taste any better than you understand my..." He motioned to himself, lost for words for a moment. "A-six-four, or whatever it's called."
Toby gave a dismissive hand wave. "Nobody memorizes those things."

It was growing late, Maia had set out a blanket in Toby's yard for them to sit on, and when she'd made sure there were no wrinkles in it, she went to fetch Dari. "Come on," she invited the alien outside. "I put out a blanket so we won't have to sit on the grass, and we can see everything from the spot I chose! See?" she looked around for Toby, before whispering, "I think he's feeling a bit better."

Dari emerged from the house without fear. The fence was tall and solid to keep him from needing to paint up or stay inside. He looked over the blanket and simultaneously looked up at the sky. Yes, it was a good place.
He, however, saw no use in whispering. "I think he is."

"Good," Maia smiled. "I'll go find him," she said. "He might be making the hot chocolate already," she left Dari outside to seek the werewolf out, looking in the kitchen. "Toby, are you in here?" she asked. "I found the perfect spot for star watching."

Toby was washing his hands.
"Yup. Did you? Alright. Here." He dried a hand on his pant leg and offered a mug out to Maia. Hot chocolate with a marshmallow melting on top.

Maia took the mug happily, beaming at Toby. "Thank you," she said. Oooh, and it even had a marshmallow on top! "Where's yours?" she asked, looking for another mug. "You get to be by me, and we'll find more constellations." Maybe another seal shape. Or a penguin. Maia had seen penguins, due to google's vast amount of picture-knowledge.

Toby picked up a second mug and lifted it. He wasn't really feeling hot chocolate, but Maia had seemed so excited for it. The worst case scenario was that it sat untouched and got cold. No harm, no foul. His did not have a marshmallow.
"Alright, come on." Stargazing had been nice while he was big and furry, so maybe it'd be nice now too. He grabbed his cell phone from the counter for the sake of constellations and followed Maia back out over the patio.

Maia noticed immediately that Toby did not have a marshmallow, but made no comment. Had it been the last one? He was awfully generous, sacrificing a marshmallow for her benefit. "The stars are brighter at HQ. Maybe we could watch them there again, next time you have to work overnight." Not next full moon, she didn't want to mention that.
She led Toby out onto the blanket and looked up. "Still beautiful here, though," she said, taking a sip of her hot chocolate.

"Maybe. It's once a month, so there's a good chance," Toby offered. He waited for Maia to sit on the blanket before he flipped off the outside lights and joined them. He had no trouble seeing in the dark, and it'd help the brightness of the stars. Dari moved over to allow him to sit between himself and Maia and Toby settled in and took a sip of hot chocolate. Not too bad, he thought. He tilted his head up.
"Mm. It's not bad."
Dari tilted his head up to clear his vision for the stars alone. He fell back and bounced slightly.

"I heard about lights that appear across the sky, but they don't seem to happen here," Maia said, sipping at her hot chocolate. "Well. Here, in the state, you can see them. I looked it up on Google. But I haven't seen any colorful lights since moving here."
She took another sip, effectively finishing off the marshmallow. "This is really good, Toby." she said.
