"Just me," Thom assured him with a dry laugh. The grin remained in place. "I 'aven't wanted t' be seen."

Losing interest in the pair for a moment, Thom glanced around the surrounding branches and soon picked out a camera trained, as expected, on the pair below. With surprising ease he navigated the branches towards it, and from there it only took a few sharp tugs to successfully disonnect it from its base and end the transmission. Undoubtably the labs would be alerted and send someone to repair it, but probably not before he had a nice conversation with the dhole and the pegasus.

With the camera out of commission, Thom risked abandoning the trees, climibg down the trunk to 'stand' coiled near the base of the tree, risen to a height somewhere between Gaius's and Lucas's. "That explains why I 'adn't 'eard of it, must've been just before I arrived on the island," he replied, picking up as if the destruction of the camera hadn't happened. "Thom," he supplied, along with a little nod in greeting. "Beg pardon for interruptin', but it's an interestin' bit of information... One must wonder why Zach's off attackin' doctors when he's so died-'ard for th' labs now."

Gaius watched the snake's movement nervously - that is, until he disabled the camera. An eyebrow shot up with a note of understanding. He recalled his last encounter with Seth, and the sense of bonded secrecy that seemed similar to this gathering. And if Lucas was against the labs as well...

"Yeah, that raises a whole load of questions," he agreed, looking back at Lucas. "Maybe that's why he's such a lab-pet? But... still, how'd he attack a doctor? I thought that's what the chips were supposed to stop!" He ran a hand back through his mane, brushing the matted hair between the gap in his fingers. "Wonder which one it was? I can't imagine him attacking that precious," he grumbled the word, "Duvert."

He watched Thom curiously, then a smile appeared on his face when the snake disconnected the camera. He wondered how long it would take before the labs showed up.

"What Zach told me was that about a year ago there was a hurricane. It had the strength the knock out the power on the Island. Even the labs power went down along with the chips. What's worse is that during the storm they were performing an experiment on some of the Islanders here. Some kind of instinct serum. I tried to learn more, but Zach didn't know. Anyway, Duvert was transporting Zach to the labs for one of his changes, but Zach started changing in the car. They crashed and Zach escaped. Apparently he went nutty after the change. While he was like that he ran into a Dr. Lockheart and nearly killed her. I guess things were weird for a time. Even Duvert got locked out of the labs for a while and lived in the Village until he and Zach got arrested. Moreau wanted Zach dead, but Duvert defended him and the dragon didn't even get a slap on the wrist in the end. But now Zach's probably so paranoid that if he does something bad he'll be put down and he feels indebted to Duvert for saving his life. But still scared of the doctor. That's the feeling I got, anyway."

Lucas crossed hims arms over his chest. "So Zach worried at me all last night about how he might not get his eye back because of that. At me. They are going to try to give him his eye back." Gritting his teeth, Lucas shut his own eye and supressed a growl. "He nearly kills a doctor and doesn't get punished."

"So Zach's playin' Duvert's lapdog because he knows he's on Moreau's bad list... An' Moreau'll off him if he slips up." Thom couldn't decide whether this news pleased him or not. It did, to some extent. If they could, say, set Zach up, frame him for another 'accident, that might be the end of the dragon. Or, they could always... "I wonder if Zachary could be persuaded t' go against Moreau?" he questioned aloud, more to himself than to either of the others. "Scarin' 'im made 'im switch sides once, per'aps it could again."

"'Ow's that one-eye thing been goin', by th' way?" he asked, carelessly switching subjects and turning his attention to Lucas. "Emelyn told me it was yours, I told 'er Zach 'ad it. You wouldn't 'appen to've seen Emelyn lately, at that?" His casual attitude faltered somewhat, a hint of apprehension showing through. He really was worried about the hedgehog woman. No one seemed to have seen her since she'd sliced out his chip.

"That sounds like the guy," Gaius snorted. "He may be a dragon, but he's pretty spineless..." His voice quieted as a memory rose up unbidden in his mind. A dark room, voices in the shadow, bound to a chair. "I... think you're right about him. About being scared of Duvert, that is..." he said, his voice faultering.

"But still," he said, lifting his head, "if Moreau'd off him for slipping up, then why hasn't he? It's not like Zach has a clean track record. Just look at what he's been doing to folks around the village. And he's been dragged up to the labs again since then. I... saw it."

Gaius shot Thom a sharp look at the callous inquisition. Did he have no understanding for the guy's condition? Wait, what was he thinking? The snake was a man once, after all... the half-formed remaining leg was testiment to it. And now he had to slither. But still, it was a sensitive subject. Gaius looked back at Lucas with concern.
PostPosted: Sat May 19, 2007 10:21 pm

"No kidding about being spineless. He was whimpering into his drink. I don't think he'd go against Moreau. He was frightened enough just thinking about the possibility of facing Moreau again. Death frightened him even more." A furry eyebrow lifted "...what do you mean 'again'? Zach actually switched sides once?"

He looked to Gaius. "Think about it. Duvert would no doubt favor Zach over anyone else, especially if that other was a person who disliked the labs. I doubt Moreau hears about everything that goes on down in the Village. I bet so long as Zach doesn't make it completely obvious, Duvert can bend the situation to put Zach in a good light. Pro-labs or whatever, and Zach being innocent. I wouldn't put it past Duvert to do that if Zach really is in a precarious position with Moreau. Honestly, I'm sure that short of horribly maiming or killing one of us, Zach could get away with quite a bit. They only want us alive and healthy enough for experimentation."

Lucas frowned at the first question from Thom. "It's going poorly. And having Zach holding on to my eye, showing it off to people and now hearing he might get his back is just..." He trailed off and gritted his teeth, unable to even articulate how he felt about everything now. But it was clear by his expression it was infuriating for him.

When Emelyn was mentioned his angry look faded and he looked up at Thom. "Emelyn is in the labs. She told me she was going out for a walk, but never came back. When I called the labs about her they said she was with them, unharmed, but wouldn't tell me more than that. I've been watching Reuben since she's been gone." He gestured to the dog that was playing alongside the other dog's.

"No one's immediately happy about bein' stuck here," Thom countered with a shrug, and folded his arms. "I 'ardly think he was fallin' at Duvert's feet after 'is first change, whether this attack was accidental or not. I think Moreau's threat scared 'im into switchin' sides, and I think another threat would 'ave 'im switchin' back. Admittedly, I'm not sure he'd be th' most loyal teammate, but 'e could be useful."

Thom had decided long since that there was no escape from the island. They couldn't go back to their old lives; that was impossible. With some work, however, they could prevent future innocents from having to join them. The chips could be removed, he was living proof of that, and, with work and planning, they could fight against the labs. If they could get rid of Moreau and Duvert, the labs should crumble. But to do so, they needed more help. Much more help. And if that meant threatening unwillings into suicide missions, then so be it. Every person could be useful.

"We'll get your eye away from Zach, at th' very least," Thom assured him, letting his arms fall. "Can't promise it'll be replaced, but at least you'll 'ave it, not him." His expression faltered and darkened with the knews regarding Emelyn, and he shook his head, rubbing his temple with the ball of his hand. "Damn... It's been weeks, I'd 'ave thought she'd be out by now. I 'ope.. but she's Emelyn. She 'asn't done anythin'. They wouldn't do anythin' to 'er, right?"

Gaius's ears folded back as he pulled a displeased face. The idea of having Zach on their side was a less than pleasant thought for the pegasus. "He'd as soon turn us over, knowing him. He's a weasel. One look from Sabin and he'd spill everything about us. Besides, I'm not siding with him, anti-labs or no." With that, he folded his arms and took a squatting position near the tree. Vixen, listening to all the goings-on, moved over to sit beside him, leaving the other dogs.

"Besides, it wouldn't be right to just use him and lose him... even if it's against the labs," Gaius said, his morals nettling him. A look of intrigue lit his eyes. "There's other ways we can reach them... Get at them behind the fence. It would just take time, but I know there's talk, plans being made..."

He snorted at Thom's promise, grimacing. "Good luck getting it... I tried. Didn't end up so well. But..." His words faded away as the other discussed Emelyn. Gaius's expression grew worried. "Emelyn? The nice, spikey girl, right? Why was she taken in?"

"I'm with Gaius," Lucas threw in. "He can't be trusted. I'm sure he'd turn in his own mother to save his own life. And he's so desperate to get his eye regrown that I'm sure he wouldn't do anything to upset the labs even a little." He paused and looked at Gaius. "Plans?"

The dhole sighed. "As much as I'd like to get it away from him, who is to say that Duvert won't just have someone come into my duplex and return it to Zach later?" He waved a hand to Gaius as he spoke about his own failed attempt at getting the eye back. "Not sure how'd you be able to get it back. I would if I could... But if I did anything to Zach I'd probably lose my other eye." He hated it. He knew the labs had him under control now. Just the thought of having both eyes gone, groping and stumbling blindly forever on this Island, filled him with fear. It added to the frustration.

"Yes, Emelyn is the one turned into a hedgehog." Lucas took at step closer to Thom. "You knew she was in there? Do you know why they took her?" He had the feeling the snake knew more about this.
PostPosted: Sat May 19, 2007 11:20 pm

"We could make it work." Thom shrugged. "Don't tell him th' full plan, don't give him a say in th' matter. Give him a task an' make sure he accomplishes it. If we threaten 'im an' make sure he doesn't 'ave the opportunity t' say no, 'e won't." He laughed. "Zachary's a spineless coward. If he thinks workin' with us will save his life, 'e'll do it."

"You wouldn't be able to keep it in the duplex," Thom continued, peering at Lucas as if it were common sense. "If you don't want them takin' it back, you hide it. It's better than knowin' Zach's walkin' around with it, isn't it? For example, I took a laptop from Jordan a while back. Can't do a damn thing with it, it's got some sort of lock on it, but at least I know he doesn't have it. We'll find a way to get the eye back, an' you can hide it somewhere safe. For your own comfort."

He laughed once more, though the sound soon faded with the dhole's question. He spared a glance towards the ruined camera, as if expecting it to sprout legs and reconnect itself, then lifted a hand to tap the back of his neck, which he'd only recently cleared of its bandage. "I assumed she was there. Emelyn cut my chip out. Th' guards showed up, carted her off. I escaped. I 'aven't seen 'er since. Been tryin' t' get in touch with her."

The pegasus-man's eyes went wide as he stared at Thom. "You... You have your chip out?" All other discussion was temporarily wiped from his mind. "What? When? A-And... you're okay? They haven't caught you?"

The idea rocked him back on his long feet. The implications! This snake was a free man, as free as they could get on this island...

...If... If he, Gaius, were chip-less... He could be with Nita... wouldn't have to fear Zach... or Sabin's manipulations...

Reason quickly swelled up to overwhelm the emotional inclinations. It couldn't be that easy, and the guards still had guns. He wouldn't be able to stay in the village, and how would that help him with Nita?
PostPosted: Sat May 19, 2007 11:52 pm

"Have you thought of what would happen to you once Zach spills to the labs what happened? You'd be in just as much, if not more, than him. You ready for that? Hell, you can't be threatening Zach forever. The minute he's out of your sight, he'd go crying to Duvert, begging for his protection."

Where on earth would he hide it? Lucas wasn't very happy with the idea of burying his eye somewhere, but he had to admit it was better than letting it stay in Zach's possession.

The revelation that Thom was chipless made Lucas' ears sit upright. "You're serious? You got your chip out?" Surprise then gave way to concern again. "God...I hope Emelyn is okay." At least her disappearance had not been in anyway Lucas' fault, but hearing she'd done this made Lucas more worried for her. Cutting out a chip... what kind of punishment could she get for that? "What if they do something bad to her?" He looked at Thom.

"A few weeks ago," he repeated, turning to point out the still-raw scar on the back of his neck. He hadn't ever been able to stitch up the wound, so it had taken much longer to heal than it might have otherwise, not to mention had left a much nastier mark in its wake. But he didn't mind. Thom was just glad that it hadn't gotten infected. "They 'aven't caught me yet, as you can see. Th' labs aren't as infalliable as they think they are."

"'Owever," he added, turning to give Gaius a pointed frown. "I think, after speakin' with Jamal, that I'm very lucky to've gotten off as light as I 'ave. And, might I add, it's much easier for some of use to stay 'idden than others." It was true, his situation was almost ideal. He had no side-effects to speak of and the animal he'd been turning in to was perfectly suited for remaining unseen in the jungle. Gaius and his hooves probably wouldn't be so lucky.

"I'll admit... I wasn't thinkin' about her when I asked her." Thom grimaced, shoulders slumping a bit. "She was the only person I trusted with it.. Though she'd do th' best job of it. It didn't occur t' me that she could get in trouble for it. But, think about it, she's Emelyn. What reason would the labs 'ave t' be upset with 'er before this? After this? They can't do much, she's done nothin' t' warrant it. It's her first offense, an' she's not even th' one who's free."
PostPosted: Sun May 20, 2007 12:13 am

A muscle in Gaius's cheek twitched as Thom gave him an easily-read look, and he lowered his head. It was true... how could he, a big black-and-tan thing with wings and hooves ever hide out in the wilds? Sure, he could survive, but he couldn't avoid the labs. Not with their cameras.

"So, that's how it is, then..." he said and sighed. Appearing to accept that fact, he looked back up, expression firm. "Emelyn... will be okay, I hope. You're right, she seems to have stayed in the clear. Like Nita. Still, the labs can be harsh even on a first strike. We don't know if they want to dissuade others from helping dechip friends."

"But, we have an opportunity here," he continued, looking at Thom. "Now, I don't have any ideas myself, but the three of us seem to be on the same side as far as going against the labs, right?" He glanced between the snake and dhole quickly. "And... none of us really likes Zach. I don't like using him, but if we could even just keep him away with fear..." he shrugged. "Was there anything else he told you, Lucas?"

"Considering how long Jamal and Annie have been loose..." Lucas began, then just let the sentence die. He then lifted a hand to the back of his own neck.

His ears twitched. Pulling back his hair, Lucas turned to Thom and pointed to his stitched eye. "This was my first offense. I was made the example. You aren't the first unchipped person, what if they made Emelyn an example for others?" His fur sat up a bit on his neck. "Maybe there is a reason they are holding on to her for so long. Maybe waiting to see how much trouble you cause before deciding how to punish her?" There was an angry look on his face, but his emotions quickly cooled, his shoulders sagged and he let out a slow breath.

Moving back, he took a seat near Gaius and started petting Dasher and Reuben who trotted up to him. "Not really. Not anything of any interest. We fought a little, talk fighting, and then he lumbered off. For some reason he told me to ask you if you'd be missed by anyone." Lucas shrugged.
