Okay, so since I'm the resident ex-AMCer turned Q&Fer turned GCDer, I might as well bite this subject.
i started a year ago, but it was right before this insane amount of sponsors. it seems like once a week they're pushing us to sponsors and it seems almost as bad as website advertisements.
they also used to be mostly sustained by the /donation items/.. now they're called thank you letters. everyones paying a lot of money for this stuff and it doesn't seem to be going toward anything... Word bump still doesn't work. the games still glitch out. theres a lot of problems i always assumed the money would go toward fixing. but making it to level 75 on word bump was a fruitless effort when nothing was rewarded.
With the donation items, that was probably a consequence of their popularity. Gaia has very good legal reasons for changing the name. (Namely, you can't go, "Well, I thought I could claim an exemption." Which is silly to begin with, but people do believe that.)
Even back in 2004, I thought that the name "donation item" was a misnomer - I mean, sure, you weren't getting material possessions in return for it, just game trinkets that aren't worth anywhere near $2.50 apiece. But when you had people who were donating upwards of $100 per month (yes, there were people like that back in the day), one has to wonder about their intentions.
But I digress.
I actually do agree that Gaia's moves have been a bit excessive in the past few weeks. Like, the first week of December we got the Matrix, the Hills, AND Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle offers. Granted, the middle one of those caused massive amounts of wank, so they may have sped up the very popular latter quest to appease the masses.
The pajamas I'm actually not offended about - I don't see it as much different from any of the other items in the Gaia store. "Mommy, I want Bump sweatpants!" Does it come with a corresponding item? Well, yeah, but on the flip side they actually made the OMG a monster in battle and have OMG swag out the a**. There are Grunny slippers (just like in Gaia!) and Gwee and Kiki and Coco plushies. (Actually, I think the Gaia Store Gwee came before MC Gwee.) I find the Cash Shop to be more offensive at times - I mean, yeah, Hermes' Moon. Gaia knows that there's a significant amount of users that spend excessive amounts on Gaia. I think this is just enabling them further.
But I also think that a lot of the adults - yes, the adults - are enabling Gaia. I mean, don't ******** turn around and say, "GAIA IS GREEDY FOR PUTTING A $10 ITEM IN THE CASH SHOP - WHAT'S NEXT, $100 ITEMS?!" and then go and buy a Hermes' Moon for every generation just because you like the cheeseball that much that you want to keep it 4evz and can't accept the fact that it changes. Don't go and post in GCD, "Well, I was tempted to buy a pair of pink pants just so I could get rich on Gaia" - what the ******** is wrong with you that you're prioritizing a pair of ******** game pants that aren't even real over ACTUAL ******** PANTS?
In short, maybe Gaia's going to hell in a handbasket. But the users - even though they protest in the forums - speak volumes louder with their wallets.

Sorry, Flower, that wasn't directed at you; that was my general frustration at the utter dumbshittery that I've borne witness to.

There's a valid reason for it. Any number of them actually. But I'd hate myself for spelling them out.
I admit that Gaia has some issues with appealing to a younger crowd, but that's precisely why it needs to be kept in check.

Fact check: Monthly Collectible Gwee came first.
