If played right the 13th Co. can walk all over any army.

You give them to much credit. As far as i can tell, only the eldar have the honour of bieng flexible enough to take down any other force.
ANY army can beat ANY army. It's why there are multiple options for Troops, Elites, Fast Attack, Heavy Support and HQ. It's why wargear exists. Its just up to the gamer to decide beforehand what to take. That is the weak point of the army. the general.
Don't forgot the dice. You can be the best general in the world but you're gonna' be screwed if the dice don't like you. xd

My dice want to see a die. Thats how much they hate me. crying
I know how you feel man. My dice are the worst dice ever. Hence, I borrow my brothers whenever possible. ^.^ His actually roll semi-decently. ninja

1. Yes the general is indeed a weakpoint, but you have to admit that you can look at a match up between two different armies and guess which will win based on experience.
2. The dice are evil a majority of the time, yes, this is true. but, only fools put thier units on the line and wish for luck from the dice. Its called inexperience and un-neccissary risk taking.

However if you don't put your units on the line and take a few risks you can easily lose a battle. You simply have to know when to take risks and when not to, when to sacrifice, and when not to.

Thats where tactics come in. Risk need not be taken.

If you ask me, part of tactics is taking risks. For instance, in my army I let my Striking Scorpions infiltrate and run ahead of my army, why? Because they are great at soaking up fire. So while everything is shooting my big bad Striking Scorpions, all of my ranged stuff is picking them off. By the time they realize my tactic, it's normally too late. I sacrifice my Striking Scorpions so my ENTIRE army is clear for a few rounds. I think that's a good trade off.

Thats a tactic, not a risk. risk is basically a generals last resort to deal with a problem while a tactic is your original plan. You are using an expendable unit to ensure the rest of your army is able to get into a better position and you know how to make them last until that objective is complete.

Okay, then we simply have different opinion on what is a risk.

A risk to me is when you put a unit in the heat of a battle and pray to god they survive. A risk is instead of taking the extra round to go into that cover over there with your cc troops, to run straight into the middle of the battlefiield without cover and hope you reach it to that big powerful beefy point-wise shooty squad before your big beafy points-wise close combat squad goes boom. I take a risk whenever I move my unit within' firing distance. I NEED to get to this point of the map, but I have to risk some of my troops to get there.

Ah. i see. I concider most of those as risk, that if you took alittle more time and patience you could achieve with less casualties. I do understand the idea of point control however, if the enemy take a certain point your army suffers, so you send units to take and hold it, nothing risky there more of a strategic decision. In short, i find risk to be actions that are: short cut to problems, and short sighted goals.

Hello, I'm playing a space marine army. I am fairly new to the warhammer universe but have a pretty good grasp on tactics needed to win the battles.
I have about 600 points of Space marines now working my way up slowly.

To add to the discussion you have going on already,
"A good leader need not make mistakes he simply waits for his opponent to do so."

yesterday i played against a space marine army (an assualt army), with my space marine army, and i only lost 4 of my assualt squad and my terminator seargent, while my opponenet lost everything except for 4 models (cant remember which).

i thank my dice for that! also, they named my remaining assualt marine satan, as he survived 4 rounds od close combat against his entire command squad... in the fifth, my termies turned up and showed the combat squad the door...

Lol, thats funny. I have a model dubbed Satan as well, he is an ordinary infantry but tends to bust a cap and then kill against gray knights more then any human should..

Finally got those parts today, and a free booklet with Black Templars in it. They look so cool...

Also, I'm giving the Arch Angels Chapter Master another remake. Again? You ask? Why? You ask? Because I'm differcult like that. Besides... I have Primarch rules to make up... xp
