Sanvi walked into the woods and looked around. She knew how to get to her home, but was surprised that nobody was there to meet her.

Sanvi quickly led them to her home, where there were several demons at the entrance. "So you finally came back," one said.
"Yes," Sanvi replied. "I only came because the leader has died and named me as his successor."

Garin watched what was going to happen, ready to jump in front of her.

The demon laughed. "Well, we'll just have to check that out," he said. He grabbed Sanvi's wrist and pulled her over to a larger group of people.
Aquaria followed her warily.

"Sanvi here says that Jace named her as his successor," the demon said, referring to Sanvi's old master. Another demon stepped forward. "And how, may I ask, did he die?" he asked Sanvi.
Aquaria stepped forward. "I stabbed him."

Garin watched the demons and was ready to defend Aquaria.

The demons laughed again. One decided to test her claim. He grabbed her wrist and quickly drew a line across the palm of her hand with a dagger. He used her blood to draw a mark above her heart, just above the neck of her dress. "So did you kill Jace by stabbing him through the heart?" he asked.
Aquaria nodded. "Yes."

Garin stepped forward to take the man out. How dare he cut her!

Sanvi put a restraining hand on Garin's shoulder to calm him.
The demon didn't look surprised by Garin's reaction. He continued questioning Aquaria. "And did Jace name Sanvi as his successor?"
"That's what she told me," Aquaria answered.
The demon slapped Aquaria. "Answer yes or no," he ordered.

Garin pulled out of Sanvi's hold and grabbed the demon by the neck. "Yes, and if you lay a hand on her again, I will tear you apart."

The demon moved Aquaria back from him.
Sanvi offered him her hand. "Test me next, if you are unsure," she said, calmly. The demons did the same thing to her that they did to Aquaria. "Did Jace name you as his successor?"
"Yes, he did," Sanvi answered.
Aquaria pulled back from the demons and tried to stop the bleeding in her hand.
