3.14 LunaInverse hilaroma Ashram McDuck I HAVE RETURNED FROM MY CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TOKYO TRIP!! scream I shall share the contents thereof ... but first I'm going to go get something to eat and hopefully rent the other DVDs of the original Gundam. NOTE 1 :: Skizz, I'm sorry to report that the high quality Enki was nowhere to be found. sad I'm going to try my local shop tomorrow but you may want to consider online purchase. NOTE 2 :: Hila ... the line is still there ... it's STILL over an one hour wait to get doughnuts. And they've been open for almost a year now... rofl Luna: They're only Krispy Kremes. People wait in line for over an hour just to get Krispy Kremes in Japan? Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Krispy Kremes are what people make them out to be. Yes, they're good doughnuts, but not worth waiting in a line that long. I don't even like them that much. Yes, they rock when you get them right out of the oven--but it's rare you ever get them like that.I've been told that nuking em for about 10 seconds helps bring back a lot of that fresh-from-the-oven taste, but I was still distinctly underwhelmed. I thought that Dunkin Donuts was better, but then I prefer cake donuts to fried donuts.

They've got a sour cream cake donut that kicks serious a**, and their seasonals are pretty crazy.

Jersey people and DD are scary. There are places where there are literally two Dunkin' Donuts a block away. Both are packed routinely.
What the gay.
As for the gingerbread donut - I preferred the pumpkin one. But that's just me.

Streamjumper Shoujo Phoenix In a nutshell, it feels like anything I do is never enough for my family neutral Basically, yes. I'm gonna dish out the story now. Keep in mind that I really love my family, I'm close to my mom and my aunt and what they say and have said I take to heart because in my life, they've offered a lot of good words for me and because of that is why I was so hurt by what happened yesterday.
I was in the car with my aunt and she was talking about my brother and this big test he had just taken. She went on about how it was a lot of material to absorb and how if he didn't pass, it would be ok and how in a way, she expected it. She said how failing wouldn't be that bad because at least he tried and gave it a shot as opposed to hiding from it and not even trying at all. She said how you can learn from failing and stuff like that, so I thought it may be a good opportunity to explain about some of my GRE scores.
I mentioned before in here that I recently found that passing one of the three parts of the GRE is acceptable for a state college masters program and how I could waive the subject GRE.
Well, I started to go on about that and was immediately accused of inadequate preparation just because I did not get a book. Reasons; any time I ask my mom for any money school-related, she has a way of making me feel guilty. Hell, I feel like s**t every time she dishes out tuition and stuff. Yes, I am aware that my parents do not have to pay for me, but my dad always said and has said recently that he would support me and my brother through our education. I'm also at a state college after a year and a half at a community college; not at a UC and not having to pay for housing. tl;dr - I didn't want to ask her for $30 for a book.
What I did instead was use the preparation tools sent to me by ETS and used the internet as my preparation tool. I looked up articles about how people passed theirs, what they can do to prepare, and any free tools offered. Despite all this, no one seems to believe I put any effort in, therefore wasted the $150 the test costs.
Back to the car story, she barraged me with questions in a very harsh Dr. Laura-like way, accused me of not studying enough, wasting my mom's money, and then asked if it was the general GRE. I told her yes, and she told me very bluntly that it is easy, how she passed on her first try without studying so obviously, I have no excuse. Then she sucked any encouragement and excitement out of me by stating basically I wouldn't get into any program with shitty scores and grades like I have.
...who says that? That really hurt me. A lot. After that, I was short and tried to end the conversation to prevent myself from breaking down. I mean, come on. She didn't have to condescend to me like that. All I ever ******** wanted was some support from my family because I sure as hell was sad and somewhat disappointed that I didn't pass either but I figured I could learn from the experience, no big deal, and give it another go. Also, take into mind that my aunt went to Pepperdine straight out of high school, skipped a grade in school, and absorbs books really fast. Of course her vocabulary is a bazillion times what mine is, but I'm not going to say I have no depth in my vocabulary. It's damn good enough to get me As on papers. Why do I need to know and use words like pulchritudinous or voracious?
"At least two sections of the GRE, analogies and antonyms, depend largely on the test-taker's knowledge of vocabulary."
What do I do to prepare besides memorizing the dictionary? I went the route of trying to take apart words or recognize words I do know and either use or eliminate the answer. I went the strategy route. If it were just me, I would be disappointed I didn't pass, but I wouldn't beat myself into the ground about it. I would just try a different study strategy and try it again. I'm not sure these tests are designed to be passed on the first shot. Also, take into consideration I never took any of the high school general tests like the SAT, SAT2, ACT, etc. I don't know what these tests will actually be like, so here I am at 21 trying something new.
What also really got to me was the fact that moments before, she was talking about how it would be ok if my brother failed the test the first time around...just because he was bought a preparation book and studied with my aunt. I may not have bought a damn book, but I tried my hardest without one. Besides, who are they to tell me I didn't study? They're not here. I ******** am.
A little about my brother: he's 23 and barely done with undergrad. He finished his BA last year in music therapy but hasn't done much about progressing through school since. Finally, he took that one test and is applying for a certain program. So basically, we're at the same point education-wise and I'm 2 years younger. I'm basically done with my degree (need one more class next semester) and I'm preparing to go on with education at this point. I've saved my parents a couple years worth of tuition, books, and gas. That roughly adds up to 10k. $300 extra dollars as opposed to $10,000...hmm, tough one.
My aunt and my mom are extremely close. My mom listens to what my aunt has to say so it's difficult to get them to not think alike. I love them both and they both mean a lot to me, but if I disagree with something, at least I'll listen to what they say and try to discuss it from there. I've matured in that area in the past few years. If you're not willing to be open to listen, then what's the point? Anyway, I think where they're coming from is that when I was younger, I didn't like studying and basically got away with it. In a way, I still do, but at this point, I do study. If I have a test in a class, I will study. Ask Marni and she'll say the same thing because she's actually here to witness me putting hours into studying or into homework. I'm not the same person that I used to be. I think in their minds, I still am.
I tried talking to my mom a little, but she told me (in a little nicer and compassionate way) that I didn't study (again, claiming something about me they can't be 100% sure about since neither are here) and how it was a waste of money and how she has to work so hard for it etc.
What am I supposed to really say at this point. If money is the big issue (and money really isn't a huge huge issue) then I'll get a ******** loan to cover the costs of my tests, but a little support in there would be lovely.
What I thought about further yesterday is that no one in my family seems to be proud of anything I do. I believe I will get on the Dean's list this semester. That would make 3 out of 4 semesters that I've gotten it. Is anyone proud? Not really. On the analytical writing on the GRE, I got in the 73rd percentile. Does anyone care or congratulate me? No. They hyper focus in on the other things I didn't pass and failed at. My GPA is above a 3.0 for once in my ******** life...but does anyone say they're proud? Not really. I fail at one stupid test and I get condescended to and made to feel like a real idiot for not passing.
I thought family was supposed to support you but I guess not.

Shouj', that's extremely shitty and cruel of your aunt. I mean, I understand family having certain expectations of you, but going on like that is just downright mean.
Personally, I think you're probably one of the most intelligent individuals that I know. I think what you've done so far in your school career is nothing short of amazing, and I know you're only going to continue to move forward. You will always have people here that are insanely proud of you.

Shouj, simple answer: when you graduate, don't send an invitation to your aunt. She clearly isn't interested enough in your school life to find anything out on her own, so she'd be unlikely to be interested in your completing it years ahead of her little star scholar and his inability to pass the test with her tutoring... while you complete enough of it to get into the program you want.
Oh, and be sure to make sure she finds out in detail about you making it into the program that she has TOLD you that you won't be getting into.
Where's your dad's position in the middle of all this bullshit negativity?
