What I have to know going in there? What do I have to do? What should I know? The ins and outs, how much time it's going to consume. If I can actually do it, etc.

I worked with my brother in law trying to get into modeling. He was going after the A&F look, so I don't know if you're in a similar boat or want to do something different. It's a hard business to get into, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work out.
First off you want to get some test shots of yourself. Check out onemodelplace.com and see if there are any photographers around your area that do TFP. Don't pay for test shots, as you can find probably 10 or more photogs that will do it for free. Check out their work and see if you like it. After that, show them to me and I'll give you more tips.

Well, some things are useful at the schools they have, like learning how to walk a runway and apply makeup, if you're into that But dont pay for headshots or to have a portfolio done. You shouldnt have to pay to model. You should be paid.

My little sister's been through two modeling things. She had an agency in fifth grade that did $200 classes and got her one audition in two years.
Now she's with John Robert Powers and she's been in a few classes that she hates, and so far it's cost my parents $2k. They haven't gotten her an audition as far as I know and it's been a year.
BUT, I am not the model in my family, so I wouldn't know if that's typical or not.
I believe her first agency did her headshot for free and helped write her resume.

Katie's pretty much right: if you have to pay to model, something's wrong. I've never asked for payment from a model, nor have I paid a model. Unless you're doing a contract job, you shouldn't pay a dime.
Since you're now at CSULB, go check out their art dept. and talk to a photography prof. See if they're in need of models for their higher-end photography classes. Work out a way to be a model and get copies of the shots made. A friend from high school was in the Cal Poly photography dept. and he would regularly fly to New York to do test shoots with some pretty major players. Getting free shots from him (or someone like him at CSULB) would be sweet.

I managed to lop a tiny bit of the tip of my index finger off at work on Friday. I had my finger-meats exposed, it was very icky. I put some of that Liquid Bandage crap on it so I could keep working... Sweet Mary, Mother of Jesus, does that s**t sting!
Other than that, I might be moving to North Carolina in the coming year.

So tired. I shopped all day yesterday, and then hit up the club last night, in the HOTTEST pair of shoes ever. Yuuuup. I got in at like 4 am. I had a really good night. Like a REALLY good night.
I almost managed to get 80% on my first psych paper, and my abnormal psych test was the first psych test, that I've ever written, and answered ALL the questions on it. Fun times. I'm just hoping that I passed it.

Thanks for all the modeling advice. I'm going to check out the art department here and see if they might need someone.
Just by observation I would imagine you don't have to be any type of magazine pretty to be a model, just what they're looking for. If they need someone fat, well?
I think it would be cool to model for Mervyns or Target or something.

It's true that plus-sized models have become very desirable (read profitable), but the main thing is that you have to be attractive. A 180lbs Heidi Klum is good, a 250lbs pockfaced shlobo isn't.
