There are tons of guy clarinetists. There were a lot in my high school band, and in my orchestra in college there are some. =P
Anyone here play in college already? I'm a sophomore in my wind ensemble studying music ed.
I have an oboe! I have yet to play it though because I haven't bought reeds for it yet. sweatdrop

There are plenty of guy clarinets in the world. If you ever need inspiration look to famous male clarinets like Benny Goodman, and more recently, Eddie Daniels. 3nodding

Used ones go for about 400-800 dollars.

Cpt. Greylag Des_Omon Hi clarinetists, my friend plays the clarinet and she has trouble with her high notes. The note are high b,c,d, and above. Its an octave above the "jump". er are those the ones that are fingered as low E, F and G [with ALL fingers down] ? well I think it can apply to both octaves, whichever it was, anyways I would suggest loosening the jaw a bit, having firm side muscles and opening up the throat, also to be sude to have a steady stream of air, another way of helping is moving yourself down a bit when you play the notes, it helps. Either that or longtones biggrin D <3 I haven't been here for a while -_O; I NEED HELP!!!!!!!
=/ My teacher doesn't want me to play weber's first clarinet concerto for chamber music, after all, I'm only 13 and I've never done a solo infront of many people [actually I've done it three times infront of a family party...twas LARGE!!!!!] its sensible, plus its a bit beyond my reach. It makes more sense to do Mozart's Clarinet Concerto [the second movement] which apparently I do so well [well if it got me to the top orchestra in third chair in all regionals then yeah [[I think i could've been higher if it wasn't for sight reading gonk : ]....last year was horrible, I couldn't play at all, not even an alternate  ;rofl: ]
but I can't interpret mozart into what I want it to be, what I want to say, I've had a HUGE pang of regret for something, I think mozart isn't a song of regret. I'd rather play a song I can truly play from my heart [well understand clearly at the moment] and enjoy it. Though the consequence is to play it from my heart and screw up too.
But I really would commit myself, do techniques that apply to it, repetition, everything. I didn't want to get my teacher mad last week so I didn't tell him, but should I talk to him about it? =/ either that or find a way to 'read' mozart again?

Nevira Shadowfire MiyokoxClarinetti Nevira Shadowfire SilverTsuki Woo!
My band is about to go to UIL, and we're going to $&^# it all up. xD UIL? What's that? Oh, wait! I know! Unicycle Instruction League xd rofl *runs* rofl rofl United Instruments League!!!!!!!!! O____________________O; uhhhhhhhh so anyways DD: DON'T KILL MEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! gaspiness x_x; I thought I wasn't so busy this week, turns out I still am ;_; a jillion tests, all these grammar exercises, art stuff... emo Band has being going great [ignoring all state...for Istill get the giggles when playing "hambone"] we have a competition at Ming Hall [a hall at cal state ful.] X_X FIRST to go up, at 8 am [I don't mind, its just that we're one of teh only two middle school groups there....which scares me.......] my clarinet seems to disagree with me, for the past month dear Chihiro has been acting up o_O;. I think its the reeds, or maybe its lack of long tones? =/ I be confuzzled............... back to practicing biggrin Don't worry Miyoko! I'm not going to kill you, I was having a bit of fun cool It's probably the weather affecting your clarinet. Here we've had snow, sleet, ice, all that fudge stuck on the ground for about a week and then it all melted in one day last Friday and now we're looking at more frozen stuff at the end of the week. Needless to say, it's been wreaking havoc on temperature-affected instruments. 3nodding Looks like for contest/concert we're playing "Chants Long Forgotten" by Roland Barrett (awesome piece! Fearless Leader wrote the molto ritard at the end! blaugh ) and if Fearless Leader decides it, "Jubiloso" by David Whatsisname (and there's nothing jubilant about it scream stressed ) and something else yet to be decided. I almost thought you said overture jubioloso by Frank Erickson rofl we played that for our christmas concert, twas fun biggrin We're doing this song in our clarinet choir called Motet. It looks easy but who knows....I wanted to do mozart or one of the other songs I have in my clarinet book [i have one for three clarinets biggrin ]

angel_the_silent can someone tell me how many guy clarinets there are out there ? cause well... sweatdrop i don't wanna be the only one crying Well, I've seen about 4 in my band. one is a sax/clarinetist and is now in 10th grade, one is a sax/bass clarinet player who is in 9th grade, and two are in 7th grade, although I think the one quit. And that's just in my band, so you're definitely not alone.

Well, your teacher is probably a good clarinetist and really knows what he is doing. He has had many more years of experience than you. But you have heard yourself play a lot more often than he has, and you know what you can handle in terms of music. If you think you would be able to play Weber's concerto, go for it! Even if something bad happens (which is extremely unlikely with your kind of dedication,) it's not the end of your musical career. You're in 8th grade. You have a good amount of time to practice and stuff before you go to college or whatever. (Disclaimer: This is my opinion, not law, so...)
