I've played second edition L5R before but as pre-gens. I'm more familiar with the card game so I'll need help with character creation.

So basically what you're saying what's available is:

A witch hunter (well that tends to be the Kaiu shugenja)
A ninja (or yojimbo) unless you're allowing the Dark Sword of Bitter Lies
A political ninja/underhanded magistrate
You'll need to explain the hare to me. I'm not familiar with the minor clans.

If it's in one of the books I have, you can play it, within limits of reason. I'll let you know if something is unreasonable. Such as nonhuman characters, or peasants.

Oh no! That list is what the current players are.

We have the Crab, Kaiu Kagae of the Kaiu Engineering School played by Mongooseh

We have the Scorpions Bayushi Kojiro and Shosuro Miyako played by myself and Tei Kae.

We have the Hare Clan member Usagi Denbe, played by Psychofish.

Finally, although not present for this chapter, we have a Dragon Tamori Shugenja played by Paidi tou Selini.

We're using the 3rd Edition Revised version of L5r which can be snagged from Drivethru.

Do you have any clan leanings in the card game?

In the card game I lean towards the Lion clan, particularly the Matsu family.

Well, that's a good starting point. TBH, we have a lack of damage dealers among us currently.

The best advice I can give is to take a look back among the first few pages of the OOC thread and read the intro blurbs that the GM, Rain gave out. They're very informative and useful!

Well, the best way to start learning the tabletop game, if you're not familiar with it, is probably going to be either to get the book (which you can purchase online like Plains said, or I can help you find a copy if the money is a problem) and start learning the mechanics and such, or to go through the how-to's and basics stuff Rain has posted.

...unfortunately while half of that has threads, I think the other half is recorded randomly among the first two dozen pages of the OOC?

I imagine the Card Game is at least very similar fluff wise, though I've never played it, so that ought to help.

We could probably use to have someone construct a "The Story Thus Far" thing somewhere, too. Partly because those are fun, and partly because we're about to have two new players, even if Selini has just finished reading all of Act II.

The card game tends to be a lot of the basis for the fluff (special tournaments are held where winners have various effects on the story.) The basic ways in which the various events unfold depend on the outcome of these tournaments.

However instead of each clan with it's schools there are certain "keywords" which play off of certain tactical types for example:

Hero: Basically a big strong attack build with a lot of counter control.
Commander: A character build that's really good with minions
Magistrate: A more politically oriented build which dishonors an opponents characters and shafts them for it.

Usually though what works best for me learning a tabletop game is diving head first. I do thoroughly memorize the rulebooks when I have them but certain things don't "click" until I start playing.

I take it Denbe isn't going to be able to get that no-dachi reforged anytime soon- in which case he's likely to try to snap it or something so a random brigand can't find it again, and get rid of the bits.

I'm kind of wincing and trying to think of ways Denbe might respond to that other than trying to bodily drag Kagae back to the camp or grabbing his things and storming off in the direction of their mission.
