It seemed that everyone was bewildered at Miyuki's actions: none of them had seen something so randomly vindictive before.
Amalirahc was wiggling in Leyenda's arms, still wailing that it was cold, and she and Kelirahc were trying to calm him down. Still, it seemed that they would have to take him inside and warm him up and change his clothes ... but they would wait until Miyuki was out of sight, so that he wouldn't get upset again.
As for Earendil, he didn't know what to do. Part of him wanted to go after Lin and Miyuki, but he knew that Miyuki loved playing with him, and his presence wouldn't help anything.
"I guess I'll see you later?" he asked Lin before she went anywhere.

Lin nodded at him, "I'll see you later."
She took Miyuki back inside and up the stairs to her room where she could be out of sight from everyone, especially Amalirahc. Lin had a rough idea what had caused it, but she didn't really understand was why. Probably because she found it more bizarre that Miyuki didn't cry when the tower was destroyed in the first place.
Actually now that she thought of it, Miyuki never cried, not even to get her way. Maybe she didn't know how, and not knowing how caused her to take it out on Amalirahc. Whatever the case it wasn't right.
She took off Miyuki's cloak and placed the girl in a corner.
"Stay," Lin told Miyuki firmly, "Ten minutes, even if you can't understand me, I know you're bright enough to know after this you did something wrong."
She had to be to even think about taking revenge against Amalirahc. Though this was going to be a long ten minutes, for the both of them.

Once Lin was inside, Leyenda and Kelirahc waited a bit before following, leaving Earendil and Haldia outside in the snow, which was again getting thicker.
Once inside, they undressed him, bathed him in warm water, dried him off, and put clean clothes on him, all of which probably took the ten minutes that Miyuki was supposed to sit in the corner.

It had maybe taken the fourth or maybe fifth try before Miyuki got the clue that she was supposed to stay in that corner. That was the nice thing about dealing with young children, ten minutes was a very long time. Lin had taken to laying on her bed reading a parenting book of all things while waiting.
Lin thought she should be grateful, at least Miyuki didn't try and bite the boy. She read that children could do that, apparently parenting was a dangerous job. Shutting the book, she sighed a bit. Niki was right, she should throw the damn thing away, it was pretty useless in this case.
"Alright kiddo," Lin murmured dumping the book on the bed as she walked over to Miyuki and picking her up, "Time out is over."
Miyuki of course was not a happy camper. She had been bored, upset and while she understood it was wrong, she didn't quite understand why. She just gave her mother an upset look.
"If you were upset about him crushing the tower why couldn't you cry like a normal kid?" Lin asked her knowing full well Miyuki probably didn't understand most of it.
She knew that Miyuki had been upset, and she was still upset, but she did not cry. Maybe her child was repressed... Lin shook her head as she carried Miyuki out of her room.

Amalirahc was playing in the playroom when Lin and Miyuki came downstairs, and Kelirahc was keeping an eye on him while Leyenda helped Haradhel out in the kitchen.
Kelirahc looked up when he heard Lin coming down the stairs, and he called out, "All taken care of?"

"Hopefully," Lin replied, "It's hard to tell when they have no vocabulary to speak of."
So she never knew how much Miyuki understood her, but at least Lin hoped the method of action and consequence would fix it. She set Miyuki down.

"Come to think of it," Kelirahc noted, watching Amalirahc carefully for his reaction to seeing Miyuki again, "I don't think I've ever heard her even trying to speak yet."
Amalirahc smiled at Miyuki, the incident already forgotten, and offered her one of the blocks he was playing with.

Miyuki on the other hand shied away from Amalirahc, instead clinging to her mother's leg. The one furthest from the boy, since she had just been out of time out, she hadn't forgotten. In her little mind, it was his fault really, but doing anything was a no-no.
Lin mused thoughtfully, hoping she didn't just create more problems than there were from that time out.
"I don't know, I don't know if she's adjusting to not being a baby anymore or if it's something else. My two brothers were mute for a while and all Miyu use to say was 'mi' so I'm not overly worried quite yet."

Kelirahc nodded. "And I understand that it is quite common for some children not to speak at all until they speak fully," he murmured. "They do not all begin with baby words."
He watched Miyuki curiously. "One would think Amalirahc would be the one who is unforgiving, not the one who performed the misdeed."

Lin sighed, she figured it was too good to be true that Miyuki would understand what was going on.
"She doesn't get it," Lin murmured, "I think she was unhappy that Amalirahc accidentally crushed that snow tower. Instead of crying or throwing a temper like most children, she decided to throw snow on him. So I don't know what's going through her head now with the time out."

"Ah," Kelirahc murmured. "I understand. But he did not mean to crush the tower, it was an accident ... though I suppose we cannot expect Miyuki to understand what that means."
He looked down at Amalirahc, who had gone back to playing with the blocks, stacking one atop another.

"She'll get over it," Lin murmured ruffling Miyuki's hair.
She hoped it was true what they said about children and short attention spans. Though Lin never remembered her attention span ever being short. Of course maybe she just had a bad memory.
Lin decided she was tired of Miyuki sulking, "Where's Earendil?"
Magic words, Miyuki blinked, looked around and then zoomed off to look for him. Really Lin should not encourage it, but if it triggered that infamous short attention span she would deal with it.
"I should be worried how quickly she went to find him."

Kelirahc chuckled softly, watching as Miyuki disappeared so suddenly.
"Well, to be fair," he grinned, "Earendil is just as fond of her as she is of him. Forgive me if I am speaking out of place, but he seems almost to have become like something of a father figure for her."
He smiled at Lin. "As for where he is, he and Haldia were left outside when we all came in, and since they had no idea how long Miyuki's punishment was going to last, I believe they went for a walk together."

Lin's heart stopped for a moment, a feeling that she mercilessly squashed down. This was a good thing she told herself, they were going for a walk, maybe Haldia won't leave at the end of winter, maybe Earendil will fess up and they'll...
Somehow that didn't sound all that exciting as she was trying to make it sound in her head.
"Ah... that's good," Lin smiled.
Miyuki came pattering back in and she gave her mother a quivering pout. She couldn't find Earendil at all.
"He'll be back soon," Lin told Miyuki, not sure how much she understood.

"Probably," Kelirahc agreed, not quite paying attention to just who Lin was talking to.
Amalirahc looked up at Miyuki as she came back into the room. He had already forgotten that she had shied away from him the first time he had offered her some toys, and he climbed to his feet, his hands full of blocks, and wandered over to her.
"B'ock!" he told her with a smile, holding some of the blocks out to her. "B'ock ... Ki. Ki."
It was the best he could do, trying to say her name.
