Then, the battle really began.

As Daemyn finished up his howl, a reddish glow permeated from his body, showing that his attack power had increased; Randy, however, seeing an opening, quickly shouted, "Abby! Use Scratch!"

Claws glowing, the young Absol raced towards Daemyn, sending a sharp blow to the side of his head. The Houndour yelped, sliding back a bit and cocking his head the opposite direction, trying to get his bearings again. That's mean! M.A. thought, looking at Abby; but this was a battle, after all, so it wasn't uncalled for or anything. "Shake it off, Daemyn; you're good, you're good! Use Ember!" She meant good as in alright, but it worked as a confidence boost, too.

The puppy, clenching his jaws down as if controlling the flames to the very right second, threw back his head then thrust forth a decent-sized ball of fire. It hit Abby squarely, singing the white fur but not inflicting a terrible burn. Absol growled menacingly, and Daemyn could feel the sweat under his fur; this pressure from this Pokemon was hard to take. However, he wouldn't lose; definately not!

The Absol was silently, quickly, and entirely obedient to every one of Randy's order; the boy himself was a pretty good trainer, too, at least in M.A.'s eyes.

"Abby! Scratch!"

Oh, schnap, Daemyn can't dodge it that close. "Lessen it with leer!" The Houndour glared at the Absol right before its attack, causing it to hesitate and lose a chunk of its original power. However, the attack still struck home, and Daemyn still took a hefty blow; this Absol was strong, alright, in regards to its attack strength.

"Hurry, ember!" M.A. hoped to take advantage of that moment where the Absol was a bit off balance after having hit Houndour. Randy, though, countered immediately, calling out, "Abby, quick attack!"

The Absol disappeared from view with its speed, safely dodging the Houndour's attack and tackling it in the side. Daemyn spun on the ground. He got up hastily, though, to have M.A. know that he was far from done; this particular puppy had quite a bit of endurance, and mixed with that stubborn attitude, he wouldn't stop trying 'till he and M.A. were the victorious ones.

"A Squirtle huh? You must have visted the Professor. Doesn't matter, Wings use Sand Attack!" The young boy comanded hoping that would help lower the accuracy of it's water gun so it couldn't hit Wings in the air. The small yet feirce Spearow cave a cry as it started to beat its small wings rapidly kicking up a bunch of dust.

Luckily for Toph she couldnt see the target in the first place. "Storm get into your shell and wait for the dust to pass." She comanded the small turtle. Immediatly Storm obeyed tucking himself inside his shell and letting the sand fly around him. After a moment the sand died down and Storm poked his head out of his shell, seeing that it was safe he came out all the way.

The boy across from them simply frowned befor crossing his arms across his chest. "Wings use Fury Attack quickly befor it ducks back into its shell." The small Spearow did just that taking off quickly towards the water pokemon and befor Storm could do anything started pecking at the Squirtles head feircely.

"Storm use Bite." Toph yelled at her pokemon hoping that since the bird pokemon was close, she hoped it was anyway, that her pokemon would be able to pull off that attack. Good thing for her was that her assumption was correct and the Spearow was rather close. Hearing the comand Storm opened his mouth and clamped it down hard on the Spearows leg causing it to squack indignitly at him and flap around and peck at him some more in an attempt to get out of the hold.

Another fiery shot sent Absol sliding a good distance back. The battle, at the time, was pretty much a draw -- neither Abby nor Daemyn could get an upperhand on the other, and both were landing blows that they couldn't handle for too much longer.

Daemyn panted, waiting for M.A. to give him a command; Abby seemed to do the same with Randy. Both trainers, however, were racking their minds for a good combination that could end the battle for good. Meanwhile, the rest of the Winstrates were sitting on a picnic blanket nearby, enjoying the battle and an after-lunch tea.

Everytime that Houndour leers at Abby, his attack drops, and it's been going down bit by bit -- then, that mutt howls, and /his/ attack goes up. Not good. But I've got a way to stop this! Randy thought furiously. "Abby, use taunt!" The Absol swung his head around, pawing the ground boredly, as if stating that Daemyn was nothing; at the same time, however, it kept eye contact, daring the pup to make a move.

It worked; Daemyn would attack directly from then on -- however, he was also pretty pissed, and that made him more vicious in battle. "Ember!" M.A. shouted, and Houndour consented immediately. Without stopping, he continued to collect fireball after fireball in his mouth, aiming them at the Absol roughly with only a short interval in between shots. With Houndour firing so much by using the last of his reserves, Randy's Absol could hardly find a way to get close without getting hit. And so, he kept using quick attack to avoid as many shots as possible, but anyone could see that he couldn't keep that up much longer -- neither could Daemyn, however.

Randy yelled, "See if you can get to him, Abby! Use one last Scratch, and we'll be there!"

M.A. grit her teeth. "Keep it going, Daemyn!"

The Absol recklessly ran towards Houndour, taking the shots full-on but charging on nevertheless. He couldn't let Randy down, no. . . And, to Daemyn's surprise, he had broken through the last ember, sending a crashing blow to the Houndour with his sharp claws.

Both Pokemon fell hard, sending up a cloud of dust. It cleared shortly, though, revealing Houndour on the ground and Absol standing up shakily. It looked as if Abby had won, but. . .

In just a moment, the Absol fell to the ground, finally feeling the effect of all those attacks he had taken just to get to Daemyn -- he was knocked-out at last. The little houndour, however, propped himself up, panting with a lopsided grin when he saw the Absol before him. Then, with a hoarse howl that sounded like a laugh, he hollered to the sky that he, Daemyn, had won his very first trainer battle!

"Abby!" Randy cried, the little boy's short legs pounding to the side of his Pokemon. "Good job, girl. I'm real proud of you," he murmured to the Absol, recalling it with a Pokeball. "Take a rest, okay?"

M.A. smiled, picking up Houndour and spinning him around once then crushing him in a proud embrace. "Bravo, Daemyn! You did great." Then, glancing at Randy a little guiltily -- she didn't know why, really -- and wondered what trainers should say after a battle. Well, actually, she kinda knew, but what she should say to Randy was a totally different question. Would he get mad if I told him that was a good battle? Or should I saw his Absol was so strong? Or. . .

"That was a pretty good battle for a wimpy girl and a mutt," Randy called out, having already started to walk back into the house. However, he raised an arm and gave them a thumbs-up, turning his head just a tiny bit and grinning. "You better come back soon, so we can have a rematch. Me and Abby'll both be way stronger, you won't stand a chance!"

"Y-yeah!" M.A. stuttered, smiling that 1000-watt smile of hers. "We'll be stronger, too! Better be ready, okay?"

The other Winstrates grinned as well. They universally liked this girl.

The Gym Leader and Rocket Head had already began compiling his paper work, slipping sheets into the records of victories and Rocket members. He was about to put Mai's folder away when there was a knock at the door. The man snapped his fingers, and the door swung open to reveal the female Rocket. Giovanni smiled warmly (something a Team Rocket member had never seen) and stood up, sliding Mai's folder away and walking over to her. "Mai. To what do I owe the pleasure?" the leader raised an eyebrow and looked down at her from the tip of his nose.

As he was saying this, a Rocket Guard pushed passed Mai with a Pokeball in his hand. "Here you are, Giovanni, sir." The Guard looked at Mai with a scowl as the Rocket Leader took the ball.

"Ah, so she agreed?" Giovanni placed the ball onto his belt and waved his hand loosely to dismiss the Guard.

"Now then, Mai? May I help you?" he asked, placing a hand on her back and pulling her into his office. He closed the door behind her, held out his hand to a chair and took his seat behind his desk.

The boy had nearly dozed off listening to the sound of the people talking. Their soft murmurs slowly easing him into a dreamland. However, there was a sudden and very loud ringing, followed by a vibration against his leg. Kilik's eyes shot open and he dug into his pocket for the ringing PokeNav. It was shaking in his hands due to the vibration. When he opened the orange flap, he read the name that appeared on the small screen.
Nina
This flickered many times with each ring and he hesitated for a moment. Slowly, he pressed the blue TALK button and held it up to his ear. "Hello?" he mumbled.

"That's some Houndour you've got there, missy," Mr. Winstrate had said, patting the pup (although Daemyn didn't appreciate it one bit, and might've bitten his hand too, if M.A. hadn't seen this and pulled him away hastily). "With Absol's Pressure, I was sure he'd run out of attack PP pretty quickly, and I think he did -- but he struggled on brilliantly anyway, and ultimately won, am I correct?"

"Quite right, dear," Mrs. Winstrate had chimed in. Our former theory of his being used to family agreeing with him was supported just then.

"Well, I'll take you pass those boulders, now, Mary-Anne. Let's go, shall we?"

Mrs. Winstrate and her daughters chimed that they'd love her to come back soon. The eldest, named Teresa, had taken quite a liking to Mary-Anne and had promised to call if she found any new Pokemon food recipes (of which they had been chatting amiably about before the match during lunch). "Good thinking, Teresa!" Mr. Winstrate boomed, voluntarily taking M.A.'s orange PokeNav out of her hands and quickly entering their house number. "There! Come by anytime." Mary-Anne could only laugh and agree heartily; even if the jolly old man was a bit over-powering, she liked him anyway.

The smallest daughter had offered Houndour some berries, to replenish some energy -- she had noted that he didn't look like he'd make it through the short trip to Mauville from there. Mary-Anne thought so as well, and had him return to his Pokeball for the first time in her journey so far. "Rest up a bit in there, alright? We'll be there soon." Daemyn didn't resist, as he had done back in the beginning; maybe it was that he had gotten over his distate for the limited space within a Pokeball, or perhaps it was just that new-found connection he had with M.A. Then again, he could've just been tired, too.

After a particularily nasty peck to the head Storm finally let go and the Spearow flew up into the sky out of the reach of the pesky Squirtle. Storm now not being battered watched the flying pokemon carefully. "Storm, don't wait for it to recover use your Water Gun!" Toph yelled from the side lines. Storm jumped slightly at his trainer's yelling but did it anyway starting to fire off squirts or water up into the sky. The Spearow for its part dodged most of them expertly only getting a few clips on the wings.

"Wings use Peck!" The youngster comanded from his part of the arena. The Spearow gave a small cry befor diving down and delivering a quick peck on head befor flying back up.

Thinking for a moment Toph came up with an idea. "Storm use Bubble shoot it up make sure that the little birdie can't dodge it to." She said with a smirk directed at the youngster. Doing as Toph comanded Storm lifted his head and shot out a massive amount of bubbles into the air towards the Spearow, due to the large area the attack covered it didn't miss. At her feet Edge watched the battle running stratigies on how he would fight the airborn foe, Queeny was just watching the battle wondering when it would be her turn.

"Hey there," Mitsu said softly entering the room. The small girl, Mitsu still had yet to catch her name, was sitting beside a bed holding the Ralts' hand. She turned around to see the trainer from before along with her elegant Gardevior. "Hi," she mumbled looking down at the Ralts once more. Tears began to form in the corners of her eyes.

"H-hey don't do that," Mitsu said taking a seat next to her as well. "You don't need to cry."

"But he's hurt..." she said softly wiping a few tears from her face.

"He'll be fine. Nurse Joy even says so," Mitsu paused before going on, "You know, this exact same thing happened to me when I was a kid. Karri here," she motioned to the Gardevior, "was still a Ralts too. But if you don't wanna get picked on anymore you gotta get strong. The both of you." Karri seemed to be having her own converstaion with the young Pokemon, the two were smiling slightly.

The young girl nodded. "I have to get strong," she repeated.

"We," Mitsu corrected, "Not only you, but your Pokemon as well." She gave the girl a small smile.

"We," she repeated with a nother nod.

"Oh, I'm so stupid," Mitsu said, "I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Mitsu of Mossdeep and this is Karri my Gardevior."

"My name's Sakura. I'm from here Odale," she too smiled. It was a plesant change from her usual sad face.

The two girls sat there enjoying each other's silent company for a few moments until Mitsu began to speak once more, "Why don't we exchange Pokenav numbers?" Sakura looked down sadly. "I don't have one," she said. Mitsu grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled down her number.

"Mitsu we need to go," Karri said usuaing her usual mode of speak, telepathy, "We need to get as close to Lavaridge as possible before nightfall."

Somthing seemed off, but Mitsu didn't question it. "Looks like we have to get going Sakura. Gimme a ring if you need anything." She got up and stood facing the door. "Something to remember me by," Mitsu said placing the light green goggles on her head then quickly leaving the Pokemon Center on her Mach Bike racing towards her destination.

---

Sakura had fallen alseep once more. The nighttime air could be felt though the open window. A small piece of paper with numbers scribbled on it few outside carried off to who knows where by the soft breeze.

Nina was quiet for a moment and almost didn't speak. However, she finally managed to whisper out, "Kilik, hello. It's me, Nina... How... have you been?" Nina half expected Kilik to hang up on her before responding to her. She was prepared for almost anything, however.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:06 pm

His heart was pounding for two reasons. One, he was hoping to talk to her again and two, he was still a bit hurt from her words in Vermillion. Kilik looked to the side. "I've gotten along fine without you," he said into the phone. Over the phone line or in person, the boy's voice was very cold. The type of coldness in his voice was only heard twice before: both times he was part of Team Rocket.

"That's what you wanted, right?" the boy whispered harshly, "For me to stay out of your way?" Kilik's hand balled into a fist in his lap.

"Kilik, you know for a fact that I wasn't myself when I said those words to you," Nina said, talking normally now. "I'd never hurt you, and you know that too!"

The girl paused for a moment. "Listen," she continued, "we can talk about our personal issues at another time. Right now, there's something incredibly important that I need to tell you, if you're willing to listen."
PostPosted: Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:36 pm

Kilik paused for a minute then turned his body so that he was facing the cushion of his seat. The train was a good while away from Rustboro City, so he figured he'd pass the time by listening to what she had to say. His fingers fumbled for a moment against the hem of his pants. "Really? What?" he raised an eyebrow.

Nina exhaled before she spoke. "All right. It's going to sound terrible, but you have to believe me. I had a dream a little while ago, and in it there was a man who killed my birth parents using some freaking crazy Pokemon that looked like a Rhydon or something... Except, it wasn't a Rhydon, and it wasn't any Pokemon I'd ever seen before. Normally, I would have just dismissed that as just a nightmare or something, but it felt real. I mean, I know some dreams feel real to people, but this one was almost indescribably different." Nina cleared her throat.

"My point is, though," she continued, "that when I woke up, I was concerned that this was a premonition, so I talked to Oracle about it. She told me that the man in my dreams was a real person. He calls himself Maorde Menskr. Oracle said that's old Norse for 'Slayer of Humans.'" Nina continued to explain to Kilik how the Slayer had been alive for centuries, ages slower than other humans, and how in the past he had used his Pokemon to, for lack of a better word, slay others.
