The pair walked along for a little while, taking in the sites of the town. Cherrygrove was peaceful and quiet, and while it was a nice change of pace from their usual chaos and excitement, Kasiya and Shocker both quickly realized that there wasn't much to do here. I don't even see any trainers to battle,' the blonde thought, openly pouting as she plopped down on a bench. Shocker hopped up beside her, looking just as disappointed as her trainer. "Maybe we should have went to Goldenrod," Kasiya sighed, leaning back and closing her eyes. "At least we could have gone to the Department Store and looked around while we waited."

"Hey you, with the Raichu! You got a moment?" a voice called out, startling the girl and her Pokemon awake.

Unsure of how much time had passed, Kasiya sat up, blinking sleepily. An older man was standing nearby, and she guessed it was him that had called out to her. "Who, me?" she asked, pointing to herself. Shocker stood up, her long tail lashing about. The Raichu didn't like the looks of this guy!

The man folded his arms, narrowing his eyes at the girl. "Yes, you. Do you see anyone else with a Raichu around here?"

Kasiya's face flushed, and she glanced around quickly. "Well, no..." Meanwhile, sparks had started to flare from Shocker's cheeks.

"Young lady, tell your Pokemon to stand down," the man said, now moving closer. "All I wanted to ask is if you had the time."

Karrigan looked over at Damien as he released his Feebas, and it was plain to see that the Pokemon wasn't happy. Ugh, I can't watch, the redhead thought, looking away as the white light engulfed the fish. This isn't going to end well for him, I know it. She distanced herself from the dark-haired boy, deciding instead to focus on her own pending evolution. "All right, Aegeus, here we go," she said, holding the sphere against her chest before she tossed it to the ground.

The Pokeball burst open, the tremendous amount of light quickly spilling out and taking shape into the already-large Onix. Aegeus looked down at his trainer knowingly before looking skyward, the same bright glow overcoming him as the one that had engulfed Feebas. While the Onix didn't really get that much bigger, he did get a massive armor upgrade. He no longer had a horn protruding from the top of his head; now there were steely ridges. His jaws had grown more powerful, sporting razor-sharp teeth while several large, metal spikes were sticking out of various segments of his body. The newly-evolved Steelix slammed his tail against the ground and roared, and Karrigan stared up at Aegeus in amazement. "Incredible," she said, taking out her PokeDex and scanning him. "I can't wait to see you in battle." She looked over at Damien and his new Milotic, not surprised to see that she was showing his displeasure by shooting Water Guns at his head. As much as she wanted to say "I told you so", she bit her tongue and made her way over to him. "What are we going to do now?" she asked, once again admiring her tough-looking Steelix.

Aw, man, sleep is sooo annoying, Georgia thought irritably as she watched her sleeping Carnivine. He looked so peaceful, even after being assaulted by the Barrage and he continued to clutch the few eggs he'd ensnared with his Bind tightly, like odd little teddy bears. She looked up as her opponent called for an Uproar - she hadn't been expecting for something like that! It was gonna hurt, but at least it would wake Carnivine up! Sure enough, the sound waves did the trick, jolting the carnivorous plant awake, and he didn't look too happy about it, either!

"Okay then!" Georgia shouted, making a fist. "Carnivine, go get your supper! Use Bite attack on the biggest one!" Carnivine's sinister grin seemed to grow even wider as he drifted across the battlefield to to where the largest egg rested, giving a perfect view of his terribly sharp teeth as his maw gaped open, ready to chomp down on the egg-like Pokemon.

It was safe to assume that Keegan had not been aware of the repercussions of using Lava Plume inside a gym that had a primarily wood-themed decor until after the once-beautifully polished floor had become spotted with slowly-hardening sections of molten rock, and he winced, praying that Norman had good insurance. Regardless, the Lava Plume had been tremendously effective; the a Zangoose had taken a direct hit and been knocked out of the battle, but not before leaving its mark on Boris in the form of a rather disgusting Toxic hairball. The Camerupt lowed softly as the poison had already begun to work its way into his system, and Keegan frowned. Boris' time on the field would now be limited, and he and his badly-poisoned Pokemon looked on as Norman sent out his last Pokemon.

Oh god, is that what I think it is? Keegan thought, eyes wide as Norman sent out what had to be the largest Slaking he'd ever seen. Oh goody, it is what I think it is. The redhead glanced across the semi-ruined battlefield at Norman, and managed a smirk. "Hell, I hope not," he said, leaning back on a heel. "This is supposed to be a gym challenge, after all." Boris stomped a cloven foot in agreement, eager to continue. "Well, the gym's already busted up as it is, so there's no holding back now - Boris, Earth Power!"

The mighty Camerupt once again stomped his feet, this time causing the whole gym to shake. The ground seemed to explode out from under the cooled portions of lava, sending up bursts of dirt and rock in all directions. Keegan was aware that Slaking were near terrifyingly-powerful, but the fact that they were also known to be incredibly lazy helped to balance that out a bit. We got this, yeah, Keegan thought, still desperately wishing for a cigarette.
=====
The question posed by Professor Juniper had been a bit of a surprise to Miharu, and for an instant, the girl looked between the three PokeBalls and the kind woman that had already done so much for her. She opened her mouth to answer, but before she could get a single word out, one of the professor's aides had entered the laboratory.

"Professor Juniper!" he said breathlessly. "The new trainers - they're here!"

"Goodness, already?" Juniper checked her watch. "A bit early, but who can blame them? It is a big day, after all! All right, thank you, Ralph. Please send them in!"

Miharu's green eyes went wide and she took an involuntary step back as she was filled by a sudden rush of anxiety. She could already hear voices approaching the lab and without even realizing it, she'd started looking for places to hide. The professor must have sensed a shift in Miharu's mood, or had expected something like it as she'd moved over to stand beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. The gesture was almost instantly calming, and Miharu felt herself breathing a little easier as the new trainers entered the laboratory.
=====
Milotic may be upset now, but she'll come around, thought Damien to himself, glancing down at the PokeBall in his hand as Karrigan's Onix underwent its own transformation. The change wasn't quite as drastic as it had been with his Feebas, but the Steelix was downright impressive all on its own. Aegeus seemed rather pleased with himself, and even Karrigan was looking rather happy, both of which caused the bespectacled boy to frown, mostly out of jealousy. He attached Milotic's PokeBall to his belt and folded his arms as the redhead approached him, inquiring as to their next course of action and he almost scoffed: it wasn't like he had anything planned.

"I don't know," he said finally, removing his glasses and polishing the lenses carefully. "Didn't the professor say something about a Pokemon gym? We could always check it out. Or, we could make our way to Striaton City. I believe there is also a gym located there. I honestly don't care one way or the other."

Kasiya gave a disappointed sigh. "Actually, I don't, at least not at the moment. My PokeNav is being charged back at the Pokemon Center. Sorry about that," she said, placing a hand on Shocker's head. The Raichu, however, continued to glare at the man, still apparently unnerved by his presence.

The man's eyes narrowed, and he gave a slow nod. "Well then, that is rather unfortunate." He looked over at Shocker once again, and chuckled. "It seems that your Raichu is looking for a fight."

"Oh, uh, yeah," Kasiya laughed sheepishly, scratching the back of her head. "You'll have to forgive her. She's been through a lot recently and she hasn't really had a chance to go all out in a while." It wasn't an outright lie, but Kasiya knew that her beloved mouse was spoiling for a good fight.

The man nodded again. "I see, I see. I daresay that I might have just the opponent for her. That is, if the two of you are up for it." To show that he wasn't bluffing, he held up a Pokeball, and after a few seconds of studying it, Kasiya realized it was an older model of Pokeball - one of her father's gym trainers, Mr. Reid, had several just like it.

The blonde quickly glanced at her Raichu to see what she thought about having a battle with the older gentleman. Shocker had jumped down off the bench and was was now punching the air, sparks showering from her cheeks. Kasiya smiled, and nodded at the man. "Oh yeah, she's up for it," she said, already feeling the rush of pre-battle adrenaline. "By the way, my name's Kasiya! It's nice to meet you!"

The man inclined his head slightly. "I am called Albert. The pleasure is all mine." He flicked his wrist, and the old-style Pokeball spiraled to the ground in front of him. Both Kasiya and Shocker watched with eager anticipation over what Pokemon they'd be facing!

"So your cute little Bagon finally evolved, did she?" Lisa asked as she watched Jaeshan and the not-so cute and little Salamence rolling around in the grass, laughing and quite obviously enjoying their reunion. "Though I take it that she wasn't a Salamence when you last saw her?"

Jaeshan shook his head as he got to his feet, bits of grass falling from his clothing. "No, she wasn't. She was still Shelgon when I saw her last," he said, patting Salamence's head. "It's awesome that she's all fully-evolved now, but I gotta say that I am kinda bummed about missing her evolution." Salamence grunted and bumped him with a wing, causing the boy to stumble. "But the main thing is, we're together again! This is so awesome!" Something seemed to occur to Jaeshan then, and he looked to the blue-haired girl. "Say, why did you have Salamence's Pokeball? I thought that all of my Pokemon were staying at my parents' place back in, uh, Littletwig Town."

Lisa shifted uneasily on her feet, as that was a question she'd been hoping he wouldn't think to ask - at least not yet. "It's Littleroot Town," she corrected, smiling a bit wistfully - his memory was returning, yes, but clearly he still had quite a ways to go. "That's actually kind of a long story and I'm not really sure how to answer that," she said, now looking at the ground.

Jaeshan tilted his head curiously. "A long story?" he repeated, looking back at Salamence, then to Lisa again. "Just start at the beginning." He paused as another thought crossed his mind. "Wait, you didn't steal my Pokemon, did you?" he asked, taking a purposeful step forward. "I may not even remember how to spell my own last name, but I do know that I hate thieves. Tell me you didn't steal them, Lisa!"

Karrigan sighed and looked away from the dark-haired boy. Yeah, that's exactly the problem - you don't care! She ran her hands along Aegeus' smooth, cool body, still quite impressed by his sudden evolution. Damien had mentioned Striaton, and now that he did so, she also recalled that it had a Pokemon Gym. "I say we go to Striaton," she said quietly, nodding toward the road past the Pokemon Center. "Who knows, maybe we'll even meet up with Miharu again." Even though their new friend had expressed an extreme disinterest in capturing new Pokemon, Karrigan was confident that Professor Juniper would somehow be able to change her mind.

The redhead looked at her Steelix again, and then back to Damien. "But first, I say that you and I have another battle. The one we had back on the ship was so... restricted." Karrigan's green eyes were almost alight with mischief, but she returned to her shy, quiet smile rather quickly. "That is, unless you don't want to. We could always leave for Striaton City right now."

The Memory Experiment

“You!” Claire muffle-shouted as Mawile appeared in front of her. “You followed us all the way here? What’s your problem!” The blonde-haired girl exclaimed as she reached for Kokoro’s pokeball. The fire type appeared with a yawn but quickly flared up her flames when she saw the opponent before her. ’Is that an egg?’ She thought, noticing something in the pokemon’s false jaws. “Alright Koko, we’re going to teach this one a lesson. Heat things up with your Flame Wheel!” The Deceiver Pokemon was persistent, and that could be a useful trait to have in a Pokemon. 'If she’s so set on following us she might as well be the next new member to my team.’

Although the attack came flying in quickly, Mawile was ready. Kokoro missed the speedy steel type by a few inches as it dodged back under the desk. The blue and tan Volcano Pokemon turned around after going a few more feet down the hall. Noticing that the egg had not followed her opponent out of her hiding place, she quickly charged back in for a solid strike to the Mawile’s abdomen. Now that the Mawile was not preoccupied, she was ready to return the favor and lashed out with a strong Vicegrip, easily clamping down on the Quilava’s midsection.

Claire figured she was still on top in the true opening round. It looked like the Mawile was hurting from that last blow. Although she wasn’t sure, it seemed like it might be weak to fire type moves. “So long as she’s going to keep biting you, you might as well use Flame Wheel again.” More than happy to oblige, Kokoro let out a low growl as the flames burst from her pores once more, quickly engulfing both parties.

Riza called out for Faustus to dodge the oncoming Toxic, but the spray was just too wide and he couldn't fully escape it. The toxic liquid covered a large portion of his tail, hissing and smoldering as the toxins went to work, already starting to sap away his energy. The raven haired girl frowned but only for a second. If she was lucky, the Dragonair's special ability would kick in soon and he'd heal himself from the poison. For now, however, it was time to go on the offensive! "Faustus, use Dragon Rage!" Riza called, not wanting to give away Faustus' two very effective moves just yet. Trying not to show how much the poison was already hurting him, the Dragonair reared back, his ears fluttering as he loosed a stream of indigo flames at the Victreebel.

Katie had very nearly marched right out of the warehouse by the time Mai spoke up and she stopped with her hand on the door handle. She didn't have to look back at the Admin to know that she was grinning and the orange haired girl felt a surge of anger course through her. Mai was just trying to get to her, wasn't she? Katie spun around to face the older woman again, but her anger faded as she was given her next "mission", if it could really be called that. "You want me to...beat the gym leader?" she asked, obviously a bit surprised. "Is that even a real mission? Can you even ask me to do that?" Not that it was't something she wasn't planning to do already, but it seemed a little lame for a Team Rocket mission. However, she figured she'd already pissed Mai off enough for one day so it was probably best to just agree with her and move on. "All right, I'll do it. I'll beat the Veilstone gym leader and get her badge." She grinned then, having already been quite psyched for the upcoming battle, but she stopped, giving Mai a serious look. "Are you going to be there? Or do you have important admin stuff to do instead?"

So far Normans challenger had been unshakable. A good trait in a trainer, confidence and being assured if the trainer faltered at all it would spell doom no matter how assured victory was. It was a good thing then that Norman's Slaking was not only his strongest gym pokemon but also his most unnerving. "Slaking use Attract." Norman called out unable to hold back the small grin on his face as he carefully focused on something else in the room, even he didn't want to see this if he didn't have to.

On the field of battle the Slaking snorted as she heard her trainers commands, looking over at the large rampaging fire type she yawned as she felt the red beast crack the ground and send earth her way. Hmm, she almost felt that attack, maybe this strong pokemon was worth her attention, the kind of attention an attract warranted. Moving her large body up she rose to her full height and started to do that dance she had seen on the tv during that music video last week. This would surely attract this fire types attention, sealing the deal with a little wink and a blown kiss the Slaking settled down again and waited for her numorous charms to sink in. After all who could resist her? Grinning she recalled just how feisty fire types could be.

Dante was feeling pretty proud of himself as he crawled back in through the window, errant Turtwig and Axew in his arms. Of course he managed to catch a full eyeful of the 'alluring' dance the Slaking was doing. "Oh god I need to bleach my eyes." He muttered black eyes wide and unable to look away, almost like a car crash. "I hate you Keegan. I hate you so much." He called out a bit louder as he crashed down hard onto the floor his own muscles betraying him after seeing that horror.
~~~~~
Staying up in the trees long enough to be sure the other trainer and his female pokemon were gone. The thief let out a sigh of relief as he came down from the safety of the branches. "That is why I don't go into crowds and stick to myself." He muttered. The thief couldn't help the fact that he suffered from gynophobia, female humans or female pokemon he just couldn't hide the terror that welled up inside of him even when he was just close to them. Sighing he brushed the leaves and dirt off of him and looked at the unsympathetic insect eyes and the dead eyes of his two companions. "You guys suck. Look I know I stole you ages ago but seriously you have been with me longer then your original trainer. I treat you nicely don't I?" Huffing he crossed his arms over his chest and turned his back to them. "Today is not my day." Today really wasn't his day when the phone in his pocket started to ring a familiar tune. "Great you too. Hello there." He muttered as he picked the phone up and spoke into the reciever.
"Whiskey Tango, I hope you are done being selfish for the moment. I have a job you might be interested in."
Rolling his eyes the thief leaned against one of the many nearby trees his somewhat goofy demenior disappearing to make room for business mode. "I wish you would just call me by my name instead of these stupid nicknames your little group has, I don't even belong to them. Freelance remember?"
"I remember, you never let me forget. I also know that the name you want me to call you is not your real name either." The other voice sounded somewhat exasperated.
The blond just chuckled. "All right all right, so a job huh?"
The Steel Singer
Mawile couldn’t help but whimper as flames cascaded around her. She quickly hopped back, glad to be avoiding them if only for a moment. She definitely couldn’t take many more hits like that! It was times where running wasn’t an option that she really hated her weakness to fire. Unfortunately all her moves were physical so she’d have to risk more singeing if she wanted to stand a chance of taking the strange blue and tan campfire down. As much as she hated to admit it, Sing was pretty useless in the middle of an actual battle.
Then again, she had more than just physical moves. The Deceiver Pokemon grinned as she released a pleasant aroma from her fake jaws. Sweet Scent might help even the odds in her favor and being in a confined space definitely helped to amp up the effectiveness of the move. The opposing Quilava seemed to relax as the smell reached her nostrils, which was the perfect time to break the tranquility with an Astonish attack. Although the Pokemon’s blonde-haired trainer had ordered for a Tackle, Kokoro was apparently too surprised by the attack and flinched, giving Mawile ample time to scurry a few paces back.
Mawile grinned, she could tell from the glare she was receiving that the last round had annoyed Kokoro. Her flames flared up brightly as she followed orders to unleash an Ember down the hallway. The corridor turned out to be a double edged sword, as Mawile was unable to fully dodge the incoming flames. She grimaced as her left side screamed from the pain. Craftiness was her only advantage so she decided to play up the injury. Her eyes grew comically wide as tears welled up and then abruptly burst forth in a five star example of Fake Tears.
Kilik's mind began to race as he stared into the open maw of the Carnivine. It was as if the creature lacked a hinged jaw; he'd never seen a Pokemon with a mouth so wide. Not even Arbok or Seviper came close to this thing's gaping mouth. Bite. Dark-type. Super effective. His brain repeated over and over. In the fraction of a second it took for Carnivine to get up and start moving, Kilik knew he would have to counter-act it. He could foresee the damage it would deal and he grit his teeth. A risky maneuver would need to be taken and chances are, it would only work once.There's not much chance he'd be able to take the first Bite, much less a second. An Exeggcute's defenses weren't its most stellar stat. "Exeggcute, hold steady!" Kilik called out. He dug his foot back slightly.
The Overlord Brain hovered low to the ground, watching as his doom approached him quickly. Hold steady? What was Master thinking? With many of his eggs still grasped by the now-angry Carnivine, he did not have much to defend himself. Right as the foe was about to clamp down on him, Kilik called for a PoisonPowder. As his body became engulfed by teeth, Exeggcute shook himself as poisonous spores shed from his body like dead skin flakes. He sustained a lot of damage and managed to roll himself out of the Carnivine's mouth before hovering very slowly up and then passing out on the gym floor. The struggling little seeds in the vines also ceased their movement. Exeggcute and the Overlord Brain had passed out.
Kilik frowned and then it quickly turned into a smile. That was okay! He knew that it probably wouldn't have worked very well in his favor anyway and probably, he could have gone about it a different way and received a better outcome. Regardless, the boy recalled his fallen Pokemon and readied another ball. "Monferno, I choose you!" he called out, tossing out his newly evolved Fire-type.
The ape hit the ground hard, pounding his chest and making an obscene gesture towards his opponent before laughing heartily. Oh man, this was going to be fun!
"Here, buggy, buggy, buggy," Jasper called out in a somewhat bored voice, having ventured off into the tall grass while not really being sure of what to expect. The last time he'd done this contest, he hadn't exactly tried to play fairly and suddenly he realized that he should have payed closer attention as the rules for the contest were being told. Croconaw plodded alongside her trainer, looking equally as bored as she kicked a rock and sent it flying into a particularly tall patch of grass. "Let's just catch the first thing we see and then sit down and wait until it's over," he told the gator, and she shrugged in quiet agreement and kicked another rock. This one had the fortuitous effect of making the grass shake, and a moment or so later, Jasper and Croconaw were confronted by their first bug type of the competition.
"Oh, well. That's not quite what I was expecting," the youth muttered, scratching his head as he looked down at what had to be the tiniest Caterpie he'd ever seen. It gazed up at the boy and his Pokemon with wide, curious eyes. Jasper had nothing against the Worm Pokemon or its evolutionary line, but given his luck for wacky Pokemon with even wackier personalities, this one was likely to grow up with a penchant for constantly dosing him with Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. "Maybe... the next bug Pokemon we see?" Jasper asked quietly. Croconaw puffed out her chest and stepped forward, unleashing a powerful blast of water that sent the poor little worm arching off into the proverbial sunset. Jasper winced. "That was a bit... much, don't you think?"
All sorts of things were flowing through Hayley's mind as she entered the Pokemon Center and turned over her entire team for treatment. As she waited for their return, she waited in the main lobby, having returned her mother's call to inform her that she would indeed be heading to Goldenrod City to track down Jasper. Her only problem now was just how was she going to get there? Goldenrod City was in Johto, which wasn't exactly the next city over.
Figuring that she had some time before her Pokemon were ready, Hayley headed back outside, finding that it had turned quite dark in the short time she'd been inside and she could smell the rain in the air. Figuring she had maybe twenty minutes or so to beat it she picked up her pace, practically running all the way to the PokeMart where she purchased a Town Map, three Pokeballs, two Potions and two Antidotes, and after some deliberation an umbrella as she decided it was better to be at least somewhat prepared. She used some of her winnings to pay for her purchases, Hayley quickly jammed everything into a bag before darting back outside.
She beat the rain by about ten minutes or so and she quickly claimed her party from the nurse before dragging the lot of them to the cafeteria for a post-battle supper. She also took the time to study the map, quickly discovering that the best way to to get directly to Goldenrod would be by train from either Celadon City or Saffron City: the tricky part would be getting to one of those cities. Even though she'd get there in an instant if she could, the lead wasn't exactly going anywhere right now so she might as well head north through Mount Moon and attempt to take on the gym in Cerulean City - it was on the way, after all.
Earth Power... didn't do a thing? Keegan thought, frowning slightly as Norman gave his Slaking its first command. Attract? Wait, that doesn't mean... oh holy s**t, it does. As the monstrous (and apparently female) Pokemon got to her feet and began to dance around, the look that appeared on Keegan's face as he witnessed the display could only be described as a mixture of nausea and horror. As much as he wanted to tear his gaze away from the Slaking he couldn't; at least until a loud crash and a familiar voice snapped him out of his sickened state and he sneered over at Dante, who'd apparently decided to climb through the window before introducing his face to the floor. "Oh, like this is my fault," he shot back, having nearly forgotten that he was supposed to be in the middle of a gym battle. "Nobody said you had to come along, you know!"
Boris' loud bellowing called his attention back to the battle, however, and it seemed that the Camerupt could not resist the Slaking's "womanly charms". He was stomping his feet and snorting out large clouds of smoke to show his appreciation and Keegan buried his face in his palm. Of course the battle couldn't play out smoothly and without any bumps or hiccups, and now Boris was infatuated with Norman's Slaking. Keegan growled and clenched a fist, at least able to find some solace in the fact that he still had one Pokemon left to battle with should the Camerupt fall. "Boris, Flamethrower!" he shouted, thrusting a hand toward the large Normal-type. Naturally, Boris was too busy making goo-goo eyes at Ms Slaking to even hear his trainer. Keegan sighed and shook his head. Why couldn't anything ever be easy for him?
Miharu wasn't sure what to expect of the new trainers as they walked in, though the very first thing she noticed was that they weren't quite as young as she thought they'd be - in fact, they were pretty much her age. That's quite the coincidence, the green-haired girl thought, carefully looking them over. There were only two of them; a boy and a girl, and it was safe to say that the girl looked quite confident while the boy seemed a bit more apprehensive. She had long, jet-black hair pulled back in a French braid and she wore a blue, pleated skirt with a simple white blouse. The boy had white-blonde hair and wore a pair of khaki-coloured cargo pants with a deep green hooded sweater. Miharu could tell that the two knew each other, as every now and then the girl would whisper something back to the boy and he'd nod in agreement.
"Good morning, trainers!" Juniper said loudly, giving Miharu the distinct impression that she was being addressed as well. "I know you've been waiting a long time for this day, and it's finally come! Let's see..." she trailed off as she glanced down at the clipboard in her hand. "Ah yes. Taryn and Bradley! Welcome to the world of Pokemon!"
The girl, Taryn, had quickly caught sight of Miharu and locked eyes with the green-haired girl. "Yes, that's us," she said haughtily, now motioning to Miharu. "And just who is this?"
Juniper continued right on smiling, undaunted by the girl's cold tone. "This is Miharu Winters, from the Johto region. She has been assisting me this morning with preparations."
"Alright, whatever. Can we get our Pokemon now?" Taryn asked, folding her arms across her chest. At her side, Bradley smiled apologetically; it seemed he was used to Taryn's bratty behavior.
Damien wasn't at all surprised to hear Karrigan decide on Striaton City as their next destination - the first gym was there, after all - and he checked the time on his watch. It was getting rather late and chances were very good that they wouldn't make it before nightfall. It wasn't that he was scared or nervous or anything like that; it was more that over time he'd learned that most spirits seemed to prefer to come out at night, and camping out in the middle of nowhere felt like a cheesy ghost story waiting to happen and he wasn't quite comfortable enough with Karrigan to expose her to that sort of thing just yet.
Karrigan's sudden challenge, however, was well, sudden, and he raised an eyebrow at the redhead, his gaze drifting upward as he studied the newly-evolved Steelix. He knew what she meant by 'restricted' and he smirked. "A battle, hmm? All right, why not?" As much as he'd like to test out his new Milotic, he knew she still wasn't all that strong, so instead he chose to go with the one ghost that didn't annoy the hell out of him: Gastly.
The Pokemon appeared in a flash, looking a bit sleepy (at least to Damien). Gastly's gaze drifted upward as he eyed the Steelix, an he gave a low whistle. "Damn, someone's been taking their vitamins," the Ghost-type said. "What exactly is going on here?"
"It's a battle, Gastly. I'd appreciate it if you'd stop yapping and get ready."
Gastly looked across the field, past the Steelix to Karrigan. "I'm beginning to think you like this girl a lot more than you let on," the ghost chortled, but like usual, Damien ignored him, and instead gave Karrigan the go-ahead to make the first move.
The Dragonair was very strong, there was no question about that, as there wasn't much of anything that Erika could do to prevent Victreebel from being hit by all of those flames. The Flycatcher Pokemon shrieked in pain, and though his body felt like it was burning, he knew it wasn't like the true burn of a real Fire-type attack (thankfully!). One thing Erika had learned from her previous encounters with this particular Dragon-type was it's special ability, but she knew just how to deal with that. "Victreebel, darling, it's time to use Gastro Acid," she called out, a hint of playfulness in her voice. Victreebel gave another loud scream, but it quickly changed to a gross-sounding gurgle before the Flycatcher Pokemon quite literally vomited up its stomach acids all over the Dragonair. While really quite disgusting, the attack wouldn't cause Faustus any damage but it would suppress his Shed Skin ability. Erika smiled; she wasn't beaten just yet!
For a moment, Mai had closed her eyes as she thought back to one of her own first missions, which had taken place years ago. Giovanni had told her that she must prove her worth by defeating the Gym Leader of Pewter City, though at that time it had been a man by the name of Flint, father of the current gym leader, Brock. She smirked as she recalled how easy that match had been, as her first Pokemon had been a Squirtle, given to her by none other than Professor Oak of Pallet Town. Earning the professor's trust and getting him to give her a starter Pokemon had in fact been her first true mission. Mai looked down at Katie as she'd come back into the center room, looking a bit surprised. "Yes, it is a real mission," she told the girl, nodding. "In fact, winning gym badges is a rather common mission given out by all Admins. Gym battles are a test of a trainer's mettle, and if you're not good enough to win a badge, then you're not good enough to be a member of this organization. It's as simple as that." She paused as the girl gave her a rather serious look, and she smirked. "Normally, I would say no, but in your case, I suppose I can make an exception. I'll be there for your match against the leader, you have my word. However, my sources tell me that Maylene is rather skilled in the handling of Fighting-type Pokemon, so it may not be so wise to bring your cute little bunny along for that match. Now get moving, Katie. I hate to be kept waiting."
"Huh, how about that," Georgia mumbled to herself, running a hand through her auburn hair. She hadn't really been expecting for the Exeggcute to fall after one Bite attack, but then again stranger things had happened! "Good job, Carnivine!" she told the Bug Catcher Pokemon as it drifted back to her side, its face flushed. The Poisonpowder had taken full effect, but the Grass-type wasn't finished yet! Georgia and her partner Pokemon looked on as Kilik sent out his second Pokemon, and one that had been seen quite often in this gym thanks to Professor Rowan and the three starter Pokemon he gave out to new trainers. The Monferno was energetic, that much was certain, but it also seemed a bit young; perhaps it had only evolved recently? "Carnivine, use Vine Whip!" the auburn-haired trainer called out excitedly. The poisoned Grass-type gave a cry, its long tendrils whipping out to try and trip up the Monferno.
Karrigan was actually a little surprised when Damien accepted her battle challenge so easily, but she said nothing and instead watched as he sent out his Gastly. That wasn't surprising, as he hadn't done any training with his newly-hatched/evolved Feebas/Milotic and after she'd sent a Water Gun at his head, she wasn't so sure the Water-type even wanted to battle. She couldn't help but smile a bit as the two conversed, though all she heard was the Ghost-type's Pokemon speak and she couldn't help but wonder what he was saying as Damien motioned for her and Aegeus to take the first move.
Now Karrigan had become aware of a new move in the Steelix's repertoire and she decided that it was the perfect attack to lead off with. "Aegeus, give your Dragonbreath a try," she said, nodding. Aegeus didn't have the highest special attack in the world so it probably wouldn't be all that effective, but at the very least, Karrigan wanted to get a feel for all of his moves regardless. The Steelix's ironclad body creaked loudly as he rose up, looking down at Gastly with what almost looked like a grin. The Steelix then opened his mouth, releasing a blast of indigo-coloured energy at the Ghost-type.
The Fiery Fibber
Mag rolled over in his bed. Unsurprisingly, his compatriots were nowhere to be found. Rajasi hadn’t been the quietest when he shuffled through Mag’s bag, looking for the device to copy over the data from the Memory Institute’s mainframe. It didn’t really matter that much to Mag who got the data as it wasn’t going to be useful to Team Rocket anyway. Moti had counted on Rajasi being snoopy, but he was a little surprised to find that Claire wasn’t in bed. She was probably out for a moonlit stroll. Moti rolled over, at least he was going to get his beauty sleep.
The Angsty Rocket
Rajasi continued unaware of the heated fight commencing behind him. Luckily for Claire, he had found another flight of stairs and made it to the ground floor before the battle began so there was a lot of building blocking the noise (and lights) of her battle with the rouge Mawile. As it turned out, Doctor Luria was the only scientist still in the east wing but he had apparently fallen asleep at the console and was out for the count.
Rajasi grinned as the plugged the device into a USB port on the computer. He wouldn’t even need to break into the system since it was still logged in. He scanned the screen for any relevant information, but the document that was open was just an email application. ’Wait a minute,’ the brown haired man thought as he read more closely. “The three have arrived as you had forewarned. Our recent discovery has put the plan to avert the afforementioned data confiscation on hold, but security has still been tightened. On behalf of our entire staff, we thank you for your help in this matter, M.L.”
“M.L. or Moti Lotus. Well, well, well. Looks like I’ve finally got the dirt I need to kick you out.” Rajasi couldn’t help but smile at his luck. He quickly snapped a photo of the screen on his phone before forwarding the email to the division boss. Evidence of a traitor should get him a nice promotion. The computer beeped, signaling that the copy was complete. Rajasi pulled out the USB stick and tucked it into his pocket as he turned and left the room with a spring in his step.
Well that was all kinds of awkward, Juliet thought as she wandered around the Pokémon Center. She was starting to get hungry, and she knew the Center had some sort of cafeteria nearby. As much as she wanted to sit around and wait for more updates on Lottie, she figured that by now her Riolu was sleeping and that it would be a good idea for her to wind down for the day too. Eventually she happened upon the cafeteria and got herself a light supper, but she found that she wasn't as hungry as she initially thought she was. She picked at her food for quite some time before giving up, and after dumping her trash and turning in her dishes; she headed back to the lobby. Perhaps the nurse would have some news for her.
Upon rounding the corner, however, Juliet came to an abrupt halt. Two familiar boys were standing at the front desk, conversing with the nurse that had taken over for the night shift and she knew who they were immediately. "Corey and Cody," she mumbled, backing up so that they wouldn't see her. They move fast, Juliet thought, looking around anxiously for an escape route, but of course there was none. She also couldn't just up and leave with Lottie still in the nurse's care, and she'd known from the moment she'd ditched the twins on Skyarrow Bridge that she'd have to own up to her actions eventually. Deciding to bite the bullet, Juliet sighed and fixed her ponytail before stepping out from her hiding place, getting more than halfway to the front desk before the nurse saw her and motioned to the two boys.
They spun around in near-perfect unison, their expressions identical as they raised their arms and pointed accusingly at their little sister. "Do you have any idea how much trouble you're in, young lady?!" Cody shouted, perhaps a little too earnestly.
"Yeah! We've been looking everywhere for you!" Corey added. Some of the people in the Pokémon Center were now looking at them, and even the nurse had gone back into one of the rooms to give the siblings their space.
"Obviously you didn't look everywhere," Juliet said coolly, leaning against the counter. "You two sure are slow, though."
The twins exchanged embarrassed looks before glaring back at their sister. "Yeah, well, you're just lucky that we didn't call Mom," Corey said threateningly. "We were supposed to be watching out for you."
"I can watch out for myself," Juliet replied curtly, now folding her arms in a defiant manner. "I'm here, alive and well, aren't I?"
"Sure," scoffed Cody, motioning toward the door the nurse had gone through. "You're fine, but what about Charlotte? The nurse told us that you let her get clobbered by, what was it now, Corey?"
"A Panpour," Corey said, his eyes narrowed at Juliet.
"I didn't let that happen," Juliet retorted, hoping that the nurse had left out the part about the Panpour's trainer being only seven years old. "It just… did! Things happen and the important thing is that Lottie is going to be all right. I told you before that I don't need a babysitter. I'm sixteen years old, and I can look after myself. So just go away, and leave me alone."
The brothers exchanged looks again, this time looking a bit hurt and Corey sighed. "We're not trying to babysit you, Jules. It's just that we know how tough it can be when you first start your journey and we want to make sure that you're not going to get yourself into trouble."
"Or do something stupid," Cody added.
"We're your big brothers, it's our job to look out for you, whether you like it or not."
Juliet wasn't sure if the nurse had chosen this moment to come back out on purpose or not, but she was thankful regardless when she motioned to the blonde girl. "Your Riolu is awake and alert. Would you like to see her?"
"Yeah, I would," Juliet answered, trying to pretend like she hadn't been listening to what the twins were saying. Logically, she knew everything they were saying was true and that they really did want what's best for her, but she also felt an almost overwhelming drive to prove to them that she was a big girl now and could take care of herself. The nurse had started to head back, but Juliet stopped, looking both her brothers in the eye. "Look guys, I know you're worried about me, and it's not that I don't appreciate it, because I honestly do. It's just that this is something that I – no, Lottie and I – have to do for ourselves. I don't expect you to understand it, but at the very least, I hope you can respect that."
For the first time since the two new trainers had walked in, Juniper's smile faltered for the briefest of seconds. Miharu thought she may be imagining it, but it almost seemed like the professor wasn't overly happy with how easily Taryn had dismissed her. The thought made the green-haired girl smile.
"Yes, yes," Juniper continued, having regained her composure before either of the other two children had noticed she'd lost it. "The big moment has arrived: it's time for you to meet your future Pokemon!" Even Miharu had to admit that she felt a rush of excitement as the professor pointed out the three perfectly polished PokeBalls resting in their slots, and she glanced back at the new trainers, wondering which one they would choose as Juniper picked up the first PokeBall.
"First, meet Snivy, the Grass-type!" The Grass Snake Pokemon once again made an appearance, immediately taking its place in line and striking a rather confident pose. "Next, it's Tepig!" The adorable little Fire Pig snorted out a small puff of smoke before darting over to take its place beside Snivy. "And last, but certainly not least, Oshawott!" The little otter, still quite full from his extra-large breakfast grinned up at the humans cheekily before he slowly waddled over to stand next to Tepig, where he yawned loudly. "Well, there you are! Now you have the fun job of choosing just one of them. Miharu, that means you, too, understood?"
Miharu had taken this as her cue to give the other two trainers some space, though when she heard Juniper speak her name, she froze up. Wait, what? Did Professor Juniper just tell her to choose one of the three starter Pokemon? She looked up at the older woman, eyes wide with surprise and Juniper nodded, gesturing to the three Pokemon with a gentle wave of her hand.
=====
Damien considered himself rather lucky that his emotions were always in check, otherwise he might have felt a little intimidated as the massive Steelix rose up. Gastly, on the other hand, looked a little more apprehensive, drifting back and looking on with almost comically-wide eyes as the Steel/Ground-type unleashed a stream of energy at him. 'Uh, Damien? You are planning to actively participate in this battle, right? Right? DAMIEN!!' The Ghost-type let out a pained shriek as he was engulfed by the Dragonbreath, though it was far from the worst attack he'd ever suffered through.
Damien scoffed lightly. "I wasn't aware that you needed to be told to get out of the way of an energy blast, but I suppose I was wrong," he said, ignoring the venomous glare he was receiving from his Pokemon. "But now would be a good time to counterattack - use Will-o-Wisp." He wasn't sure, but he thought he heard the Gastly mutter 'jerk' before a ring of dancing blue flames appeared around the floating Pokemon, and he willed them toward the much-larger creature before him.
