Since NHL season started today (Kings defeated Ducks 4-1 in London), Here's a gallery that deals with there uniform designs from past n' present day In beginnin', players wore humble wool sweaters. As NHL's 91st season dawns, all 30 teams are clad in new streamlined uniforms made of 4 lighter ventilated fabrics that keep players cooler n' drier while enhancin' their speed n' freedom of motion. Some have updated color schemes n' new crests, although Chicago Blackhawks will remain true to their familiar look.

Original Six years (1942-67) saw evolution of sweaters with a drawstrin' neck, most famous bein' those of storied Montreal Canadiens. In early '60s, wool was mercifully replaced by more comfortable synthetic fabrics, which still absorbed sweat n' melted ice. Goaltenders will surely appreciate feeling less soggy this season.

Best known for their black n' gold scheme of Mario Lemieux years, Penguins wore blue for their 1st 12 seasons after NHL expanded in 1967-68. Their new uniform bears their 21st century black n' white with original skatin' penguin crest that was dropped during much of `90s.

1st expansion era of '60s n' '70s brought unusual sights, such as California/Oakland Golden Seals n' Los Angeles Kings, who wore all-yellow home jerseys instead of traditional base white. Early '70s also saw introduction of players' names onto backs of sweaters.

Canucks wore most unforgettable sweater of late '70s n' early '80s. Their new uniform reflects their original colors n' logo (on shoulders) with crest they adopted in 1997. Other teams, such as Dallas Stars n' Nashville Predators, also have their city name spelled out across chest this season.

1 of NHL's bolder, n' weirder, experiments began in 1981. Only Hartford Whalers n' Philadelphia Flyers wore pants, which were gone after 2 seasons because players found them too slick, makin' them prone to skiddin' long n' hard into boards.

By mid-'90s expanding NHL was movin' south, n' with that change went fondly-remembered teams such as former WHA members Quebec Nordiques (yes, that's young Peter Forsberg) n' Winnipeg Jets, who moved to Colorado ('95) n' Arizona ('96), respectively.

Like 1st expansion era, 2nd had its share of fashion crimes, among them Phoenix Coyotes, whose look is greatly simplified now.

Perhaps most unfortunate uniform redesign belonged to 1995-96 New York Islanders. Their crest reminded many--especially Rangers fans--of icon for a popular brand of fish sticks. Isles eventually returned to their traditional design, which is reflected in their new edition.

Original Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were bedecked in eggplant purple on road, n' their crest was little more than a billboard for owner Disney's movie franchise. Their latest, more dignified name n' duds are befittin' of a Stanley Cup champion.

After lockout-shortened season of 1994-95, many teams unveiled a 3rd jersey with variations on their traditional colors n' crest. Boston Bruins donned a bear head that many deemed a boo-boo. New York Rangers' adopted Lady Liberty.

3rd jerseys with alternate colors n' crests survived into 21st century, among them Edmonton Oilers' black oil drop n' Calgary Flames' fiery steed.

Buffalo Sabres have been on cuttin' edge of fashion. Their late '90s look foreshadowed much of this season's NHL-wide wave. Buffalo's current scheme, introduced last season, bears a number on the right breast (numbers were worn on players' chests as long ago as 1940s) n' a crest that has been assailed for resemblin' a slug--hardly symbolic of a team feared for its speed.

Along with their familiar colors, Columbus Blue Jackets have a new crest. Ottawa Senators' centurion is sharper n' more menacin'.

What's old is new again. After 11 years of blue, black, white n' copper schemes n' eagle n' capitol buildin' crests, Washington Capitals have returned to their look of 1974-95.
